Download or read book Consanguineous Marriages Their Effect Upon Offspring Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Withington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consanguineous Marriages: Their Effect Upon Offspring Now this statement is very explicit, to the effect that be sides the ordinary laws of inheritance which may affect offspring for good or for bad, there is in marriages of rela tions a specific degenerative influence, due to the mere fact of non-renewal of the blood. If this be true, it follows that the operation of this influence Will be equally potent and baneful when the persons united are healthy as when they are diseased. And there should be discoverable among the offspring of such unions a conspicuous deterioration, out of all proportion to those other hereditary influences whose potency is so well established. Indeed it is difficult to see why, if this supposition be true, we should not find some evidence of degeneration present as the rule in all the per sons born from marriages of relations, inasmuch as in all these cases by the hypothesis this specific cause of degenera tion is present. Whether this is the fact, has been made the subject of inquiry by many investigators, but with results so utterly diverse as to leave the student more bewildered than ever, and to suggest that in no field of investigation has the statistical method more pronounced limitations than in this. In a paper like the present we can only allude in the brief est manner to some of the most important collection of cases illustrating the opposite views on this question. Download or read book The Impact of the Family written by John Witte and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family is humanity's oldest and most basic social institution, but today it is fragile, fractured, and fraught in many liberal lands. This volume gathers scholars from sociology, psychology, history, religion, ethics, law, and medicine from five continents to analyze the complex nature and place of the family in character formation and human flourishing. The chapters study the impact of catechesis, schooling, work, and discipline on the development of individual moral agency and responsibility. They document the critical roles of family love, trust, fidelity, and story-telling in shaping the moral character of all family members from infancy to old age. They describe effective strategies of resistance and resilience for family members who face abuse, divorce, death, chauvinism, racism, and homophobia. And several chapters challenge modern arguments and policies that aim to flatten if not abolish the marital family, even while they call for family law reforms. Contributions by Enola G. Download or read book Advances in the Study of Genetic Disorders written by Kenji Ikehara and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies on genetic disorders have been rapidly advancing in recent years as to be able to understand the reasons why genetic disorders are caused. The first Section of this volume provides readers with background and several methodologies for understanding genetic disorders. Genetic defects, diagnoses and treatments of the respective unifactorial and multifactorial genetic disorders are reviewed in the second and third Sections. Certainly, it is quite difficult or almost impossible to cure a genetic disorder fundamentally at the present time. However, our knowledge of genetic functions has rapidly accumulated since the double-stranded structure of DNA was discovered by Watson and Crick in 1956. Therefore, nowadays it is possible to understand the reasons why genetic disorders are caused. It is probable that the knowledge of genetic disorders described in this book will lead to the discovery of an epoch of new medical treatment and relieve human beings from the genetic disorders of the future.

Cloth. $150.* Published three years before the Seneca Falls Convention, this lay guide for women is probably the first ever published in the United States. It is infused with the spirit of early feminism. As Mansfield [1801-1880] states in the preface: "Rights, and the knowledge of rights are no longer hidden from the masses of men; and why should they be from women?" (6). The book has four parts. The first is a general history of woman's legal status from biblical times to the 1840s. The second is an account of the American woman's civil rights. The third reviews the laws of property common to both genders. The final section reviews the rights, liabilities and duties of women in domestic relations. Mansfield was a Connecticut lawyer who later moved to Cincinnati, where he became professor of constitutional law and history at Cincinnati College.
