Book Classroom 15

Download or read book Classroom 15 written by Peter Laufer and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A result of an investigative report by tenacious University of Oregon journalism students, Classroom 15 tells the story of how the dreams of fourth-grade students at the Riverside School, Roseburg, in rural Oregon timber country, were crushed by the prevailing Red Scare, McCarthyism, state and societal censorship, and J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI. The teacher of Classroom 15, known fondly as Mr. McFetridge, assigned a pen pal project in an effort to take geography lessons outside of the classroom. Imagining a place as far from Oregon as they possibly could, the students wrote letters to nine- and ten-year-old counterparts in the Soviet Union. Janice Boyle, the class secretary, reached out to Oregon’s Congressional representative, Charles O. Porter, seeking assistance connecting with peers in Russia. Representative Porter forwarded the letter to the Secretary of State Christian Herter, and a week later the students received the shocking and disheartening news that their benign request had been needlessly denied. In the wake of McCarthyism, the Eisenhower administration subverted the assignment, fearing Communist propaganda would infect the innocent minds of eager Oregon schoolchildren. The students’ plight quickly gained national attention with stories running from the Roseburg News-Review to the New York Times. The publicity didn’t miss the attention of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI. His agents investigated. They traveled to Roseburg, collected evidence, and took it back to the Bureau’s regional headquarters in Portland. The public reaction was swift and unrelenting. The teacher and the Congressman were attacked by outraged Roseburg citizens, the school board, and enraged Americans across the country. Classroom 15 is all the above and a page-turning adventure story told with the voices of the empowered, tenacious University of Oregon journalism students who took the nascent story and demonstrated their unwavering devotion to the journalistic process by telling the tale.

Book Undergraduate Research in English Studies

Download or read book Undergraduate Research in English Studies written by Laurie Grobman and published by National Council of Teachers of English (Ncte). This book was released on 2010 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editors Laurie Grobman and Joyce Kinkead offer a groundbreaking collection of essays that aims to mobilize the profession of English studies to further participate in undergraduate research, which in the past had been reserved for scientific fields. Why shouldn't undergraduates in English studies have the same opportunities as those in the sciences to benefit from undertaking real research that can inform and have an impact on practitioners in the discipline? They should and can, according to editors Laurie Grobman and Joyce Kinkead, who have produced this collection to showcase the first steps being made to integrate undergraduate research into English studies and, even more important, to point the way toward greater involvement. Undergraduate Research in English Studies is a groundbreaking collection that aims to mobilize the profession of English studies to further participate in undergraduate research, an educational movement and comprehensive curricular innovation that is "the pedagogy for the twenty-first century," according to the Joint Statement of Principles composed by the Council on Undergraduate Research and the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research. Students engaged in genuine research gain an insider's understanding of field-specific debates, develop relevant skills and insights for future careers and graduate study, and contribute their voices to creating knowledge through the research process. Some contributors discuss the importance of mentoring, how to conduct research responsibly, and avenues for disseminating research and scholarship locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally. Others provide case studies of undergraduate research in literature and in composition and rhetoric. The volume combines theory and practice, and lays the groundwork for further practice and inquiry, sending forth a call to broaden undergraduate research possibilities in all areas of English.

Book A Handbook for Honors Programs at Two year Colleges

Download or read book A Handbook for Honors Programs at Two year Colleges written by Theresa Ann James and published by National Collegiate Honors. This book was released on 2006 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an idea book for two-year institutions thinking of adding an honors program to their list of academic offerings, and as such aspires to provide a useful description of the many options available to honors education for the several audiences who, as a matter of course, may become stakeholders in the operation of a two-year college honors program. Beyond their need for initial suggestions about starting a successful honors program at their home institutions, readers may consider the author's full and various descriptions as an invitation to lift their eyes toward the horizon, to envision a full program that will truly serve the needs of the institution. This work also acquaints the audience with a selection of key examples that will aid an embryonic program in the sometimes onerous birthing process. The handbook includes several appendices that list some useful research about honors, including a sample honors retreat and model honors contracts. The following are appended: (1) Basic Characteristics of a Fully Developed Honors Program; (2) Basic Characteristics of a Fully Developed Honors College; (3) NCHC Publications, Monographs, and Resources; (4) Sample Honors Retreat by Eddie Weller, San Jacinto College, South Campus; (5) Sample Contracts (excerpted from "A 'Sampler' of Honors Contracts," edited by Roy Colquitt for the Two-Year College Committee, 1999); and (6) Bibliography.
