Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on English Cotton Mills and Methods Having spent the last part of my recent stay in England. In Yorkshire and Lancashire, inspecting mills and machine shops, I observed many differences between English and Ameri can practice, a statement of which may be of some use. I venture to express no opinions upon these differences, because it is some years since I was directly engaged in manufacturing, and also because my observations were of necessity somewhat superficial. You will take them for just what they are worth. The first cotton mill visited was the mill of Messrs. Bowman Bros., at Halifax. These gentlemen own about spindles, which are operated on medium and fine yarns, spun from Orleans, Memphis and Egyptian cotton. A picture of their mill is submitted herewith. Dr. F. H. Bowman, of this firm, is the author of the well-known book upon the cotton fiber, and has lately published a most valuable text book upon the physical sciences for the use of intermediate schools and colleges. His scientific attainments, coupled with the practical skill of his brother. Which he also shares, may render his practice worth the attention of all spinners. With his consent I submit the fol lowing observations which were made in his new mill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Cotton Mill Practice and Equipment, 1919: With Classified Buyer's Index When the American cotton trade entered on the business of 1918, therefore, it had to reckon with price-enhancing influences Of the most powerful character, yet with ever - present uncertainty as to the scope and duration of these influences - seeing that the end of the war must sometime be reached - and with all the perplexities arising from the extraordinarily uneven distribution Of the supply of cotton in the world's markets, due to the effects of the war upon the supply of ocean tonnage for commercial uses, upon the movement Of the international exchanges and upon the financial situation Of the several belligerent countries. This unevenness of the distribution of the supply of cotton, moreover, was of special importance to the cotton trade in the United States, because the very fact that this is the greatest cotton-producing country in the world brought it about that the under - supply in foreign countries had as its correlative a continuous over - supply here. It may be said. Then, that the American trade, from the very beginning Of 1918, has been subjected to very strong opposite demand and supply and price-determining forces, whose clash has produced violent upward and downward movements of the markets and has made irregularity and incalculability the rule rather than the exception in the transac tion of the business. As an illustration Of this statement it may be mentioned that there have occurred more than once during the year price fluctuations more extensive (in cents per pound) than the entire average price for cotton in the United States during the decade preced ing the war. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Cotton Mill Practice and Equipment, 1921: With Classified Buyer's Index In the eyes Of the outside Observer, of course, the essential feature of this contrast consists Of the tremendous change in the general price level for raw cotton of American and other growths which occurred between the Spring and the Fall of the year, - a price change the like of which can be found in connection with cotton only during and after the period of acute cotton famine produced by the American Civil War, and of a kind which had always been assumed by the present generation of cotton merchants to be entirely beyond the bounds of possibility under latter-day conditions of world-wide production and distribution of cotton. From the point of view of those actually engaged in the cotton business, however, the decline of nearly 70 per cent. In the general price of the commodity which came about from July to December, 1920, though naturally it gave rise to some problems of a more or less difficult character, was much less a cause of anxiety and loss than were the quite unprecedented alterations of the relative values of the vari ous qualities and grades of cotton which occurred simultaneously with the general downward movement Of the price. Book Cotton Mill Handbook

Download or read book Cotton Mill Handbook written by Textile World and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Mill Handbook: For Superintendents and Overseers in Cotton Yarn and Cloth Mills The sizes of yarns are designated by the terms count, cut, run, hank, skein, dram, grain, etc., all of which are based upon two elementary principles; i.e., weight and length. Each term represents a certain length of yarn for a fixed' weight, or vice versa; but unfortunately there are difierent standards of weights and measures, which result in a great deal of confusion, although this is less in the cotton industry than in others. The largest variety of terms is found in the woolen industry. In the United States we have woolen cut, run, grain, etc., when all may be reduced to a common basis. There is no doubt that the adoption of an international standard would benefit the textile industry, but which standard to adopt is a question on which manufacturers disagree. It is necessary to familiarize oneself With the standard numbers of the various yarns; also, as in the case of woolen yarns, where different standard numbers are used for the various terms, it is well to be familiar with the standard number of each term, as by this means a great deal of confusion will be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Situation, Vol. 21: July 26, 1938 It has been estimated (by the New York Cotton Exchange Service) that cotton mills outside the United States consumed a total of bales of foreign cotton during the first 10 months of the 1937-38 season. On the basis of this estimate and reports pertaining to mill activity in June and early July, it now seems likely that for the entire season, consumption of foreign cotton in countries other than the United States Will probably total in the neighborhood of bales. This would compare with a total 0 bales in 1936-37, in 1935-36 and an average of bales for the 5 years ended 1936-37. Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1987, Like a Family has become a classic in the study of American labor history. Basing their research on a series of extraordinary interviews, letters, and articles from the trade press, the authors uncover the voices and experiences of workers in the Southern cotton mill industry during the 1920s and 1930s. Now with a new afterword, this edition stands as an invaluable contribution to American social history. "The genius of Like a Family lies in its effortless integration of the history of the family--particularly women--into the history of the cotton-mill world.--Ira Berlin, New York Times Book Review "Like a Family is history, folklore, and storytelling all rolled into one. It is a living, revelatory chronicle of life rarely observed by the academe. A powerhouse.--Studs Terkel "Here is labor history in intensely human terms. Neither great impersonal forces nor deadening statistics are allowed to get in the way of people. If students of the New South want both the dimensions and the feel of life and labor in the textile industry, this book will be immensely satisfying.--Choice
