Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Cotton Production in the United States, Vol. 1: Also Embracing Agricultural and Physico-Geographical Descriptions of the Several Cotton States and of California; Mississippi Valley and Southwestern States In submitting to the public the series of reports on cotton production the editor deems it not unnecessary to explain briefly the causes leading to their present form, and particularly to the great predominance of the special descriptive over the general part. AS originally outlined by ex-superintendent Walker, the report was to embrace, besides the merely statistical matter, a measurably complete discussion of cotton production, not only in the United States, but elsewhere, and in the past as well as in the present, the results themselves being used to indicate the probable movement in the immediate future. In a word, the figures of the returns should be set into a philosophical discussion of the subject matter to which they relate. In regard to the cotton of the South, the field of actual culture should be defined, and within that field the soils treated of, as far as possible, mapped, the methods of culture discussed, the labor system described, and the American cotton botanically considered and compared as to its adaptations to the uses of the manufacturer with the cotton of other countries. So far as might be, it would be agreeable to the general plan that the discussion should outrun the field of actual present cultivation and take up the question as to the regions of the United States to which the culture might profitably be extended. Historical matter might be introduced to the extent that Should appear desirable. Previous official reports and the literature of the subject could be brought under contribution, though the work should in the main consist of fresh, original matter. Spreading from these places of origin and later merging, the east and west branches of the upland short-staple cotton industry developed along similar lines until the Civil War.John Hebron Moore's The Emergence of the Cotton Kingdom in the Old Southwest: Mississippi, 1770--1860 traces the evolution of cotton culture in the region bordering the Mississippi River. Moore examines the society supported by that industry, emphasizing technological changes that transformed cotton plantations into agricultural equivalents of factories and slaves into Mule-drawn equipment led to the introduction of improved methods of managing plantation slaves, and that in turn altered the nature of plantation slavery significantly.Moore focuses on Mississippi as both the pioneer cotton state of the Old Southwest and the Old South's leading producer of cotton between 1835 and 1860. Progressive planters made major contributions ot the success of the antebellum upland cotton industry, including the breeding of superior varieties of cotton, the introduction of improved farm implements and machinery, the development of effective methods of combating soil erosion, and systems for managing slaves based upon incentives rather than coercion. In addition, unlike other studies of antebellum southern agriculture, this book examines the contributions to the success of cotton industry made by steamboats and railroads, manufacturing establishments, and the urban population.

Book excerpt: An examination of the settlement history of the alluvial bottomlands of the lower Mississippi Valley from 1880 to 1930, this study details how cotton-growers transformed the swamplands of northwestern Mississippi, northeastern Louisiana, northeastern Arkansas, and southern Missouri into cotton fields. Although these alluvial bottomlands contained the richest cotton soils in the American South, cotton-growers in the Southern bottomlands faced a host of environmental problems, including dense forests, seasonal floods, water-logged soils, poor transportation, malarial fevers and insect pests. This interdisciplinary approach uses primary and secondary sources from the fields of history, geography, sociology, agronomy, and ecology to fill an important gap in our knowledge of American environmental history. Requiring laborers to clear and cultivate their lands, cotton-growers recruited black and white workers from the upland areas of the Southern states. Growers also supported the levee districts which built imposing embankments to hold the floodwaters in check. Canals and drainage ditches were constructed to drain the lands, and local railways and graveled railways soon ended the area's isolation. Finally, quinine and patent medicines would offer some relief from the malarial fevers that afflicted bottomland residents, and commercial poisons would combat the local pests that attacked the cotton plants, including the boll weevils which arrived in the early twentieth century.
