Book Landmark Papers in Anaesthesia

Download or read book Landmark Papers in Anaesthesia written by Nigel R. Webster and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence-based medicine is a concept that is at the forefront of anaesthesia. Clinicians are increasingly encouraged to practise patient management based on available evidence in the scientific literature. For example, new anaesthesia methods, e.g. regional anaesthesia, are being used more frequently based on case studies that show the efficacy and cost-savings associated with the treatment. Additionally, considering that many anaesthetists are required to cover a range of areas, information discussing proven methods as well as pitfalls to avoid are valuable to all those working in the field. This book provides a detailed summary of the most important trials and studies in anaesthesia, ranging from neuroanaesthesia and anaesthesia for transplant, to paediatric and thoracic anaesthesia, allowing the reader to rapidly extract key results. Each chapter is written by a prominent anaesthetist in that particular field, and papers have been selected on a number of criteria, included impact factor, authors' choices, or even because the conclusions reached do not indicate best practice. With this wealth of information collected into this newest volume in the 'Landmark Papers in' series, Landmark Papers in Anaesthesia is essential reading for all practicing anaesthetists.

Even though his dates are not quite modem (1813-1858), his accomplishments were, especially his book On Chloroform and Other Anaesthetics (1858), the first comprehensive textbook on anaesthesia [2]. There has been a real renaissance of interest in the history of anaesthesia. Among those responsible for this rebirth, besides Dr. Rupreht and Dr. Erdmann, are Dr. Selma Calmes and Dr. Rod Calverley, now on the Board of the new American society, the Anesthesia History Association. It held its inaugural meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, during the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, on 9 October 1983. The meeting was well attended, and the evening was profitable and delightful. Mention should also be made of the accomplishments of the nurse anaesthetists [3]. They are many in number, and generally they work under the direction of a physician anaesthesiologist. Although modem anaesthesia was Ameriea's first great medieal diseovery, it soon traversed the globe and found worldwide acceptance. The British, for example, have made many coeval and historie contributions. Besides Dr. Duncum one thinks of Prof. T. Cecil Gray, who pioneered the British use ofeurare [4], andDr. J. Alfred Lee, whowas a pioneerin the use ofspin~l anaesthesia and is currently working on the fifth edition of a textbook on spinal analgesia [7]. Dr.

Download or read book Safer Childbirth written by Marjorie Tew and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all industrialized countries, the last fifty years have seen both a momentaus improvement in the safety of childbirth and the completion of a momentaus revolution in maternity care, with the philosophy and methods of the obstetric profession triumphant. This book tells the story of how these changes came about. lt is a story urgently in need of telling, for the subject is one about which there is almost universal misunderstanding. Far from being a record of conquering idealism, the realization of an advance in human welfare through the application of scientific knowledge to improve the natural process of birth by an altruistic profession with good reason to believe in the rightness of its methods, it turns out to be a record of the successful denial and concealment of extensive and unanimous evidence that obstetric inter vention only rarely improves the natural process. The evidence is found in the impartial statistical analyses of the actual results of care, which show consistently that birth is the safer, the less its process is interfered with. The findings of statistics are in complete accord with the expectations of biology and are in turn impressively supported by the observations of critical obstetricians, evaluating parti cular practices. Who should teil the story and present the accumulated evidence? lt might be difficult for any obstetrician to cast aside his or her loyalty to the profession and provide a dispassionate account of the whole picture.
