Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report concerns an investigation by the ICAC into the conduct of Beth Morgan, a Senior Development Project Officer at Wollongong City Council, who abused her position at the council to provide favours to developers with whom she was intimately involved by improperly approving applications for excessive developments, providing monetary concessions and supplying council information. The report also examines the corrupt behaviour of former Wollongong City councillors Valerio Zanotto, Kiril Jonovski, Zeki Esen and Frank Gigliotti, and how the behaviour of the former General Manager Rod Oxley and former senior managers Joe Scimone and John Gilbert contributed to the corruption at the Council. The conduct of Ray Younan and Gerald Carroll, who falsely represented that they were, or knew, ICAC officers and could corruptly influence the Commissions investigation in return for payments, is also explored in the report." -- publisher.

Book excerpt: This is a story of corruption, greed, politics and the powers of the ICAC. It is a Wollongong story but also a story about corruption that could happen anywhere in Australia. The work is based on the story of Rod Oxley, former CEO of Wollongong City Council, and gives his account of the ICAC investigation and hearing into corruption in the planning department of Wollongong council. One of the sensational stories which featured heavily in the media for many weeks was town planner Beth Morgan (on cover) who was found to be corrupt having had personal liaisons and accepted gifts and money from local property developers. The findings of the ICAC were to result in the entire council being sacked. Named and Shamed relates the impact the scandal has had on Oxley personally, and on Wollongong as a whole. There are some interesting lessons for people in leadership, and for public servants who might find themselves under the ICAC spotlight.

Book Local Government in Australia

Download or read book Local Government in Australia written by Bligh Grant and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a general introduction to and analysis of the history, theory and public policy of Australian local government systems. Conceived in an international comparative context and primarily from within the discipline of political studies, it also incorporates elements of economics and public administration. Existing research tends to conceptualise Australian local government as an element of public policy grounded in an 'administrative science' approach. A feature of this approach is that generally normative considerations form only a latent element of the discussions, which is invariably anchored in debates about institutional design rather than the normative defensibility of local government. The book addresses this point by providing an account of the terrain of theoretical debate alongside salient themes in public policy.

Book The Communism of Love

  • Publisher : AK Press

Download or read book The Communism of Love written by Richard Gilman-Opalsky and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the meanings and powers of love from ancient Greece to the present day, Richard Gilman-Opalsky argues that what is called “love” by the best thinkers who have approached the subject is in fact the beating heart of communism—understood as a way of living, not as a form of government. Along the way, he reveals with clarity that the capitalist way of assigning value to things is incapable of appreciating what humans value most. Capitalism cannot value the experiences and relationships that make our lives worth living and can only destroy love by turning it into a commodity. The Communism of Love follows the struggles of love in different contexts of race, class, gender, and sexuality, and shows how the aspiration for love is as close as we may get to a universal communist aspiration.

Book The Impact of Publicity on Corporate Offenders

Download or read book The Impact of Publicity on Corporate Offenders written by Brent Fisse and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1984-06-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty surrounds the use of publicity as a means of controlling corporate crime. On the one hand, some agree with Justice Brandeis's dictum that light is "the best of disinfectants...the most efficient policeman." On the other hand, many believe that corporations' internal affairs are effectively shrouded with a thick fog that prevents the light of public scrutiny from reaching them. The Impact of Publicity on Corporate Offenders is the first study to go beyond the rhetoric, through an examination of corporate experience. Fisse and Braithwaite have carried out a qualitative inquiry concerning 17 large corporations involved in publicity crises. Based mainly on interviews, the inquiry includes company employees and former employees, union officials, officers of government regulatory agencies, competitors, independent accountants, government prosecutors, public interest activists, judicial officers, stockbrokers, and other experts.
