An update on the programme of work and budget for the biennium for 2011-12 in relation to the WGFM was considered and arrangements for a number of activities finalized in terms of dates, locations and funding. A proposal by the Sultanate of Oman on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the RECOFI region was addressed again and Members undertook to follow up on assessing IUU fishing in their respective countries through the completion of a questionnaire that would be circulated prior to the sixth meeting of the WGFM in Qatar in October 2012. The WGFM considered in detail progress towards the implementation of the RECOFI Recommendation on Minimum Data Reporting (Recommendation RECOFI/6/2011/1). A preliminary review of stock and fisheries status indicators to be produced from the RECOFI fishery management database, building on past work, was reviewed and progressed. The meeting considered a RECOFI scientific working group to provide scientific advice to the Commission on aquaculture and fishery management. This matter will be addressed further at the seventh session of RECOFI in May 2013. The final substantive item addressed on the agenda was RECOFI cooperation with the Fishery Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS). The next meeting of the WGFM will be held in Qatar from 21 to 23 October 2012--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This topical and exciting textbook describes fisheries exploitation, biology, conservation and management, and reflects many recent and important changes in fisheries science. These include growing concerns about the environmental impacts of fisheries, the role of ecological interactions in determining population dynamics, and the incorporation of uncertainty and precautionary principles into management advice. The book draws upon examples from tropical, temperate and polar environments, and provides readers with a broad understanding of the biological, economic and social aspects of fisheries ecology and the interplay between them. As well as covering 'classical' fisheries science, the book focuses on contemporary issues such as industrial fishing, poverty and conflict in fishing communities, marine reserves, the effects of fishing on coral reefs and by-catches of mammals, seabirds and reptiles. The book is primarily written for students of fisheries science and marine ecology, but should also appeal to practicing fisheries scientists and those interested in conservation and the impacts of humans on the marine environment. particularly useful are the modelling chapters which explain the difficult maths involved in a user-friendly manner describes fisheries exploitation, conservation and management in tropical, temperate and polar environments broad coverage of 'clasical' fisheries science emphasis on new approaches to fisheries science and the ecosystem effects of fishing examples based on the latest research and drawn from authors' international experience comprehensively referenced throughout extensively illustrated with photographs and line drawings

This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) was established in 1948 and has undergone various reforms since then to adapt to the changing international governance of fisheries as well as reforms in the function and resourcing of FAO’s regional fishery bodies. This gradually induced a major crisis in the commission’s ability to develop and execute a work programme for servicing its members. The 36th Session of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission, held in May 2021, recognized the pressing issues of financial unsustainability and FAO's declining willingness and ability to provide Regular Programme funding for commission activities. It recommended the establishment of an 'ad hoc working group on the future of APFIC' to analyse issues and explore possible options to advise the commission on its future. In a majority, the ad hoc working group recommended to support temporary suspension of the commission, in the light of questionnaire responses and the limited prospects for identifying financial resources for the activities of the commission. It prepared a draft resolution regarding suspension for consideration by the 37th session and recommended that suspension of the commission should be for a period five years. Noting that some Member Countries supported continuation, the ad hoc working group also prepared a draft resolution for continuation of the activities of the commission, should this be the decision of the 37th session. The text of this resolution incorporates specific reference to the establishment of a financial arrangement to support the work programme of the commission.

Download or read book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020 written by FAO and published by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture has a particular focus on sustainability. This reflects a number of specific considerations. First, 2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). Second, several Sustainable Development Goal indicators mature in 2020. Third, FAO hosted the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability in late 2019, and fourth, 2020 sees the finalization of specific FAO guidelines on sustainable aquaculture growth, and on social sustainability along value chains. While Part 1 retains the format of previous editions, the structure of the rest of the publication has been revised. Part 2 opens with a special section marking the twenty fifth anniversary of the Code. It also focuses on issues coming to the fore, in particular, those related to Sustainable Development Goal 14 and its indicators for which FAO is the “custodian” agency. In addition, Part 2 covers various aspects of fisheries and aquaculture sustainability. The topics discussed range widely, from data and information systems to ocean pollution, product legality, user rights and climate change adaptation. Part 3 now forms the final part of the publication, covering projections and emerging issues such as new technologies and aquaculture biosecurity. It concludes by outlining steps towards a new vision for capture fisheries. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience – policymakers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed everyone interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Download or read book Outlook of Climate Change and Fish Nutrition written by Archana Sinha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-02 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edited book covers the climate change impact broadly across the ecosystems including increasing pressure on livelihood and food supplies to the society. Climate change, in particular, rising temperatures, can have both direct and indirect effects on global fish production. Fisheries and aquaculture is one of the important sectors of agriculture for livelihood and nutritional security. Fish, being poikilothermic in nature are very sensitive to any change in the ecosystem. In commercial aquaculture, it is crucial to ensure that environmental rearing conditions are adequate, if not optimal, for fish growth, welfare and profitability. Thus, the book develops an understanding regarding changes in relevant environmental parameters and its affect in the growth and physiological performance of fish. Fish feeds on natural food organisms, but the adverse changes in the ecosystem attracts nutritionists to provide better food and feeding strategies for optimum growth and survival of the fish. it is become necessary to develop preparedness about the changes and their mitigation strategies through fish nutrition and feeding strategies. This book addresses the potential impact of climate change on the aquaculture sector under sections - Assessment of Global Warming Impact on aquatic resources and fish production, Adaptation in Fish Digestive Physiology and Biochemistry under Changing Environment, Prioritization of fish feed technology with respect to changing climate for adaptation and mitigation, Strategies and planning on reproductive physiology and feed management for biodiversity conservation. The chapters are contributed by the experts in the field of fish nutrition and physiology. The book assists fish farmers, entrepreneurs, planners and advisors specifically related to nutritional and physico-biochemical changes in fishes to adapt or mitigate the adverse effect of climate change.
