This book was released on 2001 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is based on a review of literature and experience relating to the planning and management of aquaculture development and its integration into coastal area management. It explores in detail how more planned and integrated approaches can be applied to aquaculture development. These approaches range from "enhanced sectorial" initiatives, to incorporation within comprehensive ICM programmes.

Download or read book Towards Safe and Effective Use of Chemicals in Coastal Aquaculture written by IMO/FAO/UNESCO-IOC/WMO/WHO/IAEA/UN/UNEP Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemicals used within the aquaculture industry are identified and for each chemical a brief summary is provided on the intended purpose, the scale of its application, the aquacultural sectors and geographic locations of its principal use and its potential impact on the environment and human health. Environmental issues arising from the properties of aquacultural chemicals are discussed. The use of most chemicals in aquaculture, if carried out properly, can be regarded as wholly beneficial with no attendant adverse environmental effects or increased risks to the health of aquacultural workers. Concerns appear warranted, however, regarding the overuse and misuse of certain chemicals for which proper risk assessments with respect to the marine environment have not been conducted. A further legitimate concern and a barrier to the conduct of an exhaustive review of chemical use practices is the unavailability of quantitative data on contemporary chemical use in the aquaculture industry. The viability of contemporary aquaculture is contingent on the use of chemicals. Accordingly, with the overriding consideration should be minimizing the quantities of chemicals applied, most current uses of chemicals are essential. This study, recognizing that chemotherapeutants and pesticides in current use are of verying effectiveness and hazard, provides recommendations to promote the safe and effective use of chemicals in coastal aquaculture. Government authorities, the scientific community and the aquacultural and pharmaceutical industries all have an important to play in ensuring that chemical use is consistent with protection of environmental quality and human health.

Download or read book The Shared Marine Waters of British Columbia and Washington written by British Columbia/Washington Marine Science Panel and published by The Council. This book was released on 1994 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Columbia/Washington Marine Science Panel was created in 1993 to evaluate the condition of the marine environment in the Strait of Georgia, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound region on both sides of the international boundary. The panel was asked to produce a report on the current condition of, and trends in, the marine waters shared by the province and state. This report describes the principles followed; the region of concern; physical exchange mechanisms in the transboundary region; movements, status, and trends of transboundary biological resource populations; anthropogenic impacts on the ecosystem and humans; ecosystem sensitivity and future scope of anthropogenic impacts; and degree of harm and management priorities.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Resources of Mediterranean Pasture and Forage Legumes is a comprehensive review of grassland improvement in Mediterranean areas using legume species. The book includes a detailed account of the processes involved in understanding the ecology of legumes and their collection in the Mediterranean, through to their preliminary evaluation and storage at various Genetic Resource Centres. A generic conspectus and key to the forage legumes of the Mediterranean basin is also included. These proceedings are truly international with examples on the collection and use of Mediterranean genetic resources being illustrated by Genetic Resource Centres in Australia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Syria, Turkey and Tunisia. Current important issues such as the sustainability of Mediterranean grasslands, the risk of genetic erosion and the principles of population genetics employed during a collecting mission are discussed. The book will be of value to researchers working in the fields of grassland and rangeland improvement, Mediterranean farming systems, genetic resources, and pasture and forage ecology.
Download or read book Human Rights in Developing Countries written by P. Peter R. Baehr and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1995-09-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the "Yearbook on Human Rights in Developing Countries" focuses on government policy with regard to the relationship between human rights and development in Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway. These thematic studies make a contribution to the discussion on the role of human rights in development policy in what are termed like-minded countries. The "Yearbook" also contains eight country reports which assess human rights trends in countries in the South, covering civil and political as well as economic, social and cultural rights during the period 1992-1994. The reports have a common structure, allowing comparisons between countries. Reports appear on Bangladesh, Botswana, the Philippines and Sudan, which were last covered in the 1990 "Yearbook," and Nicaragua and Surinam, last covered in the 1991 "Yearbook," Colombia and Nigeria are reported on for the first time. The "Yearbook on Human Rights in Developing Countries" is a joint project of the Chr. Michelsen Institute, Bergen, the Norwegian Institute of Human Rights, Oslo, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM), Vienna, and the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM), Utrecht.
