Book excerpt: This work explores the prejudice that existed against women in Victorian England who joined sisterhoods and worked in orphanages and in education and were committed to social work among the urban poor. The accomplishments of the nineteenth-century nuns and the opposition they overcame should serve as both an example and encouragement to all men and women committed to the Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to capture, in brief, the fundamental changes that affected the role of religion within modern Western society? For a long time, many scholars would have answered that question in the positive; most of them would certainly have counted increasingly tolerant attitudes towards forms of religion that were once been regarded as unacceptable, as being one of those central features. In the light of the current revision of the established 'truths' concerning modern religion, it is now possible to once again address the wide-spread belief that modernity meant the gradual victory of more 'liberal' religious attitudes without running the risk of being accused of only dealing with commonplaces. Was modernity only dominated by growing tolerance? And if so, what were the forces that prompted that development? What was the nature of that sentiment? This book approaches these questions by studying the popular Protestant British view of John Henry Newman between the time of his secession 1845 and his death in 1890. It draws on a wide range of sources with a particular focus on the newspaper and periodical press. It argues that changes in popular attitudes were integral parts of the internecine religious disputes of, above all, the 1850s and 1860s. A tolerant discourse came henceforth to live side by side with traditional Protestant rhetoric. Nevertheless, and in spite of expanding horizons, accepting attitudes became an effective vehicle for expressing a sense of Protestant superiority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost three hundred years there were those in England who believed that an Italian translation of the Book of Common Prayer could trigger radical change in the political and religious landscape of Italy. The aim was to present the text to the Italian religious and political elite, in keeping with the belief that the English liturgy embodied the essence of the Church of England. The beauty, harmony, and simplicity of the English liturgical text, rendered into Italian, was expected to demonstrate that the English Church came closest to the apostolic model. Beginning in the Venetian Republic and ending with the Italian Risorgimento, the leitmotif running through the various incarnations of this project was the promotion of top-down reform according to the model of the Church of England itself. These ventures mostly had little real impact on Italian history: as Roy Foster once wrote, "the most illuminating history is often written to show how people acted in the expectation of a future that never happened." This book presents one of those histories. Making Italy Anglican tells the story of a fruitless encounter that helps us better to understand both the self-perception of the Church of England's international role and the cross-cultural and religious relations between Britain and Italy. Stefano Villani shows how Italy, as the heart of Roman Catholicism, was--over a long period of time--the very center of the global ambitions of the Church of England.

Book Report of the Trial and Preliminary Proceedings in the Case of the Queen on the Prosecution of G Achilli V Dr Newman

Download or read book Report of the Trial and Preliminary Proceedings in the Case of the Queen on the Prosecution of G Achilli V Dr Newman written by W. F. Finlason and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Trial and Preliminary Proceedings in the Case of the Queen on the Prosecution of G. Achilli V. Dr. Newman: With an Introduction, Containing Comments on the Law and on the Course and Conduct of the Trial, Also With the Pleadings and Affidavits; And Copious Notes, Particularly on the Constitution and Practice of the Court of Inquisition Such serious legal, moral, and religious considerations are involved in this case, that its publication, in a correct form, is clearly required. It has been said that the trial could only cause scandal: if it were so, Dr. Newman would not be responsible; for the prosecutor had previously published charges - gross and sweeping - involving the great body of the Catholic clergy, and Dr. Newman came forward to destroy the mischief of the scandal by removing its generality. He said "Thou art the man! These things are true, of yourself!" Moreover, there can be no scandal to the Catholic Church; for the prosecutor confesses, that from 1829 he had doubts as to her doctrines, and soon after disbelieved; nor to the Protestant, for he avows, that for many years after he was perfectly persuaded of the imposture of the Catholic doctrines, he continued zealously to teach them, and to perform a worship he believed to be idolatry. To what religion can his history now be fairly said to cause scandal? If it be said, that supposing the charges against him to be true, he must have been connived at in the Catholic Church, the answer is to be found in the evidence.
