Download or read book The World Bank Policy on Disclosure of Information written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Lewis T. Preston, President, the World Bank (1991-1995). Sets out World Bank policy on disclosure of information. The policy applies to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). This useful booklet presents the World Bank's policy on disclosure of information and describes the materials available to the public. The Bank's experience in implementing effective and sustainable development programs clearly indicates that the quality of many operations benefits when staff and government officials consult and share information with program participants. This experience inspired the Bank to launch a major review of its disclosure policy in 1993. The review resulted in a recommendation to make Bank information more publicly available. The revised policy expands the range of documents subject to release and facilitates public access to them. A significant outcome was the Bank's establishment of a Public Information Center through which much of the material covered by the revised policy is available. Also available: French (ISBN 0-8213-3129-9) Stock No. 13129; Spanish (ISBN 0-8213-3130-2) Stock No. 13130.

Download or read book Globalization of Water Governance in South Asia written by Vishal Narain and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization has significantly redefined the nature of governance in the water sector. Non-state actors—multilateral and transnational donor agencies and corporations, non-government organizations, markets, and civil society at large—are assuming a bigger role in public policy-making for water resource management. New discourses on neoliberalism, integrated water resource management (IWRM), public–private partnerships, privatization, and gender equity have come to influence water governance. Drawing upon detailed case studies from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, this volume shows the implications of these new global paradigms for water allocation and management practices, institutions and governance structures in South Asia. It suggests that, despite claims to the contrary, they have done little to further human well-being, reduce gender disparity, or improve accountability and transparency in the system. Steering away from blueprint approaches, it argues for a more nuanced and contextual understanding of water management challenges, based on local knowledge and initiatives. This book will be useful to those interested in political economy and water governance, natural resource management, environmental studies, development studies, and public administration, as well as to water professionals, policy-makers and civil society activists.
Download or read book The Irrigation Sector written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's irrigated agriculture sector has been basic to India's economic development and poverty alleviation. One of India's major achievements is its rapid expansion of irrigation and drainage infrastructure. However, the major emphasis on development has been achieved at a cost. The importance put on new construction has diverted attention away from the need to ensure the quality, productivity, and sustainability of the services. Further, a governmental subsidy based approach has been used and this has resulted in irrigation and drainage services which, while enabling significantly higher productivity than from non-irrigated lands, are well below their potential. 'The Irrigation Sector' discusses directions for future growth, the framework for reform, and the reform agenda.

Download or read book Mechanization for Rural Development written by Josef Kienzle and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gives a wide-ranging perspective on the present state of mechanization in the developing world, and, as such, constitutes a solid platform on which to build strategies for a sustainable future. Farm mechanization forms an integral plank in the implementation of sustainable crop production intensification methodologies and sustainable intensification necessarily means that the protection of natural resources and the production of ecosystem services go hand-in-hand with intensified production practices. This requires specific mechanization measures to allow crops to be established with minimum soil disturbance, to allow the soil to be protected under organic cover for as long as possible, and to establish crop rotations and associations to feed the soil and to exploit crop nutrients from various soil horizons. This work is the starting point to help the reader understand the complexities and requirements of the task ahead.
