Book Increasing the Contribution of Small scale Fisheries to Poverty Alleviation and Food Security

Download or read book Increasing the Contribution of Small scale Fisheries to Poverty Alleviation and Food Security written by Christophe Béné and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and main section of the document discusses ways of increasing the contribution of small-scale fisheries to poverty alleviation and food security through nine main entry points. First, the paper revisits conventional fisheries policies and legislation and makes suggestions on how those can be made more pro-poor. Next, the paper emphasizes the importance of capacity building and highlights how cross-sectoral interventions can greatly improve the livelihoods of fish-dependent communities. The paper then proposes a series of broad pro-poor or pro-small-scale fisheries principles, before discussing in greater detail three of the main management instruments adopted in fisheries: (i) property right approaches; (ii) co-management; and (iii) protected areas. The next two sub-sections discuss markets and how to make them work for the poor, and the important issue of pro-poor financing systems and subsidies.

Book Report of the FAO Expert Consultation on the Economic Social and Institutional Considerations of Applying the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Rome 6 9 June 2006

Download or read book Report of the FAO Expert Consultation on the Economic Social and Institutional Considerations of Applying the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Rome 6 9 June 2006 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Expert Consultation was convened by FAO in order to elaborate a framework for technical guidelines on the economic, social and institutional considerations (e.g. information processes and approaches) needed in the application of the ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAF). The Expert Consultation provided specific guidance for the finalization of a technical paper based on a revision and elaboration of the background document presented and produced a detailed outline for the preparation of new technical guidelines. The Expert Consultation also noted the need to clearly explain the current interpretation of the term EAF, expressing the ideas of a holistic, participatory and integrated approach to fisheries management. The Expert Consultation recognized that the move towards EAF would, in many instances, be accomplished on an incremental and adaptive management basis in view of each specific context being addressed.

This final report presents the strategic development process for the guidelines, which consisted of an extensive consultation process with governments, regional organizations, civil-society organizations (CSOs) and small-scale fishers, fish workers and their communities. The consultation brought together 38 participants representing governments, the fishing industry and CSOs from 17 countries and territories in the Pacific Islands region to share experiences with SSF policies and practices, and to provide advice for improvement of the guidelines. It also emphasised the importance of encouraging policies to protect small-scale fisheries livelihoods, to promote income opportunities and to emphasise the socio-economic and cultural importance of small-scale fisheries for the Pacific islands region.

Book The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2020

Download or read book The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2020 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of the State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries provides a comprehensive overview of the status of fisheries in the region, looking at their main features and trends, in order to better inform their management and better examine current and future challenges that they will face in the near future. The aim of this report is to produce a document that could provide useful analysis and direction for decision-making and future action. In this respect, this publication also represents a convenient source of information for the FAO Committee on Fisheries and offers a practical complement to the data provided in the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture published by the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department. This volume includes seven chapters divided into two sections: a first part on the status and trends of different aspects of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, including fleet, catches, socio-economic variables and bycatch, and a second part that focuses on the management of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, including an overview on small-scale fisheries. This report is based to a large extent on the most up-to-date data available submitted by GFCM contracting and cooperating non-contracting parties, including information on stock status, national catches, fleet and socio-economic information up to 2018. It is also complemented with information from other sources.

Book The United Nations World Water Development Report 3

Download or read book The United Nations World Water Development Report 3 written by World Water Assessment Programme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations World Water Development Report, published every three years, is a comprehensive review providing an authoritative picture of the state of the world's freshwater resources. It offers best practices as well as in-depth theoretical analyses to help stimulate ideas and actions for better stewardship in the water sector. It is the only report of its kind, resulting from the collaboration and contributions of the 26 UN agencies, commissions, program, funds, secretariats and conventions that have a significant role in addressing global water concerns. The news media are full of talk of crises - in climate change, energy and food and troubled financial markets. These crises are linked to each other and to water resources management. Unresolved, they may lead to increasing political insecurity and conflict. Water is required to meet our fundamental needs and rising living standards and to sustain our planet‘s fragile ecosystems. Pressures on the resource come from a growing and mobile population, social and cultural change, economic development and technological change. Adding complexity and risk is climate change, with impacts on the resource as well as on the sources of pressure on water. The challenges, though substantial, are not insurmountable. The Report shows how some countries have responded. Progress in providing drinking water is heartening, with the Millennium Development Goal target on track in most regions. But other areas remain unaddressed, and after decades of inaction, the problems in water systems are enormous and will worsen if left unattended. Leaders in the water sector can inform decisions outside their domain and manage water resources to achieve agreed socioeconomic objectives and environmental integrity. Leaders in government, the private sector and civil society determine these objectives and allocate human and financial resources to meet them. Recognizing this responsibility, they must act now! Book Poverty Mosaics Realities and Prospects in Small Scale Fisheries

Download or read book Poverty Mosaics Realities and Prospects in Small Scale Fisheries written by Svein Jentoft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-scale fisheries are a major source of food and employment around the world. Yet, many small-scale fishers work in conditions that are neither safe nor secure. Millions of them are poor, and often they are socially and politically marginalized. Macro-economic and institutional mechanisms are essential to address these poverty and vulnerability problems; however, interventions at the local community level are also necessary. This requires deep understanding of what poverty means to the fishers, their families and communities; how they cope with it; and the challenges they face to increase resiliency and improve their lives for the better. This book provides a global perspective, situating small-scale fisheries within the broad academic discourse on poverty, fisheries management and development. In-depth case studies from fifteen countries in Latin America, Europe, South and Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, demonstrate the enormously complex ecological, economic, social, cultural and political contexts of this sector. Conclusions for policy-making, formulated as a joint statement by the authors, argue that fisheries development, poverty alleviation, and resource management must be integrated within a comprehensive governance approach that also looks beyond fisheries. The scientific editors, Svein Jentoft and Arne Eide, are both with the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics, University of Tromsø, Norway.
