It explores the vital role religious and spiritual beliefs play in sustaining people in such a precarious, even deadly occupation. Despite periodic natural calamities and the extreme challenges that accompany their everyday lives, a remarkable spirit of resilience is evident in this coastal community. Using the concept of 'lived religion,' Mathew explores the theological, religious, and spiritual contours of this remarkable community, and draws from them broader insights into the nature of belief.

Book excerpt: Drawing on an unusually rich empirical base, this timely and compelling book examines how environmental values are constructed and legitimized within the policy process. It trains the spotlight on four environmentally significant countries - China, Japan, India, and the United States - representing a wide diversity of cultural, social, economic, and political characteristics. Through a combination of case studies and comparative analysis, the contributors illuminate cultural assumptions, standards, and analytic techniques that shape environmental actions and policies around the world. "Forging Environmentalism" provides valuable direction regarding what can be done to secure public support for environmental policies. Incorporating expert legal, economic, philosophical, sociological, and political perspective points the way toward the possibilities for a convergence of environmental norms and values across diverse cultures.
Download or read book Studies on the Role of Fishermen s Organizations in Fisheries Management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1988 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains two papers on the role of fishermen's organizations in fisheries management. The paper by Rgnvaldur Hannesson discusses the pros and cons of giving fishermen's organizations specific roles in fisheries management . It reviews the practical experiences of groups and organizations of fishermen in fisheries management in a number of industrialized countries including Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Canada and the United Kingdom, as documented in the literature. Hannesson stresses that the outcome of giving fishermen's organizations a say in fisheries management depends crucially on the economic framework and philosophy prevailing in each country . On theoretical grounds, he contends that a pseudo-market solution, i.e., the allocation of private property rights accompanied by (i) an appropriate tax system to prevent a concentration of profits and incomes and by (ii) conditionality of transferability to avoid concentration of ownership, may best achieve the twin objectives of efficiency and equity. The paper by John Kurien sets out with a historic-cultural review of small-scale fisheries in the Indo-Pacific region. Traditionally, many communities had adopted well integrated systems of governing fishing practices and rights of access to the sea.

This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropological studies of marine fishermen have explored immense diversity among fishing societies, and the management strategies of marine resources in the context of globalization and changing technologies deserve the utmost attention from researchers in an uncertain economy. In India, fishing communities belong to various different castes and religions. This book presents an anthropological study of Hindu marine fishermen in two neighboring fishing villages situated in the same coastal belt, but administered by two different state governments (Kerala and Pondicherry). It explores the ways in which state interventions influence the development paradigm of a marginalized society like marine fishermen, and discusses the distribution pattern of production systems and its significance at the household level. The book also considers the gendered forms of economic transformation in fishing due to declining marine resources, and technological and climate change. It also focuses on the role of women fish vendors in market spaces as instituted by their distribution and credit connections and the unique experiences of the development process through anxieties, compromises and survival in an uncertain economy. The book will be of interest to researchers, administrators and NGOs working for the inclusive development of marginalized communities sharing common property resources.

This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Demographic change in fishing communities has implications for the future of fishing, fisheries, the fishing industry, and the social development of fishing communities in the Asian region. This publication looks at demographic change in small-scale fishing communities to understand potential implications for fisheries sustainability, migration patterns, climate change adaptation, and livelihoods diversification. The publication explores the general question: How are fishing communities in the region changing with demographic changes? Specifically the publication tries to address the following questions: (1) What are the changes in demography (ageing, migration) in selected Asian fishing communities? (2) How are fishers adjusting their livelihoods with the changes in fishery resources and labour availability? Are they moving to other livelihoods? (3) What are the consequences of these adaptation strategies? Are there any gender differences in the impact of such adaptation strategies? (4) What are the challenges faced and policy and programme support needed for fishing communities for sustainable small-scale fisheries?
