This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries, 1905, Vol. 25 Although it was apparent from the original description and Dr. Gilbert's notes that the trout described by Dr. Jordan was a fish of unusual beauty, and that the species found in Volcano Creek was even more beautiful, little was added to our knowledge of the trout of the Kern River region until recently. From time to time reports had come to the Bureau of Fisheries regarding the beauty, gameness, and delicious flavor of the golden trout of Volcano Creek, and then the fear began to be expressed that, owing to its extremely restricted habitat and the ease with which it may be captured, the species was in danger of extermination. Stewart Edward White visited the region in 1903 and, impressed with the ease with which the extinction of the species could be compassed, called the attention of the President to the matter and the President in turn brought it to the attention of Hon. George M. Bowers, Commissioner of Fisheries. Complying with the request of the President, the Commissioner ordered an investigation to be made for the purpose of determining (a) the natural geographic distribution of this trout, (b) its abundance, (0) its habits as to food and spawning time and its qualities as a food and game fish. (d) into what waters, if any, it has been transplanted, (e) into what other streams it 'iay be introduced, (f) whether its artificial propagation can be undertaken by the Bureau, and, finally, (g) what measures or regulations, if any, are necessary for the adequate protection of the species. An investigating party, under the writer's dirce tion, 'l outfitted at Redstone Park, Tulare County, Cal., with saddle horses, pack animals, and camping equipment, and on July 13, 1904, started for Volcano Creek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Department of Fisheries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania From June 1, 1903, to November 30, 1904 In carrying on my work, I wish to express my hearty appreciation of the cordial assistance which was given by my office force. My clerk, Major Barton D. Evans, has exhibited intense interest in his duties and in their performance has been neglectful of time. He has been found regularly at his desk in the evenings as well as during the day, and during my frequent absences through the State on official business I have felt that the Office was safe in his care. While his duties were not of such a varied character as those of Major Evans, yet I can give the same measure of praise to my stenographer, \villiard R. Black. He too has exhibited an unselfish and warm interest in the Department and has always been at com mand when needed. Before entering into detail on the work of the Department for the year, it may be well to lay before you in summary form some of the things which have been accomplished during the fiscal year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Department of Fisheries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, From December 1, 1904 to November 30, 1905 Pennsylvania's commercial fisheries in Lake Erie rank second among the States which border on this lake. The value of the catch in 1905 was for pounds of fish, a decrease of about and pounds of fish. The decrease was caused through a partial enforcement of the new closed season and heavy storms on the lake. The catch of shad in the Delaware river was at least fish with a value of This was a decrease in the catch by nearly fish, but this is believed to have been due chiefly to the low temperature of the water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Department of Fisheries: From December 1, 1909 to November 30, 1910 The following figures gives the value of the catch for each year since 1903 excepting 1904, when no records were obtainable: It is noteworthy at the catch of yellow perch, also appreciably in creased. A heavy fallott' in the catch of yellow pike is also noticed and this emphasizes the belief which 1 expressed in my report last year, that a large proportion of the eggs received at the Erie station from Ohio waters are in reality blue pike and not yellow pike. This is the only conclusion to be drawn unless the belief of many fishermen is true, that the Pennsylvania and New York end of Lake Erie is not as favorable for yellow pike as the Ohio end, and that the millions of fry planted as soon as they are large enough make their way to more congenial waters. The effect of planting blue pike is plainly visible, as is also the planting of lake herring and white fish, but a glance over the table giving the catch for the last seven years does not show an increase in the catch of yellow pike in proportion to the fry planted, as is the case with the other fishes just named. It is stated that the yellow pike is markedly increasing at the upper end of the lake in Ohio waters where the United States Government is stocking very heavily, and it is quite possible that our plantings may be swelling the number. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Department of Fisheries: From December 1, 1907, to November 30, 1908 The work of the Department of Fisheries ending November 80, 1908, was on even a broader scale than the previous year although it was hampered somewhat near the close by a lack of ample funds. Indeed the sum at the disposal of the Department was such that on the last days I was compelled to issue an order that all expenditures during the close of the fiscal year should be confined to the fixed charges and the necessary messenger expenses in the transportation of fish. Improvements were made during the year in all the hatcher ies and in the newer establishments some extensions completed, ex tensions which should result nex t year in a greatly increased output of fish. Book Report of the Commissioner Vol 24

Download or read book Report of the Commissioner Vol 24 written by George M. Bowers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report of the Commissioner - United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries, 1899 is a multi-volume book series published by the United States Bureau of Fisheries. This organization was established in 1871 and was tasked with studying fisheries and recommending solutions to noted declines in the stock of fish used as food for American supply and sale. The commissioner for this volume was George M. Bowers, an American politician who was the United States Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries from 1989 to 1903 and the Director of the United States Bureau of Fisheries from 1903-1913. Later in his career, Bowers would go on to represent West Virginia in the United States House of Representatives for four consecutive terms. The book begins with the Report of the Commissioner and continues with several reports written by other members of the bureau including: "Report on the Propagation and Distribution of Food-Fishes"; "Report on Inquiry Respecting Food-Fishes and the Fishing-Grounds"; and "Report of the Division of Statistics and Methods of the Fisheries." This text is also full of interesting information, including several species of fish found in the United States, fish related animals and insects, and region highlights of the fisheries in Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Texas. . Together, these reports give the reader a historic glimpse of fish populations in the United States and the various fishery practices and problems. Report of the Commissioner - United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries, 1899 is an intriguing read for biologists, historians, and fishermen alike. While initially the content may strike the reader as dry, the acute attention to detail and the historical significance of this text are compelling in their own right and offer insight into fishery practices at the turn of the twentieth century. This book is approachable to any reader who is interested in the politics and history of fisheries in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Department of Fisheries: From December 1, 1910, to November 30, 1911 Neither the conduct of the warden or the defendant can be com mended, and whilst the evidence has convinced us of the technical guilt of the defendant, we do not feel as though under all the circum stances as disclosed by the evidence we should impose upon the de fendant so large a penalty of one hundred dollars and costs, yet the act imposes no other penalty, nor have we any discretion as to the amount of the penalty.
