Download or read book The Shadow in the Cave written by Anthony Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1973, The Shadow in the Cave explores the history of broadcasting conflicts and shows how they are built into the very roots of broadcasting. Every nation has built into its radio and television system a coded version of anxieties about the nature and effects of mass communication. The whole of the culture of broadcasting- its genres and its style – is an expression of the dilemmas which have bedevilled broadcasting form the moment of its invention. Anthony Smith’s book provides for the first time a connected and carefully researched picture of the real issues involved in the debate about broadcasting. This book shows how the argument about levels of taste in broadcasting, about balance and fairness, about trivialisation, control and freedom of access are elements of a gigantic problem which threatens the whole structure of democratic freedom. The book shows some of the path to be taken if broadcasting is not to undermine the basic notion of freedom of expression. Topical, subtle and revealing, this is an important historical document, a must read for scholars and researchers of media studies, news media, media history, mass communication and political studies.

Download or read book The Dynamics of Regulation Global Control Local Resistance written by George Gantzias and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. New technologies and the liberalization of the broadcasting and telecommunications market, together with the digitalization and globalization of new services, have challenged irrevocably not only the traditional markets and instructional structures but also the legal systems of broadcasting and telecommunication sectors in the 21st century. This text takes into account changes in digital broadcasting and telecommunication by pointing out that convergence is the process through which broadcasting, telecommunication, press and information sectors are transformed into new sectors (info-com arteries, info-com products, info-com services and info-com content) in order to be fully compatible with the emerging new info-communication industry in the digital transformation and info-communication era.
Download or read book Narrating Media History written by Michael Bailey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the work of media historian, James Curran, Narrating Media History explores British media history as a series of competing narratives. This unique and timely collection brings together leading international media history scholars, not only to identify and contrast the various interrelationships between media histories, but also to encourage dialogue between different historical, political, and theoretical perspectives including: liberalism, feminism, populism, nationalism, libertarianism, radicalism and technological determinism. Essays by distinguished academics cover television, radio, newspaper press and advertising (among others) and illustrate the particularities, affinities, strengths and weaknesses within media history. Each section includes a brief introduction by the editor, with discussion topics and suggestions for further reading, making this an invaluable guide for students of media history.

Download or read book Organising the Propaganda Instrument The British Experience written by J.B. Black and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systematic use of propaganda is very much a phenomenon of the 20th century. Through the years, kings, political leaders, and statesmen have often made use of what might now be called "propaganda tech niques" but it is only within the present century that the use of pro paganda has been developed as a systematic instrument of national and foreign policy. Nonetheless, since World War II propaganda has become a regular peacetime instrument of foreign policy for most states, be they large or small. While some considerable attention has been given to the propaganda organisations and activities of the United States and certain Com munist nations, especially the U.S.S.R., relatively little has been done on the British approach to propaganda. The present study attempts to at least partially fill that vacuum. A history of the overseas Informa tion Services is not undertaken and I will leave that important task to future scholars. Instead I have examined the British approach to the organisation of propaganda and the mechanics they have developed to utilize this instrument of foreign policy.
