Book The Violent World of Broadus Miller

Download or read book The Violent World of Broadus Miller written by Kevin W. Young and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1927, an itinerant Black laborer named Broadus Miller was accused of killing a fifteen-year-old white girl in Morganton, North Carolina. Miller became the target of a massive manhunt lasting nearly two weeks. After he was gunned down in the North Carolina mountains, his body was taken back to Morganton and publicly displayed on the courthouse lawn on a Sunday afternoon, attracting thousands of spectators. Kevin W. Young vividly illustrates the violence-wracked world of the early twentieth century in the Carolinas, the world that created both Miller and the hunters who killed him. Young provides a panoramic overview of this turbulent time, telling important contextual histories of events that played into this tragic story, including the horrific prison conditions of the era, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, and the influx of Black immigrants into North Carolina. More than an account of a single murder case, this book vividly illustrates the stormy race relations in the Carolinas during the early 1900s, reminding us that the legacy of this era lingers into the present.

Book South Carolina State University

Download or read book South Carolina State University written by William C Hine and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent history of one of South Carolina's historically black colleges and its significant role in the civil rights movement Since its founding in 1896, South Carolina State University has provided vocational, undergraduate, and graduate education for generations of African Americans. Now the state's flagship historically black university, it achieved this recognition after decades of struggling against poverty, inadequate infrastructure and funding, and social and cultural isolation. In South Carolina State University: A Black Land-Grant College in Jim Crow America, William C. Hine examines South Carolina State's complicated start, its slow and long-overdue transition to a degree-granting university, and its significant role in advancing civil rights in the state and country. A product of the state's "separate but equal" legislation, South Carolina State University was a hallmark of Jim Crow South Carolina. Black and white students were indeed provided separate colleges, but the institutions were in no way equal. When established, South Carolina State emphasized vocational and agricultural subjects as well as teacher training for black students while the University of South Carolina offered white students a broad range of higher-level academic and professional course work leading to a bachelor's degree. Through the middle decades of the twentieth century, South Carolina State was an incubator for much of the civil rights activity in the state. The tragic Orangeburg massacre on February 8, 1968, occurred on its campus and resulted in the deaths of three students and the wounding of twenty-eight others. Using the university as a lens, Hine examines the state's history of race relations, poverty and progress, and the politics of higher education for whites and blacks from the Reconstruction era into the twenty-first century. Hine's work showcases what the institution has achieved as well as what was required for the school to achieve the parity it was once promised. This fascinating account is replete with revealing anecdotes, more than sixty photographs and illustrations, and a cast of famous figures including Benjamin R. Tillman, Coleman Blease, Benjamin E. Mays, Marian Birnie Wilkinson, Mary McLeod Bethune, Modjeska Simkins, Strom Thurmond, Essie Mae Washington Williams, James F. Byrnes, John Foster Dulles, James E. Clyburn, and Willie Jeffries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports and Resolutions of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, Vol. 3: Regular Session Commencing January 11, 1910 State of South Carolina, Executive Department, Office of Secretary of State, Columbia, S. C., January 1, 1910. To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina. Gentlemen: I have the honor to submit, in compliance with Statute law, my annual report as Secretary of State, showing the various transactions of this office for the fiscal year commencing January 1, 1909, and ending January 1, 1910. Numerous requests being received from various sources in and out of the State for lists of county and other officers and for charters issued, following the custom of my administration, I have divided this report into two parts for the convenience of mailing. Part I contains a list of charters issued, renewed and amended; increases and decreases of capital stock allowed; a full record of dissolution of chapters; papers filed by foreign corporations; a synopsis of rail road papers filed for record, and a list of all commissions issued to municipal, railroad and private companies. Part II contains a list of commissions issued to State, district, county and other officers; Notaries Public, Commissioners of Deeds; a list of bonds filed, which have been turned over to the State Treasurer as provided by law, and miscellaneous matter in general. I have attested, sealed and recorded all pardons, paroles, respite of sentences and commutations granted by the Governor, and a full register of all bonds and certificates of stock, showing the numbers and amounts thereof, and the names of parties by whom surrendered and to whom issued, have been kept, but they have been omitted from this report for the reason that they will appear in the report of the State Treasurer. All bonds of State and other officers, declarations, commissions, return of corporators, charters and other papers, required by law to be recorded in this office, have been duly recorded, the proper endorsement made on each original paper and every record has been fully and properly indexed.
