Laurent" was secured alongside at the Dartmouth, Nova Scotai, marine base, when fire occurred in the ship's forward propulsion motor room. The fire was extinguished by the ship's crew and damage was confined to the port propulsion motor and the deckhead above. There were no fatalities, injuries or pollution as a result of the fire; however, cost estimates to repair the damage are in the order of $1.2 million. Although the fire was extinguished before becoming 'major' in nature, the resulting cost of repairs and loss of important icebreaking services made the casualty a particularly serious one for the Coast Guard.

"Heather Sea" as the vessel was returning to port after servicing an oil drilling rig off the coast of Nova Scotia. The fire was extinguished by the vessel's crew and the "Heather Sea" returned to port using reduce power. There were no fatalities, injuries or pollution reported as a result of this incident, however the vessel's port main engine was required to be completely dismantled and rebuilt.

Book excerpt: During the morning of September 9, 1985, a fire broke out in the engine room of the Japanese fishing vessel "Daishin Maru N0.16" while she was secured alongside a fueling berth in St. John's, Newfoundland. Efforts to control the blaze by the vessel's crew and subsequently by the St. John's City Fire Department were unsuccessful. The "Daishin Maru No. 16" was towed out of the harbour and sank early the following morning. The vessel was a total loss. The casualty resulted in the death of one crewmember and in minor injuries to three other crewmembers. Several firemen required treatment for smoke inhalation and ammonia gas irritation. Some pollution was reported when the vessel sank, however, this was rapidly dissipated in the existing sea conditions.
