Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Condition of Woman and Child Wage-Earners in the United States, Vol. 17 of 19 The term cotton-mill anemia is not in general use in medical literature, but is not infrequently heard in certain parts Of the United States. It is adopted in this report for the reason that it is the only term with which I have become familiar as applied to the particular cases under discussion as found in the mills. That there is a widespread and in numerous cases a severe anemia found among the cotton-mill hands Of certain districts is and must be frankly admitted by any fair-minded investigator who studies any large number of mills in the States involved. Opinion has, however, differed as to the cause of the condition. Among the explanations as to its cause may be mentioned the following in particular: Poor food, poor ventilation, long hours of work, beginning work too young, use Of tobacco (including snuff), and especially breathing m the cotton lint. In discussing the subject with various persons, including the mill hands themselves, the cotton-lint hypothesis has been presented to me more frequently than have all other explanations combined. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Condition of Woman and Child Wage-Earners in the United States, Vol. 8 of 19: Juvenile Delinquency and Its Relation to Employment The investigation made for the court, however, rarely covers all the points on which information is needed for such a study as this; so arrangements were made to supplement it by personal interviews, and by the knowledge, recorded or unrecorded, which the probation officers had gathered in the course of their work. Their familiarity with the character and surroundings of the children committed to their care has been of the greatest possible value in this investigation, which indeed could hardly have been satisfactorily carried through without their assistance and Cooperation. Anyone familiar with court proceedings knows that among juve niles, as among their elders, the court records are apt to Show waves of certain offenses, and that these waves have little connection with the amount of a given kind of delinquency occurring at a partic ular time. A gang of boys, for instance, may be in the habit of playing around the railroad yards, the nearest open place accessible to them. Technically this is trespassing on railroad property, but the boys are doing no harm, and good-natured employees or watch men look the other way. But some day a boy playing there throws a stone through the window of a moving passenger train or changes a signal light or throws a switch to see what will happen. That particular offender may escape, but the edict goes forth that boys are to be kept off, and there is a sudden and purely temporary increase in the number of delinquents brought in for trespass on the railway. Or again, a gang of fifteen or twenty boys may have been carrying on a series of petty breaks for some time, when one of their num ber falls into the hands of the police. Through this one the other members of the gang may be brought in, and the number of cases of larceny or burglary for that month may run up far beyond the normal figure. For the sake of obviating an undue weight or in u ence of these uctuations, it was felt that a sufficiently long period must be studied to obtain the average level of offenses. In the course of a year these variations might be expected to offset one another, so a year was taken as the period to be covered. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Condition of Woman and Child Wage-Earners in the United States, Vol. 9 of 19: History of Women in Industry in the United States The history of women in industry in the United States is the story of a great industrial readjustment, which has not only carried woman's work from the home to the factory, but has changed its economic character from unpaid production for home consumption to gainful employment in the manufacture of articles for sale. Women have always worked, and their work has probably always been quite as important a factor in the total economy of society as it is to-day. But during the nineteenth century a transformation occurred in their economic position and in the character and conditions of their work. Their unpaid services have been transformed into paid serv ices, their work has been removed from the home to the factory and workshop, their range of possible employment has been increased and at the same time their monopoly of their traditional occupations has been destroyed. The individuality of their work has been lost in a standardized product. The story of woman's work in gainful employments is a story of constant changes or shiftings of work and workshop, accompanied by long hours, low wages, insanitary conditions, overwork, and the want on the part of the woman of training, skill, and vital interest in her work. It is a story of monotonous machine labor, of division and subdivision of tasks until the woman, like the traditional tailor who is called the ninth part of a man, is merely a fraction, and that rarely as much even as a tenth part, of an artisan. It is a story, moreover, of underbidding, of strike breaking, of the lowering of standards for men breadwinners. For many generations it has been a large employer of child labor, and in more recent years it has become an important employer Of woman labor. Essentially spectacular in its processes, it has everywhere attracted the attention of those interested in the prob lems of child labor; and it has thus played a large part in molding that public sentiment which is everywhere being expressed in laws.
