Book The transformation of irrigation boards into water user associations in South Africa Case studies of the Lower Olifants Great Letaba and Vaalharts water user associations Volume 1

Download or read book The transformation of irrigation boards into water user associations in South Africa Case studies of the Lower Olifants Great Letaba and Vaalharts water user associations Volume 1 written by Seshoka, Jetrickde Lange, WillemFaysse, Nicolas and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2004 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first case study is the Lower Olifants WUA in the Western Cape, which was the first WUA in South Africa. Its principal functions are to operate and maintain a canal that enables irrigation throughout the year in an arid region. Around 9,200 hectares are irrigated, mainly for vineyards. The second case study relates to the Great Letaba WUA in the Limpopo Province. This WUA manages the allocation of water downstream of two large dams, near the town of Tzaneen. An area of 12,500 hectares is irrigated in the river valley, mainly for fruit tree farming. The third case study assesses the Vaalharts WUA, which is situated in both Northern Cape and North West provinces. This WUA is one of the largest irrigation schemes in South Africa (37,100 hectares overall). It manages mainly a canal that takes water from the Vaal River to irrigate commercial farms and, downstream, the Taung Irrigation Scheme in the former Bophuthatswana homeland.

Book Transforming Water Management in South Africa

Download or read book Transforming Water Management in South Africa written by Barbara Schreiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the early set of reforms that South Africa embarked on after emerging from apartheid was in the water sector, following a remarkable, consultative process. The policy and legal reforms were comprehensive and covered almost all aspects of water management including revolutionary changes in defining and allocating rights to water, radical reforms in water management and supply institutions, the introduction of the protection of environmental flows, and major shifts in charging for water use and in the provision of free basic water. Over ten years of implementation of these policy and legislative changes mean that valuable lessons have already been learned and useful experiences gained in the challenge of effective water resources management and water services provision in a middle income country.

Book The transformation of irrigation boards into water user associations in South Africa Case studies of the Umlaas Komati Lomati and Hereford Irrigation Boards Volume 2

Download or read book The transformation of irrigation boards into water user associations in South Africa Case studies of the Umlaas Komati Lomati and Hereford Irrigation Boards Volume 2 written by Nicolas Faysse and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2004 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first case study deals with the Umlaas IB in KwaZulu-Natal. This Board manages water use in the upper part of the Mlazi River catchment. Around 4,000 ha are irrigated, mainly to produce maize and sugar cane. Times of water scarcity are rare. Slopes in the upper parts of the catchment are steep and the IB along with the upstream rural communities and commercial forestry companies, have undertaken several initiatives to address erosion problems in the area, with the cooperation of these companies. The second case study relates to the Komati and Lomati IBs in Mpumalanga. The irrigated area of around 21,000 ha is mainly dedicated to sugarcane farming. It hosts the largest area of small-scale irrigation farming in South Africa, but periods of water scarcity are frequent. While the IBs have not transformed into WUAs yet, they have already incorporated the emerging farmers in their area of jurisdiction, as well as in the management of water. The third case study assesses the Hereford IB in Mpumalanga. The Board manages an earthen canal, mainly for citrus and wheat farming, on a total area of 3,400 ha. Small-scale farmers have settled on an abandoned commercial farm, and the current upgrading of the emerging farmers’ scheme and the setting-up of water meters open the way for the meaningful integration of the emerging farmers in the forthcoming WUA.

Book Irrigation and River Basin Management

Download or read book Irrigation and River Basin Management written by Mark Svendsen and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing water scarcity, pressure to re-allocate water from agriculture to other uses mounts, along with a need to put in place institutional arrangements to promote 'higher value' uses of water. Many developing countries are now experimenting with establishing new institutional arrangements for managing water at the river basin level. This book, based on research by IWMI and others, reviews basin management in six developed and developing countries. It describes and applies a functional theory of river basin management, based on the idea that there is a minimum set of functions required to manage basins effectively and a set of basic conditions that enable effective management institutions to emerge. The book examines the experiences of both developed and developing countries in order to see what lessons can be learned and to identify what constitutes the core of a 'theory of river basin management'. It concludes that although it is difficult for developing countries to adopt approaches and institutional designs directly from developed countries, basic principles and lessons are transferable.

Book Agroforestry for Commodity Production Ecological and Social Dimensions

Download or read book Agroforestry for Commodity Production Ecological and Social Dimensions written by Shibu Jose and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry systems have been touted as sustainable production systems that alleviate many of the environmental problems associated with modern production systems. Are they indeed ecologically and economically sustainable? Using case studies from around the globe, this book highlights the potential of agroforestry systems to produce a broad range of commodities. In addition to addressing the biophysical and socioeconomic dimensions of producing traditional food, fodder and fiber crops, this volume examines the potential to integrate biomass crops, botanicals and ornamental plants into agroforestry practices. The book should be particularly useful to students, professionals, researchers and policy makers involved in natural resource management, agroforestry, and environmental management.

Book River Basin Trajectories

Download or read book River Basin Trajectories written by François Molle and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 11 papers which cover a range of vital topics in the areas of water, agriculture, food security and ecosystems - the entire spectrum of developing and managing water in agriculture, from fully irrigated to fully rainfed lands. They are about people and society, why they decide to adopt certain practices and not others and, in particular, how water management can help poor people. They are about ecosystems - how agriculture affects ecosystems, the goods and services ecosystems provide for food security and how water can be managed to meet both food and environmental security objectives. This is the eighth book in the series.

Book South Africa s Agrarian Question

Download or read book South Africa s Agrarian Question written by Hubert Cochet and published by HSRC Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an in-depth analysis of several contrasting agricultural regions, this book aims to assess South Africa's ongoing agrarian reform and the country's agrarian dynamics. Without fundamentally questioning the highly specialized, fossil energy and synthetic input dependent, oligopolistic entrepreneurial agricultural production model, which is presently structuring the sector and is guiding the reforms, a more equitable redistribution of resources and value-addition will by no means be possible. This book examines and contributes to the structural questions that underpin the current stagnation of South Africa's agrarian reform. Presenting fresh approaches in analysing agrarian issues and tools to assess farming systems and agricultural development, this incisive study will be an important resource to policy makers, academics and those with an interest in agrarian reform.
