Book A Draft International Criminal Code and Draft Statute for an International Criminal Tribunal

This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text no. 1: The variety of topics covered & the quality of the contributors make these two volumes a necessary part of any law library in the world. The essays are designed to overlap in the well-tested & established fields & branches of law dealing with contemporary issues which lawyers, diplomats, political scientists, politicians & research scholars are familiar with. The essays fully demonstrate the depth of knowledge of the eminent professors & specialists who have written them. The two volumes of essays are divided into seven parts. Volume One, entitled Contemporary International Law & Human Rights , focuses essentially on subjects relating to International Law & is divided into three sections. Part one of the first volume encompasses Topics in International Law such as Some New Thoughts on the Codification of International Law by his Excellency Judge Roberto Ago; Evidence in the Procedure of the International Court of Justice: The Role of the Court by His Excellency Judge Manfred Lachs; The Validity of International Law: an Empirical Experiment by Professor Georg Schwarzenberger, with a particularly engaging & incisive Introduction to the two volumes of Essays by Professor Ian Brownlie, Q.C. Human rights subjects still hold pride of place in the thinking of many legal experts & scholars & that is clearly reflected here. The title of the second volume is African Law & Comparative Public Law. Part Five of the essays contains topics of interest in the African Legal system which has its roots in the British Common Law System. Constitutional Law is broadly covered in part six which forms a section of its own in Volume Two. Text no. 2: This Festschrift pays tribute to Judge Taslim Olawale Elias, the leading African exponent of International Law to date. The two volumes of essays are divided into seven parts. The first volume focuses essentially on subjects relating to International Law & is divided into three sections. Part one of the first volume encompasses Topics in International Law such as Some New Thoughts on the Codification of International Law by His Excellency Judge Roberto Ago; Evidence in the Procedure of the International Court of Justice: The Role of the Court by His Excellency Jugde Manfred Lachs; The Validity of International Law: an Empirical Experiment by Professor Georg Schwarzenberger, with a particularly engaging & incisive Introduction to the two volumes of Essays by Professor Ian Brownlie, Q.C. Human Rights subjects still hold the pride of place in the thinking of many legal experts & scholars which is clearly reflected here. The title of the second volume is African Law & Comparative Public Law. Part five of the essays contains topics of interest in African Legal system which took its roots from the British Common Law System. Constitutional Law is bloadly covered in part six which forms a section of its own in volume two. Quite apart from the variety of topics covered in this festschrift, the quality of the contributors to it, makes the whole exercise a necessary part of an important collection of any law library in the world. The framework of the essays suggest that they are designed to overlap in the well-tested & established field of law & those branches of law dealing with contemporary issues which lawyers, diplomats, political scientists, politicians & research scholars are familiar with. The richness of the festschrift is matched only by the mutually reinforcing manner in which the presentation was made. The essays fully demonstrate the depth of knowledge of the eminent professors & specialists wh

Book Myxomatosis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Bartrip
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2008-07-30
  • ISBN : 085771502X
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Myxomatosis written by Peter Bartrip and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myxomatosis, a viral disease of European wild rabbits, was discovered in South America in the 1890s. It was deliberately introduced in Australia and France in the 1950s and reached Britain in 1953. Within a year it had killed tens of millions of rabbits from Kent to the Shetlands. The British reaction to myxomatosis was mixed; members of the public reared on the tales of Beatrix Potter were appalled. With meat still rationed, consumers deplored the loss of a cheap and nutritious foodstuff. Many farmers, on the other hand, welcomed the rabbit's demise as a serious agricultural pest and actively spread the disease. However some lost their livelyhood through the spread of Myxomatosis, such as rough shooters who regretted the loss of prey and hatters and furriers who mourned the unavailability of the fur on which they depended. Rabbits also had champions within the 'establishment'; including Winston Churchill and the Archbishop of York, who both regarded myxomatosis as an abomination. Winston Churchill was personally influential in making its deliberate transmission a criminal offence. Even the farmers and foresters who applauded the rabbit's demise often had qualms about a disease that inflicted such a horrible death. Myxomatosis presented the authorities with difficult questions: should they try to contain the disease, encourage it, or do nothing? Should they take advantage of rabbit depopulation and try to exterminate the animal? Britain's myxomatosis outbreak has hitherto attracted little historical attention, notwithstanding parallels with other recent animal disease crises. In the first book dedicated to this subject, Peter Bartrip examines how the disease reached Britain. He argues it was not the government who was reesponsible, as many thought at the time, but instead identifies the individual who may have deliberatlely brought myxomatosis over from France. Bartrip tracks the spread of the virus throughout the country and considers the response of government and other bodies and the impact of rabbit de-population on agriculture and the natural environment. The cultural significance of myxomatosis in Britain raises topical and controversial issues relating to veterinary medicine, animal rights, the interface between human and animal health, the ethics of pest control by biological means and the politics of environmental meddling. These are important considerations if we are to learn lessons from more recent animal disease crises such as foot and mouth, BSE and H5N1 avian influenza.

Book Soviet Economic Management Under Khrushchev

Download or read book Soviet Economic Management Under Khrushchev written by Nataliya Kibita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sovnarkhoz Reform of 1957 was designed by Khrushchev to improve efficiency in the Soviet economic system by decentralising economic decision making from all-Union branch ministries in Moscow to the governments of the individual republics and regional economic councils. Based on extensive original research, including unpublished archival material, this book examines the reform, discussing the motivations for it, which included Khrushchev's attempt to strengthen his own power base. The book explores how the process of reform was implemented, especially its impact on the republics, and analyses why the reform, which was reversed in 1959, failed. Overall, the book reveals a great deal about the workings, and the shortcomings, of the Soviet economic system at its height.
