Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how experienced authors repeat word forms in three different genres: research articles, short stories and political speeches. Methods from corpus linguistics are used to elicit all the repeated word forms in each text and then the material is analysed to establish the nature of the repetitions. The analysis seeks answers to the questions: in what naming complexes are the words repeated; is the same concept evoked; is the referential type repeated; are there metaphoric, pragmatic or other shifts in the meaning of the word? Taxonomy of repetition types is evolved which leads to conclusions about the role of repetition in creating coherent texts. The book provides evidence that repetitions amount to about 60% of the words in a text and they form groups of chains typical for each genre. Thus the way words are repeated serves to create the skeleton of a genre. Comparisons show that in texts written by inexperienced authors the repetitions are considerably fewer than in the work of the experienced ones. The study also reveals which types of repetition decrease the quality of the text. Specific applications of the theory are suggested for assessing the quality of a text, creating short summaries and building good texts in the respective genres. The study is placed within the framework of discourse studies of lexical repetitions and presents a brief non-technical description of the linguistic field. Inasmuch as the issue of how words relate to objects in reality is one of the criteria for assessing the repetitions, an overview is given and the analysis elicits specific reference types.

Book excerpt: The present volume presents objective methods to detect and analyse various forms of repetitions. Repetition of textual elements is more than a superficial phenomenon. It may even be considered as constitutive for units and relations in a text: on a primary level when no other way exists to establish a unit – as in a musical composition (a motif can be recognised as such only after at least one repetition) – and on a secondary, artistic level, where repetition is a consequence of the transfer of the equivalence principle from the paradigmatic axis to the syntagmatic one as showed by R. Jakobson. The analysis of repetitive elements and structures in texts with objective mathematical means can serve several practical and theoretical purposes, among them: Characterisation of texts by means of parameters (measures, indicators) as taken from established mathematical statistics or specifically constructed ones in individual cases. Comparison of texts on the basis of their quantitative characteristics and classification of the texts by the results. Research for the laws of text, which control the mechanisms connected to text creation. As a remote aim, the construction of a theory of text consisting of a system of text laws. The final attempt of every possible quantitative text analysis is the construction of a text theory. The book illustrates this on examples of such laws and corresponding empirical tests.

In the ancient world from which those texts originate, however, literacy was confined to only a small number of educated scribes. And, as recent research has shown, even the literate scribes learned texts by repeated recitation, while the nonliterate ordinary people had little if any direct contact with written scrolls. The texts that had taken distinctive form, moreover, were embedded in a broader and deeper cultural repertoire cultivated orally in village communities as well as in scribal circles. Only recently have some scholars struggled to appreciate texts that later became ""biblical"" in their own historical context of oral communication. Exploration of texts in oral performance--whether as scribal teachers' instruction to their protŽgŽs or as prophetic speeches of Jesus of Nazareth or as the performance of a whole Gospel story in a community of Jesus-loyalists--requires interpreters to relinquish their print-cultural assumptions. Widening exploration of texts in oral performance in other fields offers exciting new possibilities for allowing those texts to come alive again in their community contexts as they resonated with the cultural tradition in which they were embedded."

Whether this book, which is neither the first nor the last research on space in Turkish, is of high quality will be determined over time; however, it can be said with humility and ease of mind that it is a modest start in its field. A research book should be original, and the researcher should discover something others have yet to say (Eco, 2018). From a dialectical perspective, every scientific research must benefit from previously drawn roadmaps. This book frequently refers to previous roadmaps to gain a broad perspective, deep conceptual framework, and consistent methodology required to achieve original research quality and contribute to the field in the analysis of spatial language in Turkish. Space is a semantic concept that includes the locations and motions of entities in space and the human being as an observer. Spatial language, the study area of spatial semantics, contains spatial expressions, which are the conventional specifications of the location or translocation of a particular entity. Metaphors or conversational implicatures do not count as spatial expressions. Spatial frames of reference, deixis, topology, toponymy, motion and lexia concepts are at the centre of spatial expressions based on figure and ground relations. In many Turkish sources that use prescriptive grammar methods, the place given to the subject of space is limited. The number of linguistic studies on spatial language in Turkish is also low. This book aims to explain the stages, levels, and tools used to code spatial knowledge as a linguistic category in Turkish. For this purpose, the bracketing method listed and analysed spatial expressions. It has been determined that the elements that become “location” in the static spatial relationship are usually formed with /+DA/, /+DAki/, and /+ki/ morphemes. The elements that become “goal”, “source”, and “route” in a dynamic spatial relationship are usually formed with /+A/, /+DAn/ and /+I/ morphemes.The noun phrase-based ground coding strategy is dominant in Turkish. The spatial relationship is established with the case category and word types (spatial nominals, postpositions, adverbs, and verbs), word groups (noun phrases and adjective phrases), and spatial texts larger than sentences. Spatial nominals can be phrased with case suffixes, possessive suffixes, and postpositions. Spatial information is not only from words, phrases or sentences but more intensively and accurately extracted from spatial lexias. For this reason, in linguistic studies on spatial language, attention should be paid to the pragmatic context of communication and the text-linguistic references in utterances. This book was produced from a part of the doctoral dissertation titled “Spatial Language in Yaşar Kemal’s The Wind from the Plain Trilogy”, prepared in 2023 at Uşak University, Graduate Education Institute, Modern Turkish Language Branch.
