Llamo sintaxis tradicional al conjunto de pautas y costumbres que se han impuesto en las aulas de Secundaria, a partir de los contenidos de los libros de texto, durante el último medio siglo. Este libro intenta poner un poco de orden en ese desbarajuste, aplicando un análisis sistemático.¿Por qué aparecen unos cuadros con marcos sencillos y otros con marcos dobles?Los de marcos sencillos ofrecen clasificaciones; los de cuadros dobles abordan asuntos complejos y están destinados a los profesores más que a los alumnos.Tiene sentido este libro, ahora que las Academias han publicado su Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española?La Nueva Gramática de la lengua española es una obra que se comenzó a publicar en 2009, pero todavía no se enseña en las aulas. No me cabe duda de que se aplicará en el futuro, pero hasta que ese día llegue, es mejor trabajar bien, y este libro puede ayudarte a hacerlo. Escribo estas líneas en el verano de 2019: en este momento, solo en Murcia y en Aragón se exige que los exámenes de Selectividad de los alumnos sigan la Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española.¿Quién eres tú para darme a mí consejos?Un profesor de Secundaria que lleva dando clase, ininterrumpidamente, desde 1991 y ha conseguido sobrevivir a la burocracia, a las reformas educativas, a los padres, a los alumnos, a los compañeros y a los equipos directivos durante más de un cuarto de siglo.¿Otro libro tuyo? ¿No te cansas? ¿Qué tiene este de nuevo?Empecé escribiendo Sintaxis para alérgicos a la sintaxis. Después intenté mejorarlo con Sintaxis, de 0 a 100 en 99. Más tarde creí dar por cerrado el asunto de la gramática tradicional con la serie 2017, que incluía un Curso completo, un Manual y unos Ejercicios. No contento con ello, creé un canal de Youtube para difundir un modo particular de trabajo que resulta eficiente. Todo este material ha conocido una extraordinaria difusión y ha gozado de un incuestionable éxito. Este es el último libro que escribo sobre sintaxis tradicional. Lo hago para culminar todo este trabajo con una obra que me satisfaga lo más posible. Para ello, he intentado corregir los errores de los libros anteriores y añadir lo que he ido aprendiendo en este tiempo: cambio mi concepto de reflexividad, amplío mucho los complementos oracionales, explico conceptos como la oposición enunciado-enunciación, elimino la pregunta para buscar el complemento indirecto... No quería cerrar esta obra de años dejando atrás explicaciones que en su día consideré útiles y ahora me parecen mejorables.¿Por qué tu libro y no otro?Seguro que existen manuales muy buenos. Yo creo que este te puede ser útil porque la experiencia de mis otros libros de sintaxis, morfología, comentario de texto y literatura ha sido excelente. Empezamos con un grupo de Facebook formado por unas decenas de personas y ahora somos más de nueve mil; mis libros se utilizan en academias y se citan en las oposiciones; muchos profesores y alumnos se han convencido con ellos de que la sintaxis no es imposible ni desagradable.

Both languages share a common history—e.g., the personal union of Philipp II of Spain and Philipp I of Portugal; the parallel colonization of the Americas by Portugal and Spain; the long-term transformation from a feudal to a democratic system—in which crucial moments in the diachrony of address took place. To give one example, empirical data show that the puzzling late spread of Sp. usted ‘you (formal, polite)’ and Pt. você ‘you’ across America can be explained for both languages by the role of the political and military colonial administration. To explore these new insights, the volume relies on an innovative methodology, as it links traditional downstream diachrony with upstream diachronic reconstruction based on synchronic variation. Including theoretical reflections as well as fine-grained empirical studies, it brings together the most relevant authors in the field.

Book excerpt: This book is the first complete study of the translations of Machiavelli’s Prince made in Europe and the Mediterranean countries during the period from the sixteenth to the first half of the nineteenth century: the first, unpublished French translation by Jacques de Vintimille (1546), the first Latin translation by Silvestro Tegli (1560), as well as the first translations in Dutch (1615), German (1692), Swedish (1757) and Arabic (1824). The first translation produced in Spain - dated somewhere between the end of the sixteenth and the early seventeenth century - remained in manuscript form, while there was a second vernacular Spanish version around 1680. The situation in Great Britain was different from the rest of Europe, as it could boast four manuscript translations by the end of the sixteenth century.
