Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of sustainability is already applied in all industrial sectors. The fight against climate change therefore forces us to look for alternatives in the way we move. Different alternative fuels are discussed in this book: from liquid and gaseous biofuels to electricity. Moreover, waste to fuel processes are another option to produce a significant amount of fuels. In the spirit of this book, there is not only collecting different alternatives, but creativity is also promoted in the readers of this book, so that they take an active part of the solution necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Book Sustainable Mobility

Download or read book Sustainable Mobility written by Raphael Edinger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-03-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With energy consumption rising and with it our dependence on crude oil from politically uncertain regions, and faced with the threat to the environment from polluting emissions, it is becoming ever more evident that fuels from renewable resources are an increasingly attractive option to fossil fuels. Edinger and Kaul, like a growing number of other experts, hold the mobility of populations—transportation, in other words—responsposible for the rise in the rate of greenhouse gas emissions, a condition that can only get worse as less developed regions of the world emerge with their own needs and demands for mobility. What to do? Edinger and Kaul outline in sharp detail the shortcomings of current vehicular technologies and dominant fossil fuels. They present a careful, authoritative examination of innovative technologies that in their opinion have the best chance of combating dangerous reliance on conventional means of power, not only for transportation but other purposes as well. And they focus on special forms of fuel cell drive systems, with their high efficiencies and reduced consumptions, and on other emerging renewable technologies and their innovative, sustainable power sources—such as fuels from biomass and renewable electricity, a particularly promising source of energy for newly growing economies. Wide ranging in coverage, forthright in style, the book is an important review of how things are today, why they could get worse, but perhaps most importantly, what we can do about it.

Book Alternative Fuels and Sustainable Mobility

Download or read book Alternative Fuels and Sustainable Mobility written by Karl G. Hoyer and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper compares 16 alternative energy chains in a Well-to-Wheel analysis including three indicators: energy use, emissions of climate gases and emissions of local/regional pollutants. The analysis includes a private car which uses natural gas, biological fuels, electricity and hydrogen, respectively. The analysis shows that an alternative which scores favourably on one indicator often scores unfavourably on other indicators. Sustainable mobility, however, requires favourable scores on all the indicators. Thus, sustainable mobility must combine three different approaches: the efficiency approach -- which includes the use of alternative energy -- the substitution approach and the reduction approach.

Book Sustainable Automobile Transport

Download or read book Sustainable Automobile Transport written by L. Ryan and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport, and in particular road transport, represents a significant global threat to long-term sustainable development, and is one of the fastest-growing consumers of final energy and sources of greenhouse gas emissions. In this book, long-term energy economy environment scenarios are used to identify the key technological developments required to address the challenges passenger car transport poses to climate change mitigation and energy security. It also considers possible targets for policy support and examines some of the elements that contribute to the significant levels of uncertainty particularly social and political conditions. The book then builds on this long-term scenario analysis with a broad review of recent empirical examples of relevant policy implementation to identify near-term options for the passenger transportation sector, which may promote a shift towards a more sustainable transport system over the longer term. Sustainable Automobile Transport will be of particular interest to those in the policy process who are striving to address the automobile-derived challenges associated with climate change a growing rather than declining problem. It will have a worldwide audience as every developed and rapidly growing society struggles to address the dynamic growth in greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles.

Book Transport Energy and CO2

Download or read book Transport Energy and CO2 written by International Energy Agency and published by OECD. This book was released on 2009 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Car ownership is set to triple by 2050, trucking activity will double and air travel could increase fourfold. This book examines how to enable mobility without accelerating climate change. it finds that if changes are made to the way people travel, adoption of technologies to improve vehicle efficiency and a shift to low-CO2 fuels, it is possible to move onto a different pathway where transport CO2 emissions by 2050 are far below current levels, at costs that are lower than many assume. the report discusses the prospects for shifting more travel to the most efficient modes and reducing travel growth rates, improving vehicle fuel efficiency by up to 50% using cost-effective, incremental technologies, and moving toward electricity, hydrogen, and advanced biofuels to achieve a more secure and sustainable transport future. If governments implement strong policies to achieve this scenario, transport can play its role and dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by 2050.
