Book excerpt: For centuries the sub-national languages of China have been a fundamental feature in daily life and popular culture, while a standardized form of Mandarin has been adopted as the language of the state (including education). Suppressed during powerful movements to establish a modern, national culture, these local languages or dialects have nevertheless survived, and their resurgence in the media and literature has caused tensions to surface. Concerns for education, law, and commerce have all promoted a standard national language, yet, at the same time, as local societies have undergone massive transformations, the need to re-imagine communities has repeatedly challenged the adequacy of a single language to represent them. Moreover, local languages have been presented in dramatically different and conflicted roles--as symbols of the failure to assimilate to a cultural mainstream (which in turn may be parodied as contingent and inadequate) or asserting the identity of a community as a site of its own cultural production and not merely as a venue for transmitting a national culture. Acknowledging local language as authentic may also reveal cultural hegemonies within regions and contested versions of communities. This ground-breaking study surveys in detail the sweep of local languages in television, radio, film, and print culture of late twentieth-century mainland China, especially Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Chengdu, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Focusing on these regions, the analysis contrasts and compares these distinct communities to each other and to the ways in which they mediate culture as a national institution. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 10th Eurographics Workshop on Rendering, which took place from the 21st to the 23rd of June, 1999, in Granada, Spain. Origi nally an outgrowth of the annual Eurographics meeting, the workshop was organized by a dedicated group of researchers who felt there was insufficient opportunity at Eu rographics and Siggraph to exchange ideas specifically on rendering. Over the past 9 years, the workshop has become renown as an international watershed for top quality work in this field, attracting between 50 and 100 attendees each year to share their latest research. This year we received a total of 63 submissions. Each paper was carefully reviewed by two of the 25 international programme committee members, as well as two external reviewers, selected by the co-chairs from a pool of 71 individuals. (The programme committee and external reviewers are listed following the contents pages.) In this new review process, all submissions and reviews were handled electronically, with the ex ception of videos submitted with a few of the papers. This streamlined the review process considerably, while reducing the costs and confusion associated with courier delivery of hundreds of papers.

The response to BSE as a disease threatening human health is considered in volume 6 of the report, 'Human health 1989-96'. The division into two topics has been done in order to make the story easier to follow. It is, however, arbitrary and to a degree artificial, in that the best way to protect humans from any risk that there might be of transmission of BSE was to eradicate the disease in cattle. The ruminant feed ban (RFB) and the animal Specified Bovine Offal (SBO) ban, which are focussed on in this document, were primarily animal health measures which had important implications for human health. The slaughter and compensation scheme, which was primarily introduced to take diseased animals out of the human food chain, is covered in volume 6.The ruminant content of meat and bone meal (MBM) incorporated in cattle feed had been identified as the source of infection of BSE. The ruminant feed ban aimed to prevent any of this material from being incorporated in ruminant feed. The animal Specified Bovine Offal (SBO) ban, introduced in September 1990 was not designed to protect ruminant animals but to protect non-ruminant animals, whose diet included ruminant protein. The ban was intended to divert at source the SBOs, when severed from the carcass, keeping them separate from material destined for animal feed, and ensuring that they were disposed of as waste.It was not until 1994 that it became clear to MAFF officials that neither the RFB nor the SBO ban was fully effective. Chapter 2 considers the steps taken to implement, enforce and monitor the RFB. Implementation was the responsibility of those who supplied or used ruminant feed. Enforcement was the responsibility of the local authorities but Trading Standards Officers were powerless to enforce the ban as there was no reliable test that could demonstrate, to a high standard of proof, that feed contained ruminant protein.The introduction of the SBO ban is considered in chapter 3. This was initially introduced by the majority of the feed trade on a voluntary basis. The attitude of MAFF officials and Ministers, at this stage, was that the ban was neither necessary nor desirable. A statutory ban was later introduced in haste and without consultation.The working of the SBO ban is covered in chapters 4a and 4b: 4a is a narrative of events relevant to the implementation, monitoring and enforcement of the animal SBO ban, 4b contains a detailed discussion of the adequacy of these measures. Deficiencies in the legislative scheme are examined in some length as they had serious consequences. The adequacy of the steps taken by MAFF officials to make the ban work and remedy its defects is also examined.Cattle tracking is dealt with in chapter 5. The Agriculture Select Committee recommended in 1990 that MAFF should set up a computerised animal tracing system. The response that the cost of such a system was not justified by the benefits is considered.Breeding and artificial insemination are covered in chapter 6.

Though the wider context of rendering begins with shading and texturing objects and lighting your scene, the rendering process ends when surfaces, materials, lights, and motion are processed into a final image or image sequence. Visualization vs. the final render As you build scenes (shade and texture objects, light scenes, position cameras, and so on), you’ll want to visualize them many times before producing the final rendered image or image sequence. This process may involve (depending on your particular project) creating and setting up additional cameras. See Create a camera and Adjust a camera and its attributes. Visualize a scene during early iterations to detect and correct image quality problems or to estimate and reduce the amount of time the final render takes before you spend time performing the final render. You can visualize your scene in the viewport, interactively render with the Maya software renderer using IPR; or, if you are using the Arnold for Maya renderer, interactively render in the Arnold RenderView. You can render a single frame or a sequence of multiple frames; that is, an animation or part of an animation interactively from within Maya. Alternatively, you can batch render or command line render one or more frames. Before you start your final render, be sure to select a renderer, and set the file name, format, and resolution of your rendered images in the Render Settings window.

Each paper was carefully reviewed by two of the 28 international programme committee members, as well as external reviewers, selected by the co-chairs from a pool of 125 individuals. In this review process, all submissions and reviews were handled electronically, with the exception of videos submitted with a few of the papers. The overall quality of the submissions was exceptionally high. Space and time constraints forced the committee to make some difficult decisions. In the end, 29 by papers were accepted, and they appear here. Almost all papers are accompanied color images, which appear at the end of the book. The papers treat the following varied topics: methods for local and global illumination, techniques for acquisition and modeling from images, image-based rendering, new image representations, hardware assisted methods, shadow algorithms, visibility, perception, texturing, and filtering. Each year, in addition to the reviewed contributions, the workshop includes invited presentations from internationally recognized experts.
