Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kidney disease affects approximately ten percent of the population worldwide, with more than 2.6 million individuals estimated to be receiving renal replacement therapy. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is fast becoming a major public health issue, with increasing incidence and death rates throughout the world. Many strategies have been proposed to reduce the growing burden of kidney disease; but while early identification and improved access to renal replacement therapies and transplantation are important, they are unlikely to solve this enormous problem. Efforts focused on primary prevention, protection, and slowing the progression of kidney disease are needed as well. Renal protection is a vital and critical component of protecting the kidneys, promoting recovery, and preventing further renal loss, yet observational data suggests that awareness of renal protection remains low and the concept of renal protection under-recognized.. Kidney Protection: A Practical Guide to Preserving Renal Function in Acute and Chronic Disease is a clinically focused review that aims to address this awareness and knowledge gap. It assembles clinically pertinent information in a concise and lucid format with the goal of helping the clinician protect the kidneys, whether in the ICU, perioperative, or out-patient setting. The authors' interdisciplinary approach is inclusive of nephrology, urology, critical care, anesthesia, and emergency medicine. Chapters review understanding kidney disease, general concepts in protecting renal function, patient selection, assessment, pharmacologic issues, and kidney protection in systemic illness. The latest evidence-based practical guidelines for optimal renal outcomes are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 10 years, there have been many international meetings on the storage of organs prior to transplantation, and several have led to the publication of proceedings; there have also been a number of other books on this subject-. Most of these publications have concentrated on practical clinical aspects of organ preservation and on empirical animal experiments directed towards well-defined clinical objectives. Progress was rapid at first, but it is now generally agreed that there has been little improvement in techniques during the past 5 years, although understanding has certainly increased. In 1980 the Tissue Preservation and Banking Committee of the Transplantation Society decided that a fresh approach to the problem of improving preservation methods was needed: it was decided to hold a conference at which an opportunity would be provided to return to basic principles and to examine some of the advances that have occurred in recent yelns in areas of physiology that might be important for further improvements in preservation. The conference was held in Cambridge, UK, in April 1981 and this book is based upon the papers presented to that meeting and the work of a small discussion group that met after the main meeting. The book starts with six basic review chapters, followed by sections on the effects of ischaemia and anoxia, and on biochemical and pharmacological aspects of hypothermia. Chapters dealing with organ preservation by initial perfusion followed by hypothermia, and by continuous hypothermic perfusion, follow.

Book Kidney Transplantation Bioengineering and Regeneration

Download or read book Kidney Transplantation Bioengineering and Regeneration written by Giuseppe Orlando and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 1253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kidney Transplantation, Bioengineering, and Regeneration: Kidney Transplantation in the Regenerative Medicine Era investigates how the field of regenerative medicine is changing the traditional premises of solid organ transplantation, specifically within the field of kidney transplantation. In Section 1, chapters illustrate the state of the art in kidney transplantation as well as the research behind the bioengineering and regeneration of kidney organoids for therapeutic renal replacement. In Section II, chapters catalog the technologies that are being developed and the methods that are being implemented to bioengineer or regenerate kidneys in order to restore function, while critically highlighting those technological advances which hold the most promise. The book thus encompasses clinical renal transplantation, tissue engineering, biomaterial sciences, stem cell biology, and developmental biology, as they are all applied to the kidney. Focuses on the synergy between renal organ transplantation and regenerative medicine, highlighting the advances within transplantation, bioengineering, regeneration, and repair Educates the transplant community on important regenerative medicine research pertinent to kidney transplantation Develops a shared language for clinicians, surgeons, and basic researchers to reach across the fields of transplantation and regenerative medicine, and facilitate more productive investigation and research Catalogs the technologies being developed and methods being implemented to bioengineer or regenerate kidneys to restore function

Download or read book 8 Day Kidney Preservation written by Geoffrey Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a system that was developed between 1975 and 1979 that for the first time succeeded in the preservation of kidneys in vitro for up to 8 days. The system used hypothermic perfusion with a Human Albumin (Plasma Protein Fraction) based perfusate. The study was presented to the University of Liverpool in 1983 as a thesis for the degree of ChM. This book includes the original text and the experimental logs for the study. Both glomerular and tubular injury occurred during storage and this progressed after re-implantation in non viable kidneys. Later work suggested that the concentration of Octanoic Acid in the Plasma Protein Fraction was the most important variable in this experimental system. Bottles of two versions of Plasma Protein Fraction are shown on the first page; the bottle on the left containing 3.6 mmol/l of Octanoic Acid is an example of the batches that were used to make the perfusate for successful 8 day preservation. The bottle on the right is from later production and contains 7.2 mmol/l of Octanoic Acid; no successful preservation beyond 5 days was achieved when this was used to make the perfusate. The success of long duration storage made it possible to show that measurement of the lysosomal enzyme NAG (N-Acetyl-glucosaminidase) in the perfusate could not be used to predict whether stored kidneys that had not been warm injured would function immediately. However, it was shown that perfusate NAG levels might be used to assess the severity of any warm injury.
