Book Renaissance Papers 2022

Download or read book Renaissance Papers 2022 written by Jim Pearce and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance Papers collects the best scholarly essays submitted each year to the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. The theme of this year's volume is "sacred places, secular spaces." It begins with a "who is it" mystery, examining two portraits by Raphael that embody the sacred and the profane, respectively. The next essay engages both the sacred and pictorial innovationsin Holbein's predella The Dead Christ; while the following one views the sacred through the critical lens of race, arguing that Northern European churchmen normalized views on race by strategically placing racialized artifacts in their churches. The scene then shifts to 16th century Venice, where the Greek community contended with local authorities over the right to establish a sacred site for interring their dead. The next two essays swing the pendulum toward the secular: an essay on ecocriticism suggests that the early modern period expelled the sacred from nature and presents a Rabelaisian antidote, while an essay on Spenser's The Faerie Queene presents it as a blueprint for colonization. The volume concludes with Contributors: Julie Fox-Horton, Lorenz A. Hindrichsen, Heather Hirschfeld, Elizabeth Lisot-Nelson, Jesse Russell, Victor Velázquez, John N. Book excerpt: Features the best scholarly essays from the 2013 Southeastern Renaissance Conference held at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, including essays on Renaissance poetics, friendship, and representations of women. Renaissance Papers collects the best scholarly essays submitted each year to the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. The 2013 volume features essays from the conference held at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The volume opens with three reappraisals of Renaissance poetics. The first essay addresses the incarnational poetics in George Herbert's poetry; the second investigates the poetics of probability in Middleton's A Yorkshire Tragedy; and the third considers an image from Colluthus's Rape of Helen, proposing new ways to understand allusion in Marlowe's Hero and Leander. The volume then turns to Renaissance representations of women with a discussion of "swooning" in George Gascoigne's The Adventures of Master F.J.; a discussion of prostitution, performance, and the art of Anti-Sprezzatura; and a discussion of identity, loss, and narration in The Rapeof Lucrece. The center of the volume turns to an examination of friendship and the paratextual apparatus of Michel de Montaigne's Essais, and then shifts to Shakespearean drama with essays on The Comedy of Errors, Measure for Measure, and Cymbeline. The volume closes with an essay on John Milton's historical iconoclasm in his History of Britain. Contributors: John Wall, Kevin Chovanec, Pamela Macfie, Margaret Simon, Mara Amster, Ruth Stevenson, Andrew Keener, Christopher Crosbie, Ward Risvold, Patricia Wareh, and Paul Stapleton. Book Islamic Science and the Making of the European Renaissance

Download or read book Islamic Science and the Making of the European Renaissance written by George Saliba and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-01-21 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise and fall of the Islamic scientific tradition, and the relationship of Islamic science to European science during the Renaissance. The Islamic scientific tradition has been described many times in accounts of Islamic civilization and general histories of science, with most authors tracing its beginnings to the appropriation of ideas from other ancient civilizations—the Greeks in particular. In this thought-provoking and original book, George Saliba argues that, contrary to the generally accepted view, the foundations of Islamic scientific thought were laid well before Greek sources were formally translated into Arabic in the ninth century. Drawing on an account by the tenth-century intellectual historian Ibn al-Naidm that is ignored by most modern scholars, Saliba suggests that early translations from mainly Persian and Greek sources outlining elementary scientific ideas for the use of government departments were the impetus for the development of the Islamic scientific tradition. He argues further that there was an organic relationship between the Islamic scientific thought that developed in the later centuries and the science that came into being in Europe during the Renaissance. Saliba outlines the conventional accounts of Islamic science, then discusses their shortcomings and proposes an alternate narrative. Using astronomy as a template for tracing the progress of science in Islamic civilization, Saliba demonstrates the originality of Islamic scientific thought. He details the innovations (including new mathematical tools) made by the Islamic astronomers from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, and offers evidence that Copernicus could have known of and drawn on their work. Rather than viewing the rise and fall of Islamic science from the often-narrated perspectives of politics and religion, Saliba focuses on the scientific production itself and the complex social, economic, and intellectual conditions that made it possible.

Download or read book Pretty Creatures written by Michael Witmore and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children had surprisingly central roles in many of the public performances of the English Renaissance, whether in entertainments—civic pageants, children's theaters, Shakespearean drama—or in more grim religious and legal settings, as when children were "possessed by demons" or testified as witnesses in witchcraft trials. Taken together, such spectacles made repeated connections between child performers as children and the mimetic powers of fiction in general. In Pretty Creatures, Michael Witmore examines the ways in which children, with their proverbial capacity for spontaneous imitation and their imaginative absorption, came to exemplify the virtues and powers of fiction during this era. As much concerned with Renaissance poetics as with children's roles in public spectacles of the period, Pretty Creatures attempts to bring the antics of children—and the rich commentary these antics provoked—into the mainstream of Renaissance studies, performance studies, and studies of reformation culture in England. As such, it represents an alternative history of the concept of mimesis in the period, one that is built from the ground up through reflections on the actual performances of what was arguably nature's greatest mimic: the child.
