Book The State Removal and Indigenous Peoples in the United States and Mexico 1620 2000

Download or read book The State Removal and Indigenous Peoples in the United States and Mexico 1620 2000 written by Claudia Haake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-11-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the forced migration of the Delawares in the United States and the Yaquis in Mexico, focusing primarily on the impact removal from tribal lands had on the (ethnic) identity of these two indigenous societies. It analyzes Native responses to colonial and state policies to determine the practical options that each group had in dealing with the states in which they lived. Haake convincingly argues that both nation-states aimed at the destruction of the Native American societies within their borders. This exemplary comparative, transnational study clearly demonstrates that the legacy of these attitudes and policies are readily apparent in both countries today. This book should appeal to a wide variety of academic disciplines in which diversity and minority political representation assume significance.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. ‘Anthropocosmic Theater is a name which covers a deep theatrical proposition which gives back to dramatic space its participatory capacity. The research, design and production of participatory theatre offers the spectator a cultural dynamic which, with five minutes of instruction, trains him and sustains him so that he can have his own experience because at this stage of evolution we cannot ignore the fact that the vitality and internal spell of any artist manifestation is no longer the heritage of any particular group or clan, but rests beneath the skin of any human being. The participatory dynamics contained in this book are the fruit of fifteen years wok at the UNAM's Taller de Investigacion Teatral’- Nicolas Nunez. This text traces Nunez's research with Grotowski and Strasberg, at the Old Vic in London and in Nahuatlan and Tibetan theatre, to arrive at his design for a unique participatory theatre form. Book Routledge Handbook on Human Rights and the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Human Rights and the Middle East and North Africa written by Anthony Tirado Chase and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events such as ‘Iran’s Green Revolution’ and the ‘Arab Uprisings’ have exploded notions that human rights are irrelevant to Middle Eastern and North African politics. Increasingly seen as a global concern, human rights are at the fulcrum of the region’s on-the-ground politics, transnational intellectual debates, and global political intersections. The Routledge Handbook on Human Rights and the Middle East and North Africa: emphasises the need to consider human rights in all their dimensions, rather than solely focusing on the political dimension, in order to understand the structural reasons behind the persistence of human rights violations; explores the various frameworks in which to consider human rights—conceptual, political and transnational/international; discusses issue areas subject to particularly intense debate—gender, religion, sexuality, transitions and accountability; contains contributions from perspectives that span from global theory to grassroots reflections, emphasising the need for academic work on human rights to seriously engage with the thoughts and practices of those working on the ground. A multidisciplinary approach from scholars with a wide range of expertise allows the book to capture the complex dynamics by which human rights have had, or could have, an impact on Middle Eastern and North African politics. This book will therefore be a key resource for students and scholars of Middle Eastern and North African politics and society, as well as anyone with a concern for Human Rights across the globe.

Book City Economics

  • Author : Brendan O'Flaherty
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2005-10-30
  • ISBN : 0674252071
  • Pages : 602 pages

Download or read book City Economics written by Brendan O'Flaherty and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-30 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory but innovative textbook on the economics of cities is aimed at students of urban and regional policy as well as of undergraduate economics. It deals with standard topics, including automobiles, mass transit, pollution, housing, and education but it also discusses non-standard topics such as segregation, water supply, sewers, garbage, fire prevention, housing codes, homelessness, crime, illicit drugs, and economic development. Its methods of analysis are primarily verbal, geometric, and arithmetic. The author achieves coherence by showing how the analysis of various topics reinforces one another. Thus, buses can tell us something about schools and optimal tolls about land prices. Brendan O'Flaherty looks at almost everything through the lens of Pareto optimality and potential Pareto optimality--how policies affect people and their well-being, not abstract entities such as cities or the economy or growth or the environment. Such traditionalism leads to radical questions, however: Should cities have police and fire departments? Should tax preferences for home ownership be repealed? Should public schools charge for their services? O'Flaherty also gives serious consideration to such heterodox policies as pay-at-the-pump auto insurance, curb rights for buses, land taxes, marginal cost water pricing, and sidewalk zoning.

Book People s Republic of China

Download or read book People s Republic of China written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-02-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following an impressive recovery from the initial impact of the pandemic, China’s growth has slowed significantly in 2022. It remains under pressure as more transmissible variants have led to recurring outbreaks that have dampened mobility, the real estate crisis remains unresolved, and global demand has slowed. Macroeconomic policies have been eased appropriately, but their effectiveness has been diminished by a focus on enterprises and increasingly less effective traditional infrastructure investment rather than support to households. The pandemic and its impacts have also been a setback to economic rebalancing toward private consumption and to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A slowdown in growth-enhancing reforms against the backdrop of increasing geoeconomic fragmentation pressures stand in the way of a much-needed lift to productivity growth, weighing on China’s medium-term growth potential.
