Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Life: A Private's Reminiscences of the Civil War The story of "The War" has been often told, but such were the magnitude and immense extent of the operations that every successive account of it adds much of interest that had been left untold. But while this book is no exception to the rule just stated, it has one peculiarity not found in any of its predecessors. Hitherto the story has been told only by officers, or parties not actually engaged in the military operations, but, so far as I know, this work of Mr. Gerrish is the first from the standpoint of a private. Considering the vast number represented by the author, it is quite remarkable that, within the twenty-one years since the war began, no one has, heretofore, attempted to tell the experiences, sufferings, and noble exploits of the men who enabled their officers to gain an undying fame, and whose patient endurance, unwavering patriotism, and unsurpassed heroism, saved the union of the States, demonstrated that the United States is a Nation, and not a mere Confederation, and rescued from its sorest peril the Republican form of government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Life: A Private's Reminiscences of the Civil War Many volumes have been published in regard to the late Civil War in America. By these the nation is made familiar with the movements of our armies, and the results of those great military campaigns. These volumes have been written by civilians and officers of high rank, and consequently the story of the private soldier's life has never been told. That life was made up of events and surrounded by circum stances of the most interesting character. Not interesting to the soldier alone, but of interest to his friends, and all who enjoy the fruits of victory purchased by his sacrifices and patriotism. It was to supply, to a limited extent, this want so universally felt that the writer consented to furnish The Sketches of Army Life for the Republican Journal, of Belfast, Maine. The officers had spoken, but this was a voice from the ranks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. THE CAMP AT NEWBERN. THE time that intervened between our return from Trenton and the active operations which began about the middle of March was the most quiet period of our service, and it seems the most appropriate interval to devote to such descriptive incidents and circumstances as may best set forth the experiences of the citizen soldier in the camp. Camp Rogers was a square of not less than eight hundred feet on each of its sides, --about as large as the enclosure between Broadway and Walnut, Fourth and Fifth Streets. Its symmetry, however, was slightly broken at the angle where it was bounded by the Trent. On its southerly border it rested on the road by which we marched to Trenton. At the central point of this side, three guard-tents were located, and this was the recognized official entrance to the camp. Directly opposite these tents, across the parade-ground which occupied the whole front of the camp, and was at least one hundred and fifty feet wide, was the company street of H, the central street of nine others. This street was nearly the same length as the depth of the parade-ground; that is, about one hundred and fifty feet. Our company was sheltered in six Sibley tents of a conical shape, sixteen feet in diameter at their bases, and about the same height, an opening of a foot being left at the top, with a cover over it for smoke and ventilation. These tents were of thick duck, and, after we became accustomed to their care, were really much more comfortable dwellings than would be supposed. They had one singular exposure, however: in some of our heaviest rains they would suddenly begin to leak for a foot or two upwards from their base. The rain dropped upon our faces as we lay asleep, and obliged us to have..

Book Reminiscences of Confederate Service 1861 1865

Download or read book Reminiscences of Confederate Service 1861 1865 written by Francis W Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the wartime adventures of an Englishman who adopted the confederate cause in the War Between the States, and who consequently joined the crew of a Confederate cruiser that sailed from Southampton in 1862 to run the Union blockade. Afterward, he served in the confederate army and participated in eleven battles. His reminiscences were written less than ten years after his experiences, and he presents them in a readable and cogent manner, as one would expect from a man whose chosen profession was that of journalist. After the war, he and a partner acquired the older Charleston courier and blended the two papers as the news and courier, with the author, Francis "Frank" Dawson as editor. Perhaps his wife is better known to the present generation than he; Sarah Morgan Dawson's The Civil War Diary of a Southern Woman, is still in circulation and widely read today. His life was fruitful, but short. At the age of 48, he was murdered. Annotations delve into the story behind his murder and provide references for further reading. There are more than ten illustrations that were not in the original edition, of which only 100 copies were printed for private reading. Now a wide audience has the means to enjoy this fascinating book
