Book Five Chiefs

Download or read book Five Chiefs written by Justice John Paul Stevens and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he resigned last June, Justice Stevens was the third longest serving Justice in American history (1975-2010) -- only Justice William O. Douglas, whom Stevens succeeded, and Stephen Field have served on the Court for a longer time. In Five Chiefs, Justice Stevens captures the inner workings of the Supreme Court via his personal experiences with the five Chief Justices -- Fred Vinson, Earl Warren, Warren Burger, William Rehnquist, and John Roberts -- that he interacted with. He reminisces of being a law clerk during Vinson's tenure; a practicing lawyer for Warren; a circuit judge and junior justice for Burger; a contemporary colleague of Rehnquist; and a colleague of current Chief Justice John Roberts. Along the way, he will discuss his views of some the most significant cases that have been decided by the Court from Vinson, who became Chief Justice in 1946 when Truman was President, to Roberts, who became Chief Justice in 2005. Packed with interesting anecdotes and stories about the Court, Five Chiefs is an unprecedented and historically significant look at the highest court in the United States.

Included are Myers's and Warner's interviews with best-selling and widely renown memoirists Mary Karr, Elizabeth Gilbert, Dr. Azar Nafisi, Dani Shapiro, Margo Jefferson, Raquel Cepeda, Jessica Valenti, Daisy Hernández, Mark Matousek, and Sue William Silverman. Book Reminiscences of Virginia s Judges and Jurists

Download or read book Reminiscences of Virginia s Judges and Jurists written by John Randolph Tucker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Virginia's Judges and Jurists: Address at a Banquet Tendered to the Members of the New Court of Appeals by the Richmond Bar Association, February 7th, 1895 The Military Court, during the reconstruction era, I never saw, and knew but one of its judges. Let it pass. They had been made to supersede the court of the Pierpont Dynasty, composed of the venera ble President Moncure Judge William T. J oynes and Judge Lucas P. Thompson; but he, dying very soon, his place was supplied by Judge Alexander Rives. Upon the organization of the court under the Constitution of 1870, it was constituted of President Moncure, J oynes, Christian, Staples and Anderson. Judge J oynes died, lamented by the profession as a judge of marked native ability, and of varied and accurate learning, and Judge Wood Bouldin succeeded for a few years of distinguished service until his death, when the yet living Edward C. Burks succeeded him for too short a term of service; another of my old college-mates, and a graduate with Judge Robertson in law under my father in 1842. Of this court all have passed away except Judges Christian and Staples, but the record of their decisions enables us to estimate them as eminently worthy of their honored predecessors. Their praise is voiced by the profession for learning, ability and integrity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book King of King Court

Download or read book King of King Court written by Travis Dandro and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic and devastating memoir about the cycle of trauma caused by addiction within one family From a child’s-eye view, Travis Dandro recounts growing up with a drug-addicted birth father, alcoholic step-dad, and overwhelmed mother. As a kid, Dandro would temper the everyday tension with flights of fancy, finding refuge in toys and animals and insects rather than in the unpredictable adults around him. He perceptively details the effects of poverty and addiction on a family while maintaining a child’s innocence for as long as he can. King of King Court spans from Travis’s early childhood through his teen years, focusing not only on the obviously abusive actions but also on the daily slights and snubs that further strain relations between him and his parents. Alongside his birth father committing crimes and shooting up, King of King Court lingers on scenes of him criticizing Travis and his siblings. Dandro gives equal heft to these anecdotes, emphasizing how damaging even relatively slight traumas can be to a child’s worldview. As Travis matures into young adulthood and begins to understand the forces shaping his father’s toxic behaviors, the story becomes even more nuanced. Travis is empathetic to his father’s own tragic history but unable to escape the cycle of misconduct and reprisals. King of King Court is a revelatory autobiography that examines trauma, addiction, and familial relations in a unique and sensitive way.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Driving, wild and hilarious” (The Washington Post), here is the incredible “memoir” of the legendary actor, gambler, raconteur, and Saturday Night Live veteran. When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Book Hold Still

Download or read book Hold Still written by Sally Mann and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Book Award finalist is a revealing and beautifully written memoir and family history from acclaimed photographer Sally Mann. In this groundbreaking book, a unique interplay of narrative and image, Mann's preoccupation with family, race, mortality, and the storied landscape of the American South are revealed as almost genetically predetermined, written into her DNA by the family history that precedes her. Sorting through boxes of family papers and yellowed photographs she finds more than she bargained for: "deceit and scandal, alcohol, domestic abuse, car crashes, bogeymen, clandestine affairs, dearly loved and disputed family land . . . racial complications, vast sums of money made and lost, the return of the prodigal son, and maybe even bloody murder." In lyrical prose and startlingly revealing photographs, she crafts a totally original form of personal history that has the page-turning drama of a great novel but is firmly rooted in the fertile soil of her own life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Hugh Lawson White, Judge of the Supreme Court of Tennessee, Member of the Senate of the United States, Etc., Etc: With Selections From His Speeches and Correspondence Tins book has many imperfections. It is not compiled by an experienced writer, nor has it been prepared with the advantages of position or reputation. It is simply a tribute to the memory of one beloved and departed; the offering of that almost idolatry which is found only in the breasts of those few who by nature are nearest and dearest to man. Only the merits of earnestness and devotion can therefore be claimed for it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
