S Infantry Bear in mind, if you will, that inasmuch as we were over there doing our little bit, yes, meeting the daily trials, ex periencing the many little joys, but more Often the many little sorrows which would time and again creep into our hearts, we did so with a consolation and a trust that our loved ones at home were bearing with us, following us in spirit at least, giving us their hopes and trust and not a few prayers, and inasmuch as we were serving the cause, you at home were likewise serving as comrades Of us all. This war ridden world found you doing your duty in noble vein, which was known and felt by those Of us who were many miles away. It is a fact worthy Of consideration, namely, that the late war was not won upon the battlefield merely; it was won due to the combined strength Of the forces at home and abroad. Had it not been for the loyal and unselfish support Of the so-called home forces the sum total Of events might now appear in a different light. As much as we needed arms and ammunition, we doubly needed and craved the support, the spirit and interest Of those we left behind. History has repeatedly called attention to the fact that battles have not been won by arms alone. Often a far inferior force has overcome the contending enemy due to the spirit and undying love the former have borne for the ideal, country or home for which they fought. In this late war a Similar fact was brought to light. Regardless Of the num ber Of the oncoming hordes Of the enemy, regardless Of the many and almost unsurmountable Obstacles to overcome. Download or read book Toward the Flame written by Hervey Allen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered by many to be the finest American combat memoir of the First World War, Hervey Allen?s Toward the Flame vividly chronicles the experiences of the Twenty-eighth Division in the summer of 1918. Made up primarily of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen, the Twenty-eighth Division saw extensive action on the Western Front. The story begins with Lieutenant Allen and his men marching inland from the French coast and ends with their participation in the disastrous battle for the village of Fismette. Allen was a talented observer, and the men with whom he served emerge as well-rounded characters against the horrific backdrop of the war. ø As a historical document, Toward the Flame is significant for its highly detailed account of the controversial military action at Fismette. At the same time, it easily stands as a work of literature. Clear-eyed and unsentimental, Allen employs the novelist?s powers of description to create a harrowing portrait of coalition war at its worst.
