Book A Reminiscence of Newport Before the During the Revolutionary War Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Reminiscence of Newport Before the During the Revolutionary War Classic Reprint written by E. B. Lyman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reminiscence of Newport Before the During the Revolutionary War These recollections are many of them derived from the conversations of Mrs. Wanton, who delighted to gather her grand-children about her, and amuse them with stories of the past, that had all the charm of romance. Born in 1728, she lived through the old French War, during the palmy days of Newport, before the Revolution, mingled in the first society of the place, and was familiar with the most remarkable characters of that period, both at her fathers and her husbands homes, and was well acquainted with all the distinguished noblemen who accompanied the French troops to this country. Gifted by nature with uncommon intellect, keen wit, and remarkable memory, her mind was stored with these recollections, which like the colors in the old Italian paintings, became more vivid from age. She lived to the age of ninety-two years and eight months, and like many other aged persons, dwelt more in the past than in the present. Her father, Mr. Bull, one of first lawyers of his time, was the friend of Dean Berkeley, who stood godfather to Mrs. Wanton when she was christened - always proud of this distinction she kept a copy of his Minute Philosopher in her possession as long as she lived. In the big waiting-room there were, perhaps, a score of persons, dozing or reading, no one of whom resembled the man described by the porter. He passed across to the telephone booths and as he did so the one for whom he was searching emerged from the telegraph ofiice, walked rapidly to the Forty second Street doors, and jumped into a taxi cab waiting at the curb. Book History and Antiquities of the Newport Pagnell Hundreds Classic Reprint

Download or read book History and Antiquities of the Newport Pagnell Hundreds Classic Reprint written by Oliver Ratcliff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Antiquities of the Newport Pagnell Hundreds The editing of this volume has been a labour of love, recalling happy memories of the past. It is about forty years since I took up my residence in the historic Hundreds of Newport Pagnell, and I have never missed an opportunity of obtaining a local work, and making a note of matters I deemed of interest and importance. In the follow ing pages will be found the result of my gleanings. The task of history-writing bristles with pitfalls, and it is idle to suppose that there is no weak spot in this book for the critic to assail. But critics, if in the main less important than they affect to be, have their uses as advertising media, and while expressing that nothing which care and diligence could do to make this work perfect has been left undone, I beg to express a hope that the person who finds errors, and sets out to expose them, will do so as loudly as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Jacob Chase: A Paper Read Before the Newport Historical Society at the Regular Quarterly Meetings, November 18, 1918 Some of us have watched the (lawn and the sunrise flood with exquisite coloring the ice-bound peaks of the giant Himalayas. But never was the ascendency of all this sub limity of nature in her grandest mold so great as to make our dear old Narragansett Bay and its adjacent shores seem small. Let us assume, therefore, that Jacob Chase, at nine years of age, was a happy little boy. He does not appear from his memoirs to have taken any very great interest in the momentous events of those davs. We do not find in them any mention of the great war, the achievement of our honored Perry or anything of the sort. His first impres sions appear to be of the school he attended, and especially of the schoolmaster, who is described as follows. Download or read book Memoir of the Life and Character of Rev Samuel Hopkins D D written by John Ferguson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Life and Character of Rev. Samuel Hopkins, D. D: Formerly Pastor of the First Congregational Church in Newport, Rhode Island, With an Appendix It is in this respect that the life of Dr. Hopkins, as written by himself, and edited by his friend, Dr. Stephen West of Stock bridge, appears to be defective. It is indeed an admirable work, and has been read with pleasure and profit by Christians of all denominations. The rare modesty of Dr. Hopkins, which is exhibited in it, and his deep and ardent piety, have been the delight of such devoted servants of God as Henry Martyn, and Levi Parsons, Mrs. Newell, and Mrs. Judson, and were often mentioned in their conversation or diaries. But although for an exhibition of simplicity and lowliness of heart, Dr. Hopkins' autobiography is eminently valuable, yet it does not clearly de lineate his whole character, so as to enable the youthful reader to form a true estimate of its loveliness and-excellence. Dr. West does indeed tell us, in his introduction, that his friend was a man of unusual candor, mildness, discrimination, and benevolence 5 but with the exception of a general appeal to his printed works, (where indeed the discerning reader can discover these traits, ) he has scarcely mentioned a solitary illustration of them. He does not, of course, furnish us with the necessary materials for comparing Dr. Hopkins' lowly opinion of himself with his high attainments when measured by the ordinary stand ard. The work is indeed Dr. Hopkins' confession, rather than his biography. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
