Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Grenadier: 1914 1919 Everyone knows how the War started; if they don't, it is through their own idleness, as books on the subject are legion; I do not propose, therefore, to do more than tell how it started for me and for many more harmless civilians at that time employed in peaceful occupations. The London Season had just come to its allotted end, a season perhaps more magnificent than any of its forerunners. Everyone had given themselves up to amusement; this, indeed, seemed to be the sole object of existence. Whether people had any foreboding of the misery that was to descend on the world I know not, but I remember often feeling that something vague was going to happen, and that the season of 1914 was going to be the last of its kind. CHAPTER XIV THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME We stayed at Volkeringhove till the 29th, during which time we trained, and also had Battalion Sports. The battalion was in very good fettle now, and keen to have another proper fight with the Germans after so many months of trench warfare. There had been a few changes among the officers, and the companies, when we left for the Somme, were commanded by (1) Wolridge Gordon, (2) Stanhope, (3) Hopley, (4) Mackenzie. Colonel Brooke still commanded, with Major Rasch second in command, and Oliver Lyttleton adjutant. We entrained on the 20th at Bollezeele, and travelling all night, arrived at a little place called Petit Houin, not far from St. Pol. Here we detrained and marched some way to La Souich; it was a very hot day, and the march was somewhat trying. La Souich is a pretty little place close to Doullens. We did not stay there long, leaving for the forward area on the 1st, having dinners and bathing at Loucheux en route. We went on in lorries to the Courcelles au Bois area; this place was some three miles from the front line. For some time the authorities seemed undecided where to use us, and we moved about from place to place doing various jobs until we finally settled more or less on the British right wing. We bivouacked at Courcelles; the weather was frightfully hot, and there was practically no shade, so we weren't very comfortable there. We used to go up to the front line every night to dig trenches for the 20th Division, the idea then being that we should eventually take over that part of the line and attack from there. This was the extreme left of the original attack on July 1st, and here the attack had failed. We continued digging up till the 6th, and really made some extraordinarily fine...

Book Flakhelfer to Grenadier

Download or read book Flakhelfer to Grenadier written by Karl Heinz Schlesier and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a German boy drafted into military service during WWII is vividly recounted in this memoir of combat and survival. On January 7, 1943, the German Government ordered that boys as young as fifteen be drafted into anti-aircraft service, the Reich Labor Service, and the armed forces. Throughout the war, about 200,000 boys became Flakhelfer and served in batteries of light and heavy flak. Drafted at fifteen, Karl Heinz Schlesier served in regions that suffered some of the heaviest air raids of the war. His memoir is a coming of age story in a world gone mad, where working beside Russian POWs, protecting industries with slave labor, courting a girl among bombed-out ruins was unremarkable. As the war approached its bitter end, Schlesier was thrown into a disintegrating frontline only fifty kilometers from his childhood home. Basing his memoir solely on his diary notes and memories of that period, Schlesier has consciously avoided including what he learned after the war. Flakhelfer to Grenadier gives a voice to the silent generation of boys born in Germany in 1926 and 1927. This generation has been silent because the horror it knew pales in comparison to the horror of the war machine it was conscripted into.

Book Reminiscences of Captain Gronow formerly of the Grenadier Guards

Download or read book Reminiscences of Captain Gronow formerly of the Grenadier Guards written by Captain Rees Howell Gronow and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Gronow, joined the Grenadier guards as a young subaltern in 1812, having completed his studies at Eton and was widely know in England and the Continent thereafter as a raconteur and a fine pistol shot. His “Reminiscences” span four volumes in their original edition, an edited version was produced around the turn of the 19th century, having varied titles but following a stream of collected anecdotes set in distinct eras. These memoirs have achieved a high degree of fame and are justly accorded much historical respect, especially in those incidents where Gronow was personally present to record the words and deeds of those around him. Although admitted to the highest society, Gronow is far from being a snob and his works bear the stamp of a high degree of moral probity, they could not be described as the handiwork of a gossip. The first volume concentrates, as the title suggests, around Gronow’s experiences between 1812 and 1816, initially his experiences were military; He fought under the Duke of Wellington in the last two years of the Peninsular war being present at the battle of the Nivelle. His memories of the 1815 campaign and the culminating battle of Waterloo are widely known and quoted, they are vivid, accurate and of especial interest. After the fall of Napoleon, Gronow recounts his adventures and encounters in society in London and Paris, in the clubs, soirées, the opera and the field of honour, tales of “six bottlemen” and duels abound, tales of fortunes won and lost at rouge et noir. The great and the good of the period appear in thumb sketches and anecdotes; men such as The Duke of Wellington, Blucher, Beau Brumell, Romeo Coates, General Ornano, Lord Byron, Lord Canning, Shelley, Kangaroo Cook, the Duke of York all feature. “Reading Gronow is like drinking champagne - effervescent and mildly addictive” Author - Captain Rees Howell Gronow - (1794–1865)

Book excerpt: 'An eminent writer has said that regiments great in history have this in common with mortals- through old in glory and honour, they have yet the vigour of youth. To none may the remark be more truthful applied then the Grenadier Guards...' Thus wrote Chichester and Burges-Short in 1900 and, judging by the Regiment's history over the last fifty years, the words ring as true as ever. For this history of Grenadier Guards is indeed a microcosm of all the proud endeavours of the British Army. There are few places of significance where the Regiment has not served: after the round-up of Nazis in 1945 in Germany and Austria, Grenadiers saw action in Palestine and in the jungles of Malaya, and subsequently served during emergencies in Cyprus, the Cameroons, British Guiana, Belize, Northern Ireland, the Gulf and with the United Nations, to indicate but some of the over seas postings which included the Falklands and Hong Kong. Grenadier have also been responsible for the protection of British Sovereigns and the great ceremonial events in London, including the funerals of King George VI and Winston Churchill. Oliver Lindsay has produced a rigorous work of history-his fourth book- rich in quotation after interviewing Grenadiers, serving and retired, of all generations. Drawing on their accounts as well as his own experiences - for he was a regular soldier for thirty-five years- he has written a book of extraordinary interest. Unique among such historians, he tells of the experiences of wives in such places as war-torn Germany in 1945. Tripoli and Cyprus. The story of Grenadiers who served with the Guards parachute Company and in the SAS is included. Five years in the writing, this comprehensive record included coverage of training, tactics, the pronounced changes in the armed forces and the views and anecdotes of the Non Commissioned Officers and Guardsmen. Profusely illustrated and with 14 detailed maps, this is a dedicated history of the senior infantry Regiment in the British Army and what is probably the most famous Regiment in the world.

P for Stafford; Being Anecdotes of the Camp, the Court, and the Clubs, at the Close of the Last War With France It has been my lot to have lived through the greater part of one of the most eventful centuries of England's history, and I have been thrown amongst most of the remarkable men of my day; whether soldiers, statesmen, men of letters, theatrical people, or those whose birth and fortune - rather, perhaps, than their virtues or talents - have caused them to be conspicuous in society at home or abroad. Nature having endowed me with a strong memory, I can recall with all their original vividness scenes that took place fifty years ago, and distinctly recollect the face, walk, and voice, as well as the dress and general manner, of every one whom I have known. Book excerpt: A collection of memoirs about the Peninsular War, the Battle of Waterloo, and society and personalities of Regency London and 19th century Paris, by a sometime Grenadier Guards officer, unsuccessful parliamentarian, and dandy. Gronow displays social attitudes of the day which would now be regarded as unacceptable, but is a clever raconteur who brings to life both the horrors of war and the gaiety of high society. The spelling in this book is rather creative (including the occasional spelling of "ankle" as "ancle"), and the punctuation is remarkably varied. I have tried to preserve both, except that the spaces between a word and the following colon or semicolon have been removed. There are also many French words and phrases, whose meaning will usually be obvious as soon as you realise they are French. Of course I apologize for any genuine errors in spelling and punctuation that have crept into this file.
