Book Reminiscences Addresses and Essays Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences Addresses and Essays Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Francis Lieber and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Addresses, and Essays, Vol. 1 At the request of the widow of Dr. Francis Lieber, I have undertaken to examine and arrange for publication some of his less extended, I can hardly call them his less important, writings. The task, though a pleasant one, was not easy, for the papers submitted to me were voluminous, related to a great variety of subjects, and were originally printed in divers forms during a period of literary activity which extended through almost fifty years. Moreover, while much that he wrote was upon transient topics, not much was trivial. He brought to the discussion of local and temporary questions rich stores of learning and habits of philosophical thought. Even in those essays and paragraphs which are humorous there is a grave and substantial foundation. He was thoroughly earnest in that which was least and in that which was most. He was zealous in his desire to promote the highest good of modern society by a study of the past, by a comparison of existing institutions and of the most recent acts of legislation in different countries, and by applying the fundamental principles of justice - of rights and of duties - to the passing events in America and Europe. There is consequently very little which he printed in pamphlets, magazines, or newspapers which would not be valued by a student of political science, interested in the lessons to be derived from the history of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Sympathy: Reminiscences in Essay and Verse Some years ago in London at one of those salons where gather, by a sort of mental capil lary attraction, the men and women famous in current history, I overheard an exquisite use of this word sympathy in its broader sense. I was conversing with the author of The Light of Asia, when our hostess naively asked him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sketches The suggestion of this volume came from two students of former years who have attained dis tinction in letters. If the approbation Of Old friends in whose judgment and good taste one has confidence is endorsed by acceptance on the part Of the first publisher to whom the material is submitted, and a fair Offer is made, it is ex cusable perhaps to yield to a secretly cherished wish and bring Old papers out again from their dusty retirement. If the reception of the volume should be as kindly as that of the individual pa pers, the author would have no reason to com plain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences Anticipations One tacitly recognised use of a Preface is to provide the diffident author with an opportunity of fastening the blame for the appearance of his book upon somebody else. In the present case I think I am correct in saying that this book owes its existence to the suggestion of certain of my friends who, after the appearance in 1915 of a volume of scientific essays and addresses, counselled me to issue a corresponding collection of lay essays - i.e., such as are not specially directed towards scientific subjects. This volume contains a selection of essays of this kind. Towards the conclusion of the war I was in the States on an educational mission. Facts regarding American educational institutions and ideals of which I had been ignorant, or which I had failed to realise, then came to my knowledge. This occasioned two of the essays contained in this book - that on the British Educational Mission and that on "International Education." These are in point of date the latest written. There are many anticipations in those essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs and Essays: Illustrative of Art, Literature and Social Morals If I were required to sum up in two great names whatever the art of painting had contemplated and achieved of highest and best, I would invoke Raphael and Titian. The former as the most perfect example of all that has been accomplished in the expression of thought through the medium of form: the latter, of all that has been accomplished in the expression of life through the medium of color. Hence it is that, while both have given us mind, and both have given us beauty, Mind is ever the characteristic of Raphael - Beauty, that of Titian. Considered under this point of view, these wonderful men remain to us as representatives of the two great departments of art. All who went before them, and all who follow after them, may be ranged under the banners of one or the other of these great kings and leaders. Under the banners of Raphael appear the majestic thinkers in art, the Florentine and Roman painters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; and Albert Durer, in Germany. Ranged on the side of Titian appear the Venetian, the Lombard, the Spanish and Flemish masters. When a school of art arose which aimed at uniting the characteristics of both, what was the result? A something second-hand and neutral, - the school of the Academicians and the Mannerists, a crowd of painters, who neither felt what they saw, nor saw what they felt; who trusted neither to the God within them, nor the nature around them; and who ended by giving us Form without Soul, - Beauty without Life. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Literary Life The principal, and indeed besetting, dif ficulty against which I have had to struggle, has been the constant introduction, if not obtrusion, Of Self: I have been inevitably compelled to put that Self in the fore ground, as it were, Of every picture deli neated; but not, I trust, at the expense Of injuring the effect of the middle or back ground Of the composition. The reader will perhaps admit the impracticability of rendering the matter otherwise; but to con sole, Or to reconcile him, he may be assured that in most instances the middle or back ground will be found to be the most pic turesque or instructive portion Of the picture. To keep up the metaphor. Time, which Is Of so much use in mellowing the colours and blending the tints Of the pencil, seems to be not lessf'occa'sionally serviceable in harmonising the productlons of the pen. To reprint from the Journal of Education some of the papers which I fur nished, at the editor's request, as Reminiscences of an Old Teacher. I should be glad to have every young man in the country seeking for a truly liberal education live such a life as I lived till I entered college. Through life, though spent at a distance from the fields, and in an occupation as unlike husbandry and gardening as possible, I have en joyed the familiar knowledge I obtained of the earth, and of everything that grows out of the earth, and of the animals, quadrupeds, birds, fishes, and insects with which I became familiarly acquainted. I have been benefited and blest by the habits I formed of using all my bodily faculties in daily vigorous exercise for some hours every summer's day till I entered college. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Casket of Reminiscences The author of the Reminiscences contained in this volume has little to say in regard to them by way of proem. They were written to amuse a few hours of the summer and autumn of the present year, and appeared almost daily in the columns of the Washington Chronicle precisely as they were originally thrown off from his pen. Though very sensible of their deficiencies in point of literary finish, he has not judged it expedient to modify them in any essential particular; and he will, indeed, be highly gratified if they shall now he read by those into whose hands they may chance to fall with as much interest as they seemed originally to awaken. He has no apology to make for certain rather unkind strictures indulged in regard to several individuals upon whose character and conduct he has undertaken to remark. He has chosen to speak the unvarnished truth, both as to men and things; and he is quite well satisfied that, sooner or later, all considerate and impartial men will come to the conclusion that in doing so he is not justly subject to censure. Should there he those who shall choose to join issue with him as to facts herein narrated they will now have it in their power to do so under circumstances altogether convenient to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sketches, Historical and Biographical But while his contemporaries say he used his sarcasm cruelly at times, struck with venom as if he hated his fellowmen, they bear undivided testimony to many acts of generosity and kindness to the poor and needy, and that he was genial and attractive to young men. When Mr. Pu, lately one of the leaders of the Lancaster county bar, first went to Lancaster, as a young man, he had letters of introduction to F. And Stevens. F. Discouraged him from settling there and repelled him with coldness. Stevens met him pleasantly; said it was a good place for a thorough young lawyer, and at the first court came stumping into his office and asked him to go into a case with him; said he wanted to see the stud he was made of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Preacher Many a life, like many a day, has thus begun with the fairest hopes, but to be prematurely shortened by clouds, storms, and disaster. In the varied, the variegated, and the solemn scenes through which I have passed during a long term of years, there are some things so strange and startling, that a record Of them might seem to many but the wild circumstances of a frenzied imagination. However, be this as it may, they are those which relate to human life, and as events occur almost every day which make facts stronger than fiction, those which I have to pre sent may perhaps be interesting to the ordinary reader, suggestive to the philanthropist, and admonitory to the reckless and inexperienced.
