In her teen years she and her family, as with all Italians, suffered and were witness to the horrors of bombings, executions, and other brutalities perpetrated by home-grown and foreign aggressors. She became a member of the Resistenza as a partisan, belonging to a group called the Garibaldi Brigade around her home city of Turin and participated in dangerous missions to support the fighters in the underground for several years. More than once, she put herself in harm s way for the good of others and for her country. Fortunately, she lived to tell about her experiences even though she is still emotionally distraught over memories of this horrific time. In 1946 she came to America as a War Bride, marrying a man she had briefly met only a year earlier. He promised to return to Italy to marry her, which he did. Her early years as a young woman and mother in a foreign land, married to a deeply-flawed man she really didn t know at all, were unhappy and presented her with many challenges that might have subdued a lesser person. Thanks in part to the strengths from her upbringing and experiences in Italy, she endured and is contented living in Scottsdale, Arizona except for the fact that her story had remained untold. ------------------------------- Born during WWII into a German family in New York City, Bill Diekmann grew up surrounded by immigrant families from all across Europe. His early interest in commercial aviation and his Aeronautical Engineering degree permitted him to travel around the world in that industry. While his writings were mostly technical reports and business contracts, he enjoyed using the written word to help create understanding and consensus. In retirement, writing tugged at him even more. Thus meeting Margherita Bertola Fray and learning of her desire to have the story of her unique experiences in the Italian Resistance put into print presented an opportunity to learn even more about recent European history and exercise his passion for writing. Bill lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife Janine. Hall?s proposal to "drop a man by parachute" behind enemy lines in northeastern Italy with the plan to obstruct the Brenner Pass and thereby hasten the war?s end, and his eventual death in a Nazi prison camp, have been the subject of a biography by combat historian Patrick K. O?Donnell, who calls the episode "the most daring spy mission" of the war. Donna Hennessee Bryan, whose mother-in-law was Hall?s non-genetically-related first cousin and also his first sweetheart, reveals how family dynamics helped motivate Hall to dream up and try to execute such a daring plan.
