Book excerpt: Is it possible to embrace suffering as a privilege, rather than a punishment? Beloved authors Katherine and Jay Wolf offer readers the bold invitation to trust a known God with an unknown future, as well as practical insights into surviving anything by redefining how we think about everything. After miraculously surviving a near-fatal brainstem stroke at age 26, as told in their memoir, Hope Heals, life for Katherine and Jay Wolf changed forever - and so did the way they viewed God, the world, and themselves in it. There was no going back to normal after such a tragedy. Yet Katherine and Jay learned that suffering is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new story. In Suffer Strong, they invite us into this new story as they share universal lessons and helpful practices that will help us to: Recognize we are being equipped for an uncommon assignment, not cursed by our story. Transform our unmet expectations into brave anticipations. Disrupt the myth that joy can only be found in a pain-free life. Rewrite the narrative of hard circumstances by turning our definitions of suffering into declarations of strength. And, ultimately, thrive even in the lives we never imagined living.

Book Travel as a Political Act

Download or read book Travel as a Political Act written by Rick Steves and published by Rick Steves. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.

Book The Power of Thought

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Wright L. Lassiter Jr.
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing

  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book The Power of Thought written by Dr. Wright L. Lassiter Jr. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America has changed much since that day in December 1955 when African Americans in Alabama formed the Montgomery Improvement Association and elected Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. its president. In assuming that post, the kernel of a dream was planted in Dr. King, and his leadership and oratory helped to nurture that dream. The Power of Thought honors the powerful oratory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and underscores the importance of his legacy, particularly for youth today. During the tyranny of segregation, many African Americans could point to the system as the reason for the evil treatment they experienced. Today it is problematic to simply blame the system, drop into a defensive mode, become self-serving, and narrowly define our own spheres of competence. As a product of the Civil Rights era, author Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr. has been a student of the life and legacy of Dr. King. Given the decline of racial segregation and overt discrimination, he believes it is now more important than ever for black youth in particular to know and understand the full compass of their past, its triumphs and tragedies, its values and lessons. More than ever we and our youth must appreciate our history and the heroic contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to avoid self-imposed barriers.

Book Church as Communion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Kariatlis
  • Publisher : ATF Press
  • Release : 2020-03-20
  • ISBN : 1925612597
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Church as Communion written by Philip Kariatlis and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book innovatively explores the notion of koinonia for understanding the nature and function of the Church. Since the Scriptures assert that the Church is the Church of God, God's communal mode of existence is looked at namely, God who is a communion of three hypostases relating to one another in an interpenetrating koinonia of infinite love as a way of understanding the very being of the church as communion. Such a notion of koinonia, far from having anything to do with socio-political understandings, suggests that it is a foundational gift bestowed from above to the world as the solution par excellence to the impasse of isolationism. More often than not, however, such an ecclesiology of communion has not taken seriously the historical reality of the Church living within the fallen world along with its ceaseless temptations, divisions and even sins in history. In this way, it becomes apparent that a dialectic needs to be acknowledged in the notion of communion as both foundational gift from God, and yet one still to be fully realised. Accordingly, this work shows that the Church is not only as the gift of God's miraculous presence here on earth. The Church is also constantly striving to exist epicletically until such time as it will fully experience the final consummation in Gods eschatological kingdom. An examination of this double dimensionality of the Church is undertaken in order to assess if this is in line with the Scriptural witness of the ekklesia. Having established the gift-goal dialectic in the notion of koinonia in the New Testament Church, the study then traces the trajectory of this dynamic approach to koinonia in the Churchs worship and authoritative structures. This promises to cast both a deeper light on, and a more realistic solution to ecclesiological problems within the life of the Church today, allowing for the Churchs constant renewal.
