Book excerpt: "Things at Cabrini Catholic Academy, a private boys high school, are as stifling as usual until Sister Beatrice asks the bookish Vincent (a problem student because of boredom) to tutor his Adonis-like classmate, Rob (a problem student because, unfortunately, he is on the dumb side). As it happens, Vincent leads a rich fantasy life (that is explored in hilarious asides) and also has a homosexual crush on the dazzling Rob. The good Sister's assignment proves to be both tantalizing and, in the end, a sobering lesson in life, as the enthralled Vincent attempts to reveal the arcane mysteries of poetry and philosophy to the doltish Rob, while subtly sounding him out on other possibilities. But, in a series of deftly comic scenes, Vincent becomes well aware that discretion is indeed the better part of valor--particularly when the object of your sublimated passion can think of nothing but sports, girls and getting through school without cracking a book."--

Download or read book Assessment for Excellence written by Alexander W. Astin and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Assessment for Excellence arrives as higher education enters a new era of the accountability movement. In the face of mandates such as results-based funding and outcomes-based accreditation, institutions and assessment specialists are feeling increasingly pressured to demonstrate accountability to external constituencies. The practice of assessment under these new accountability pressures takes on special significance for the education of students and the development of talent across the entire higher education system. This book introduces a talent development approach to educational assessment as a counter to prevailing philosophies, illustrating how contemporary practices are unable to provide institutions with meaningful data with which to improve educational outcomes. It provides administrators, policymakers, researchers, and analysts with a comprehensive framework for developing new assessment programs to promote talent development and for scrutinizing existing policies and practices. Written for a wide audience, the book enables the lay reader to quickly grasp the imperatives of a properly-designed assessment program, and also to gain adequate statistical understanding necessary for examining current or planned assessment policies. More advanced readers will appreciate the technical appendix for assistance in conducting statistical analyses that align with a talent development approach. In addition, institutional researchers will benefit from sections that outline the development of appropriate student databases.

Book Straight Ahead as Usual

  • Author : Logan Patrick Harrison
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse

Download or read book Straight Ahead as Usual written by Logan Patrick Harrison and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-01-07 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the outmoded educational model in which American children all across the United States continue to be educated with, and why this educational model is crippling the middle-class and slowly putting America behind other emerging economies. Many of the ideas are not novel, nor does this book claim them to be. It is a portrayal, however, of how long many of these ideas have been on the table, have proven to have been effective, but have been killed in legislatures in many of the states and at the federal level. Although it is highly critical of the current education model and the many factions that breathe life into its perpetual existence, this book offers insight into why it is so imperative that citizens begin to become education consumers rather than just bystanders doing what theyre told. Finally, it offers some practical advice on how to organize, how to align incentives for citizens to become more engaged in this area, and policy initiatives in which citizens should begin to strongly back at their local legislatures and at the federal level.

Book Learning from the Boys

Download or read book Learning from the Boys written by Valarie G. Lee and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “Boy Crisis” is cited often in educational and news reports due to the consistent reading achievement gap for boys and the statistics paint a dismal picture of boys in school. Politicians and researchers often focus on boys’ low scores on reading achievement tests and compare these scores to the girls’ scores with little consideration for the actual reading lives of boys. As a result, adolescent boys’ vernacular reading is most often misunderstood. This book documents my journey as a mother of three boys and teacher of adolescents, as I attempt to articulate both the in-school and out-of-school experiences of boys. The book describes my attempts at creating a more complete picture of the reading lives and experiences of adolescent boys by describing three boys and their reading experiences in their natural contexts. It provides a rich description, revealing disconnects between school literacy practices and boys’ vernacular literacy practices. In this book, parents, administrators, and teachers will find discover the complexity of boys as readers, challenging educators to pursue effective practice and curricular decisions which go beyond the quick fixes for "the boy problem" so often seen in response to low test scores. This book provides parents, administrators, and teachers with an in-depth description of three boy readers. What emerges is a description of the complexity of boys as readers, challenging educators to pursue effective practice and curricular decisions which go beyond the quick fixes for “the boy problem” so often seen in response to low test scores. Teachers interested in mentoring boy readers will find this book helpful. This book can also be used with pre-service and in-service teachers, in undergraduate and graduate courses, and in professional development.
