Download or read book Remarks on Slavery and Emancipation Classic Reprint written by Francis John Higginson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Slavery and Emancipation Ejects of Slavery. I shall now Slightly speak of some Of the effects of slavery, which, though apparently indi rect, are necessary. We have seen how carefully all mental improvement was guarded against in the slave; and also how Slight was the protection of his person. His morals are not better cared for. Honesty is, to be sure, cherished, 01 may be presumed to be; although where temptation is all around, and the sanctions Of any virtue are so slight, this one cannot be secure. Another, quite as important to the character, though not to the master's interest, has less protection; that is chastity. It is perhaps idle to Speak Of what there is so little pretence of regarding. The domestic relations of the slave have no protection whatever in the law, and in practice, it' is nearly the same thing. The ceremony of marriage is sometimes performed by a clergyman or a justice, but quite as Often there is no farther preliminary to male and female living together, than simply taking each other's word, which is not thought very binding, for they divorce and marry again at pleasure. What a mockery indeed would be the marriage rites, with the solemn declaration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wrong of Slavery, the Right of Emancipation: And the Future of the African Race in the United States The experiment we have been trying for more than three-quarters of a century was, whether, over social and industrial elements thus discordant, a republican government, asserting freedom in thought, in speech, in action, can be peacefully maintained. Grave doubts, gloomy apprehensions, touching the nation's Future, have clouded the hopes of our wisest public men in days past. Even the statesmen of the Revolution saw on the horizon the cloud no bigger than a man's hand. Gradually it rose and spread and darkened. The tempest burst upon us at last. Then some, faint-hearted and despairing of the Re public, prophesied that the good old days were gone, never to return. Others, stronger in hope and faith. Download or read book Slave Emancipation In Cuba written by Rebecca J. Scott and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slave Emancipation in Cuba is the classic study of the end of slavery in Cuba. Rebecca J. Scott explores the dynamics of Cuban emancipation, arguing that slavery was not simply abolished by the metropolitan power of Spain or abandoned because of economic contradictions. Rather, slave emancipation was a prolonged, gradual and conflictive process unfolding through a series of social, legal, and economic transformations.Scott demonstrates that slaves themselves helped to accelerate the elimination of slavery. Through flight, participation in nationalist insurgency, legal action, and self-purchase, slaves were able to force the issue, helping to dismantle slavery piece by piece. With emancipation, former slaves faced transformed, but still very limited, economic options. By the end of the nineteenth-century, some chose to join a new and ultimately successful rebellion against Spanish power. In a new afterword, prepared for this edition, the author reflects on the complexities of postemancipation society, and on recent developments in historical methodology that make it possible to address these questions in new ways.

Book Emancipation in Louisiana

Download or read book Emancipation in Louisiana written by Alfred C. Hills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emancipation in Louisiana: Speech I have been arraigned here as attempting to menace this Conven tion by some authority of the Commanding General. I repel all such insinuations as false and groundless, but I repeat, that in my Opinion, gentlemen, members of this' Convention cannot stand up here and argue in favor of slavery in any form, without committing moral perjury. That is what I said, and to that I shall adhere. (applause) Mr. President, the gentleman from the Fifth District [mr Abell] has seen fit to make a long argument to overthrow my asser tion that slavery does not exist in the State of Louisiana. I say that assertion is literally true, that there is not a slave in the State of Louisiana to-day. There is no slavery, and can be none without the presence of physical power to enforce the'obedience of the slave to his master. That is an indispensable element of slavery, with out which it cannot exist. I ask the gentleman, where is the force today to compel the labor of the slave in this State Where 'is the auction-block? Where is the lash? Where is the power of the master to whip his slave and to enforce his will? The auction block has disappeared in the light of the new civilization that has dawned upon us the slave marts, where human beings were crowded together like cattle, thank God! Is no more among us and the lash has been abolished - first by the great law' of necessity, and secondly by the proclamation of military power. In the present instance, the immediate tendency of the Usury Laws has been to create an unnatural and forced extension of sugar cultivation throughout the British Colo nies: for it was soon ascertained, that, from its weight, sugar gave the most profitable freights to shipping; and, from the high duties to which it has always been easy to subject it, a larger mercantile commission on its gross sales, compared with its intrinsic Value, than' any other description of Colo nial produce. From this cause, it has always been comparatively easy to borrow money for the pur pose of settling a sugar estate and if, during the variations which so regularly occur in the value of Colonial articles, it seemed, at any time, desirable to a planter to abandon coffee, cotton, or cocoa, for the cultivation of sugar, pecuniary assistance was readily tendered by the mortgagee; but a reverse' of the process has been always found ditfi cult, if not impracticable and the conditions of a loan, 'granted on a plantation strictly agricultural, producing cattle, provisions, or corn, have probably never defaced a skin of parchment) Hence the solution of the fact, that in all the Colonies We have successively taken from foreigners, the course of cultivation has been invariably diverted from coffee, cotton, and cocoa, to that all-vilified, but.
