Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an overview and analysis of the contemporary location, distribution and dynamics of economic activity, uneven geographies of growth and the local economic development processes. Focus is on the localisation of the knowledge economy and talent, e.g. the part of the labour force which is central to the production, use and distribution of knowledge. The urban turn emphasises the importance of cities and city regions as the key places that generates economic growth in modern capitalism. The resurgence of large cities has happened concurrently with the rise of the knowledge economy and together with the increased use of talent. Thus, this book examines the relationships between the knowledge economy and city regions and how this challenge local and regional development.

Book Office Markets and Public Policy

Download or read book Office Markets and Public Policy written by Colin Jones and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that looks at how offices and office markets in cities have changed over the last 30 years. It analyses the long-term trends and processes within office markets, and the interaction with the spatial economy and the planning of cities. It draws on examples around the world, and looking forward at the future consequences of information communication technologies and the sustainability agenda, it sets out the challenges that now face investors. The traditional business centres of cities are losing their dominance to the brash new centres of the 1980s and 1990s, as the concept of the central business district becomes more diffuse. Edge cities, business space and office parks have entered the vocabulary as offices have also decentralised. The nature and pace of changes to office markets set within evolving spatial structures of cities has had implications for tenants and led to a demand for shorter leases. The consequence is a rethink of the traditional perception of property investment as a secure long term investment, and this is reflected in reduced investment holding periods by financial institutions. Office Markets & Public Policy analyses these processes and policy issues from an international perspective and covers: A descriptive and theoretical base encompassing an historical context, a review of the fundamentals of the demand for and supply of the office market and offices as an investment. Embedded within this section is a perspective on underlying forces particularly the influence of technological change. A synthesis of our understanding of the spatial structure and dynamics of local office markets at the city level. An assessment of the goals and influence of planning policies, and the evaluation of policies designed toward the long term sustainability of cities as services centres. This goes beyond standard real estate and urban economics books by assessing the changing shape of urban office markets within a spatial theoretical and policy context. It will be a useful advanced text for honours and postgraduate students of land economy; land management; property and real estate; urban planning; and urban studies. It will also be of interest to researchers, property professionals, policy-makers and planning practitioners.

Book Hub Cities in the Knowledge Economy

Download or read book Hub Cities in the Knowledge Economy written by Sven Conventz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching research topic addressed in this book is the complex and multifaceted interaction between infrastructural accessibility/connectivity of city-regions on the one hand and knowledge generation in these city-regions on the other hand. To this end, the book brings together chapters analysing how infrastructural accessibility is related to changing patterns of business location of knowledge-intensive industries in city-regions. The chapters in this book specifically dwell on recent manifestations of and developments in the accessibility/knowledge-nexus, with a particular metageographical focus on how this materializes in major city-regions. In the different chapters, this shifting relation is broached from different perspectives (seaports, airports, brainports), at different scales (ranging from global-scale analyses to case studies), and by adopting a variety of methodologies (straddling the wide variety of methodological approaches currently adopted in human geography research). Researchers contributing to this edited volume come from different scholarly backgrounds (sociology, human geography, regional planning), which allows for a varied treatise of this research topic.

Book The New Wealth of Cities

Download or read book The New Wealth of Cities written by John Montgomery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, city economies have restructured in response to the decline of older industries. This has involved new forms of planning and urban economic development, a return to traditional concerns of city building and a focus on urban design. During this period, there has also been a marked rise in our understanding of cultural development and its role in the design, economy and life of cities. In this book, John Montgomery argues that this amounts to a shift in urban development. He provides a long overdue look at the dynamics of the city, that is, how cities work in relation to the long cycles of economic development and suggests that a new wave of prosperity, built on new technologies and new industries, is just getting underway in the Western world. The New Wealth of Cities focuses on what effect this will have on cities and city regions and how they should react. Original and wide-ranging, this book will be a definitive resource on city economies and urban planning, explaining why it is that cities develop over time in periods of propulsive growth and bouts of decline.

Book Home Ownership

Download or read book Home Ownership written by J. F. Doling and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home ownership sectors in most European countries have grown in size. Whatever assets European households have acquired in recent decades, real estate appears to form a significant element in wealth portfolios. Frequently, national governments have been active in promoting the shift in tenure balance. The general question pursued in this book is about the gains and losses accruing to individual households by virtue of their position as home owners. The focus, here, is on financial gains and losses. It also concerns the losses, in the form of repayment risk, related to difficulties that some households may experience in meeting housing loan repayment schedules. The immediate background to this volume is the conference 'Housing in Europe: New Challenges and Innovations in Tomorrow's Cities', held in Reykjavik, Iceland. Hosted by the Urban Studies Institute of the University of Iceland and Centre for Housing and Property Research, Bifrost School of Business, it was held under the auspices of the European Network of Housing Researchers.
