Religious Celebrations is an alphabetically organized encyclopedia that covers more than 800 celebratory occasions from all of the world's major religious communities as well as many of the minor faith traditions. The encyclopedia provides a complete reference tool for examining the myriad ways people worldwide celebrate their religious lives across religious boundaries, providing information on numerous celebratory activities never before covered in a reference work. Offering the most comprehensive coverage of religious holidays ever assembled, this two-volume book covers festivals, commemorations, holidays, and annual religious gatherings all over the world, with special attention paid to the celebrations in larger countries. Entries written by distinguished researchers and specialists on different religious communities capture the unique intensity of each event, be it fasting or feasting, frenzied activity or the universal cessation of work, a huge gathering of the faithful en masse or a small family-centered event. The work spotlights celebrations that currently exist without overlooking now-abandoned celebrations that still impact the modern world.

Download or read book White Utopias written by Amanda J. Lucia and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformational festivals, from Burning Man to Lightning in a Bottle, Bhakti Fest, and Wanderlust, are massive events that attract thousands of participants to sites around the world. In this groundbreaking book, Amanda J. Lucia shows how these festivals operate as religious institutions for “spiritual, but not religious” (SBNR) communities. Whereas previous research into SBNR practices and New Age religion has not addressed the predominantly white makeup of these communities, White Utopias examines the complicated, often contradictory relationships with race at these events, presenting an engrossing ethnography of SBNR practices. Lucia contends that participants create temporary utopias through their shared commitments to spiritual growth and human connection. But they also participate in religious exoticism by adopting Indigenous and Indic spiritualities, a practice that ultimately renders them exclusive, white utopias. Focusing on yoga’s role in disseminating SBNR values, Lucia offers new ways of comprehending transformational festivals as significant cultural phenomena.

Book Food Festival and Religion

Download or read book Food Festival and Religion written by Francesca Ciancimino Howell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food, Festival and Religion explores how communities in northern Italy find a restorative sense of place through foodways, costuming and other forms of materiality. Festivals examined by the author vary geographically from the northern rural corners of Italy to the fashionable heart of urban Milan. The origins of these lived religious events range from Christian to vernacular Italian witchcraft and contemporary Paganism, which is rapidly growing in Italy. Francesca Ciancimino Howell demonstrates that during ritualized occasions the sacred is located within the mundane. She argues that communal feasting, pilgrimage, rituals and costumed events can represent forms of lived religious materiality. Building on the work of scholars including Foucault, Grimes and Ingold, Howell offers a theoretical “Scale of Engagement” which further tests the interfaces between and among the materialities of place, food, ritual and festivals and provides a widely-applicable model for analyzing grassroots events and community initiatives. Through extensive ethnographic research and fieldwork data, this book demonstrates that popular Italian festivals can be ritualized, liminal spaces, contributing greatly to the fields of religious, performance and ritual studies.

Book Religions and Rituals

Download or read book Religions and Rituals written by Prof. Dulal Bhattacharya and published by Exceller Books. This book was released on with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warring religions and continuous abuse of Hinduism prompted me to write this book. In the usual comparative religion approach, similes are shown while contrasts and conflicts are avoided with a passing mention. I have written both similes and contrasts for a better evaluation. In this context, I remember a story that I read about the King of Hispaniola as told by the boasting Spaniards. After the Spaniards captured the King of Hispaniola, they put him up on stakes to burn. Before setting the fire, the padre of the Spaniards asked the King if he would agree to accept Christianity since it would not only save his life but would also guarantee his entry into heaven after death. The King, after listening to the padre, asked if all Spaniards go to heaven after death. The padre answered in the affirmative. The King then said that heaven must be a very vile place full of cruel people, and the King further added that they can put fire so that he can happily join his forefathers. This story is a good reminder of how religions can make people cruel unless there is a good way of self-evaluation. This book seeks to fill up that gap in the study of comparative religion. It will supplement contemporary books like 'Snakes in Ganga' by Rajeev Malhotra and documentary films like 'The Kashmir Files' by Vivek Agnihotri.

Book Carnival and Other Christian Festivals

Download or read book Carnival and Other Christian Festivals written by Max Harris and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a riotous mix of saints and devils, street theater and dancing, and music and fireworks, Christian festivals are some of the most lively and colorful spectacles that occur in Spain and its former European and American possessions. That these folk celebrations, with roots reaching back to medieval times, remain vibrant in the high-tech culture of the twenty-first century strongly suggests that they also provide an indispensable vehicle for expressing hopes, fears, and desires that people can articulate in no other way. In this book, Max Harris explores and develops principles for understanding the folk theology underlying patronal saints' day festivals, feasts of Corpus Christi, and Carnivals through a series of vivid, first-hand accounts of these festivities throughout Spain and in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, Trinidad, Bolivia, and Belgium. Paying close attention to the signs encoded in folk performances, he finds in these festivals a folk theology of social justice that—however obscured by official rhetoric, by distracting theories of archaic origin, or by the performers' own need to mask their resistance to authority—is often in articulate and complex dialogue with the power structures that surround it. This discovery sheds important new light on the meanings of religious festivals celebrated from Belgium to Peru and on the sophisticated theatrical performances they embody.
