Book Religion and Peacebuilding

Download or read book Religion and Peacebuilding written by Harold Coward and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of September 11, 2001 religion is often seen as the motivating force behind terrorism and other acts of violence. Religion and Peacebuilding looks beyond headlines concerning violence perpetrated in the name of religion to examine how world religions have also inspired social welfare and peacemaking activism. Leading scholars from the Aboriginal, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucian, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian traditions provide detailed analyses of the spiritual resources for fostering peace within their respective religions. The contributors discuss the formidable obstacles to nonviolent conflict transformation found within sacred texts and living traditions. Case studies of Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Cambodia, and South Africa are also examined as practical applications of spiritual resources for peace.

Download or read book La Paix Mondiale written by Salomon Alain Mpouma and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book The Peace Church and the Ecumenical Community

Download or read book The Peace Church and the Ecumenical Community written by Fernando Enns and published by Studies in the Believers Churc. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, at the eighth Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Harare, Zimbabwe, a motion was tabled - and subsequently accepted by the delegates - that the World Council designate 2001 -2010 as the "Decade to Overcome Violence." In this book Enns, the delegate who proposed the motion in Harare, presents the theological foundations underlying his call for the churches of the world to work toward overcoming violence. Enns proposes that both Christian ethics and ecclesiology need to be based on a trinitarian view of God as creator of the world, incarnated in Christ, and present in the Holy Spirit, urging all Christian churches to heed the call to peace and nonviolence. "We are indebted to Fernando Enns for providing a compelling case for the historic peace church to take up its responsibility within the ecumenical context, and for stirring our imagination to think of other contexts in which to engage the church and the world in witness to peace, justice and nonviolence." - Mennonite Quarterly Review

Book Religion and Public Reason

Download or read book Religion and Public Reason written by Maureen Junker-Kenny and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares three approaches to public reason and to the public space accorded to religions: the liberal platform of an overlapping consensus proposed by John Rawls, Jürgen Habermas’s discourse ethical reformulation of Kant’s universalism and its realization in the public sphere, and the co-founding role which Paul Ricoeur attributes to the particular traditions that have shaped their cultures and the convictions of citizens. The premises of their positions are analysed under four aspects: (1) the normative framework which determines the specific function of public reason; (2) their anthropologies and theories of action; (3) the dimensions of social life and its concretization in a democratic political framework; (4) the different views of religion that follow from these factors, including their understanding of the status of metaphysical and religious truth claims, and the role of religion as a practice and conviction in a pluralist society. Recent receptions and critiques in English and German are brought into conversation: philosophers and theologians discuss the scope of public reason, and the task of translation from faith traditions, as well as the role they might have in the diversity of world cultures for shaping a shared cosmopolitan horizon.

Book Violence and Non Violence in Africa

Download or read book Violence and Non Violence in Africa written by Pal Ahluwalia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume seeks both to historicize and to deconstruct the pervasive, almost ritualistic, association of Africa with forms of terrorism as well as extreme violence, the latter bordering on and including genocide. Africa is tendentiously associated with violence in the popular and academic imagination alike. Written by leading authorities in postcolonial studies and African history, as well as highly promising emergent scholars, this book highlights political, social and cultural processes in Africa which incite violence or which facilitate its negotiation or negation through non-violent social practice. The chapters cover diverse historical periods ranging from fourteenth century Ethiopia and early twentieth century Cameroon, to contemporary analyses set in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Ivory Coast and South Africa. It makes a crucial contribution to a revitalized understanding of the social and historical coordinates of violence - or its absence - in African settings. Violence and Non-Violence in Africa will be of interest to students and scholars of African history and anthropology, colonialism and post-colonialism, political science and Africanist cultural studies.
