Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the deeper dimensions of interfaith dialogue--exploring that which divides us personally, spiritually and institutionally. "We believe that interfaith dialogue holds the key to a healing that calls us back to purpose and to meaning. We have risked confronting aspects of our traditions usually hidden, and the consequences have been deeply life-affirming. We risk becoming vulnerable as we share awkward and even unacceptable texts and interpretations, but it is this very vulnerability that allows our dialogue to move forward." --from the Introduction Expanding on the conversation started with their very successful first book, the Interfaith Amigos--a pastor, a rabbi and an imam--probe more deeply into the problem aspects of our religious institutions to provide a profound understanding of the nature of what divides us. They identify four common problem areas in the Abrahamic faiths: Exclusivity Staking Claim to a One and Only Truth Violence Justifying Brutality in the Name of Faith Inequality of Men and Women The Patriarchal Stranglehold on Power Homophobia A Denial of Legitimacy They explore the origins of these issues and the ways critics use these beliefs as divisive weapons. And they present ways we can use these vulnerabilities to open doors for the collaboration required to address our common issues, more profound personal relationships, and true interfaith healing.

Book Sexual Misconduct and the Future of Mega Churches

Download or read book Sexual Misconduct and the Future of Mega Churches written by Glenn L. Starks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have multiple mega-church leaders—Ted Haggard and Bishop Eddie Long, for example—committed acts of sexual misconduct? This book discusses the reasons in depth and examines how these acts are impacting the future of megachurches. Mega-churches—churches with congregations that number in the thousands of worshippers—are growing in popularity in America and around the world. Shockingly, a growing number of megachurch leaders have committed acts of sexual misconduct. While these scandalous crimes have received much attention through the media, literature that examines the topic in detail has been lacking. This book examines the various aspects of sexual misconduct by megachurch leaders, providing a comprehensive review of the topic that discusses the direct and indirect reasons for these crimes. The book provides unbiased, factual coverage of megachurch sexual abuse cases, covering issues surrounding the victims in specific cases, the role of the church, and notable ministers, such as Ted Haggard of New Life Church, Colorado Springs, CO; Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Lithonia, GA; and Joe Barron of Prestonwood Baptist Church, Dallas, TX. The author also discusses how these incidences have impacted societal perceptions of religion, and large churches, and religious organizations, and provides recommendations to curb future cases of sexual abuse within megachurches.

Book So You Don t Want to Go to Church Anymore

Download or read book So You Don t Want to Go to Church Anymore written by Wayne Jacobsen and published by Windblown Media. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jake Colsen, an overworked and disillusioned pastor, happens into a stranger who bears an uncanny resemblance (in manner) to the apostle John. A number of encounters with John as well as a family crisis lead Jake to a new understanding of what his life should be like: one filled with faith bolstered by a steady, close relationship with the God of the universe. Facing his own disappointment with Christianity, Jake must forsake the habits that have made his faith rote and rediscover the love that captured his heart when he first believed. Compelling and intensely personal, So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anything relates a man's rebirth from performance-based Christianity to a loving friendship with Christ that affects all he does, thinks, and says. As John tells Jake, "There is nothing the Father desires for you more than that you fall squarely in the lap of his love and never move from that place for the rest of your life."

Book Lies We Believe About God

Download or read book Lies We Believe About God written by Wm. Paul Young and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the bestselling novel The Shack and the New York Times bestsellers Cross Roads and Eve comes a compelling, conversational exploration of twenty-eight assumptions about God—assumptions that just might be keeping us from experiencing His unconditional, all-encompassing love. In his wildly popular novels, Wm. Paul Young portrayed the Triune God in ways that challenged our thinking—sometimes upending long-held beliefs, but always centered in the eternal, all-encompassing nature of God’s love. Now, in Wm. Paul Young’s first nonfiction book, he invites us to revisit our assumptions about God—this time using the Bible, theological discussion, and personal anecdotes. Paul encourages us to think through beliefs we’ve presumed to be true and consider whether some might actually be false. Expounding on the compassion fans felt from the “Papa” portrayed in The Shack—now a major film starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer—Paul encourages you to think anew about important issues including sin, religion, hell, politics, identity, creation, human rights, and helping us discover God’s deep and abiding love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative book shows how the justices of the United States Supreme Court have used constitutional history, portraying the Framers' actions in a light favoring their own views about how church and state should be separated. Drakeman examines church-state constitutional controversies from the Founding Era to the present, arguing that the Framers originally intended the establishment clause only as a prohibition against a single national church.

Book Beyond Man

  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2021-04-26
  • ISBN : 1478021330
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Beyond Man written by Yountae An and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Man reimagines the meaning and potential of a philosophy of religion that better attends to the inextricable links among religion, racism, and colonialism. An Yountae, Eleanor Craig, and the contributors reckon with the colonial and racial implications of the field's history by staging a conversation with Black, Indigenous, and decolonial studies. In their introduction, An and Craig point out that European-descended Christianity has historically defined itself by its relation to the other while paradoxically claiming to represent and speak to humanity in its totality. The topics include secularism, the Eucharist's relation to Blackness, and sixteenth-century Brazilian cannibalism rituals as well as an analysis of how Mircea Eliade's conception of the sacred underwrites settler colonial projects and imaginaries. Throughout, the contributors also highlight the theorizing of Afro-Caribbean thinkers such as Sylvia Wynter, C. L. R. James, Frantz Fanon, and Aimé Césaire whose work disrupts the normative Western categories of religion and philosophy. Contributors. An Yountae, Ellen Armour, J. Kameron Carter, Eleanor Craig, Amy Hollywood, Vincent Lloyd, Filipe Maia, Mayra Rivera, Devin Singh, Joseph R. Winters

Book The Jesus Cult

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary C. Price
  • Publisher : Remnant Publishing House
  • Release : 2001-10-01
  • ISBN : 0971479704
  • Pages : 412 pages

Download or read book The Jesus Cult written by Gary C. Price and published by Remnant Publishing House. This book was released on 2001-10-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jesus Cult is not a book for everyone. It is written for those both inside and outside the Christian camp who diligently seek the truth and liberation that comes from the True and Living God. This book takes the reader into the spiritual depths of the Holy Scriptures to expose the true spirit behind the deception propagated by religious leaders in the church throughout the ages. The reader of this book will get an understanding of the deception of the devil since before the time of Adam and Eve and how this spirit of deception has infiltrated the church. It is not a text for the weak or feeble; only the sharp and discerning will be able to 'hang on' as Pastor Gary C. Price unveils the internal make-up of Christendom around the globe. Sadly, it is glaringly apparent that multitudes of well-meaning Christians and spiritual zealots are bowing down to religious teaching and traditions that keep them soulish and bound to this present world. By exposing this deception, my prayer is that every reader will repent and turn away from this destructive system and onto a Spirit-led journey to establish a true and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Throughout the pages of this book you will see your life depicted in one way or another. The Jesus Cult not only reveals the spirit of deception, but also provides Biblical answers for the way of escape. The only way is through Jesus Christ. People, it's time to come out of every facet of the world. For too long, we have trusted in all of these worldly systems, from religion and government, to industry and commerce, to no avail. We must begin, today, to rid ourselves of the soulish anchors that bind us to the religious spirit of the Antichrist. Pastor Price's revelation of The Jesus Cult is bold, courageous and uncompromising. His labor 'in the Word and prayer' before the Throne of God has forged in him a prophetic voice to send a clarion call to God's remnant-wherever they reside throughout all the earth. Have no doubt about it; this book is inspired by the Holy Ghost! Through practical, real-life and everyday experiences the Spirit of God began to open the eyes of this shepherd. As Pastor Price met people on the streets of Atlanta, and dialogued with those who sit on church pews every Sunday, the devil's master scheme of deception was clearly exposed. Once he saw the true light, he has never wavered from preaching an end-time message of truth and power. As men and women have encountered the original Gospel of Jesus Christ, they have come out of these religious settings burdened down with demonic weights that plague their souls. They emerge still bound, hurt, and in need of intense deliverance. I have seen the effects of the Jesus Cult on too many of God's people to question its validity and reality in our culture. I am thankful for the impact that this book will have on your life as well. Jesus comes to set the captive free!

Book The Anarchy of Black Religion

Download or read book The Anarchy of Black Religion written by J. Kameron Carter and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Anarchy of Black Religion, J. Kameron Carter examines the deeper philosophical, theological, and religious history that animates our times to advance a new approach to understanding religion. Drawing on the black radical tradition and black feminism, Carter explores the modern invention of religion as central to settler colonial racial technologies wherein antiblackness is a founding and guiding religious principle of the modern world. He therefore sets black religion apart from modern religion, even as it tries to include and enclose it. Carter calls this approach the black study of religion. Black religion emerges not as doctrinal, confessional, or denominational but as a set of poetic and artistic strategies for improvisatory living and gathering. Potentiating non-exclusionary belonging, black religion is anarchic, mystical, and experimental: it reveals alternative relationalities and visions of matter that can counter capitalism’s extractive, individualistic, and imperialist ideology. By enacting a black study of religion, Carter elucidates the violence of religion as the violence of modern life while also opening an alternate praxis of the sacred.

  • Author : Christopher Craig Brittain
  • Publisher : A&C Black

Download or read book Religion at Ground Zero written by Christopher Craig Brittain and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-07-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The world will never be the same!' How many times have human beings uttered this cry after a tragic event? This book analyzes how such emotive reactions impact on the way religion is understood, exploring theological responses to human tragedy and cultural shock by focusing on reactions to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and 7/7, the two World Wars and the Holocaust, the 2004 South-East Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. It discusses themes such as the theodicy question, the function of religious discourse in the face of tragedy, and the relationship between religion and politics. The book explores the tension between religion's capacity to both cause and enhance the suffering and destruction surrounding historical tragedies, but also its potential to serve as a powerful resource for responding to such disasters. Analyzing this dialectic, it engages with the work of Slavoj Žižek, Karl Barth, Theodor Adorno, Emil Fackenheim and Rowan Williams, examining the role of belief, difficulties of overcoming the influence of ideology, and the significance of trust and humility.
