In many respects, the global effort to “flatten the curve” produced a flattening of experience around the world and a striking coincidence of similar experiences in countries the world over. The identity, simultaneity and uniformity of experience were also manifest in common concerns at the intersection of law and religion in many nations around the world, including Africa. The lockdowns and closure of religious worship centres – churches, mosques and religious organisations of all sorts – raised questions of freedom of religion and the related concern for freedom of assembly, along with concerns about the relation of religion to science and public health, religious channels of communication and religious provision of social services. After all, health, communications and social services are all areas in which African religious organisations play key roles. Potential tensions around these issues raised further considerations about the nature of religion-state relations, the status of religious authority and whether religious and state actors would work together or at odds in addressing the Covid‑19 pandemic.

So many Western scholars and some ignorant Africans opined that traditional medicine is fetishism and that Africans do not have proper understanding of the concept of health and wholeness. This misconception, abuse and derogatory attitudes even from some notable Africans towards alternative medicine, as well as the all need of integrating both the alternative and orthodox medicine to bring about total wholeness, serves as the research problem. This study seeks to correct these misconceptions and also to bring to limelight Africans’ proper view on health and wholeness. Its study argued that the bio-psycho-socio-ecological model of health and wholeness is fundamental to the African Traditional Religion and Medicine. This model brings together the different aspects of human life and treats the human person as an integral and harmonious whole in perpetual relationship with the sacred, the human community and the environment.

Book excerpt: This policy analysis addresses guardian's refusal of consent to a child having a blood transfusion. Blood transfusion remains a critical issue in paediatric healthcare in Sub-Saharan Africa due to anaemia caused by malaria, malnutrition and hereditary anomalies of red blood cells. Denying the requisite consent has potential or actual harmful effects on children's right to health and can be fatal. The paper focuses on the religious subjugation of children's rights, particularly among Jehovah's Witnesses, a Christian religious group comprising a significant population in Africa. Despite having ratified the African Children's Charter and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Zambia and Nigeria, the case studies in this research, have not implemented sufficient measures and strategies to effectively protect children's right to health. This research argues that the legislation in both states does not efficiently conform with international law on the protection of children's right to health. It recommends among others, increasing health sector funding, enhancing legislation and policies, and building nationwide awareness. The article further highlights the roles of member states, the African Union, Jehovah's Witness leaders, healthcare providers and children in advocating for medical alternatives, navigating complex situations and educating themselves about rights. The paper calls for a multidisciplinary approach to address the transnational challenge posed by the clash between children's right to health and guardians' freedom of religion in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book excerpt: The book examines the experiences and struggles of East African Healthcare Professionals in their pursuit for labour market integration in the United Kingdom under the Tiered Points Based System – a labour migration programme. Probing the managed migration policy, migration governance and migrant rights, it provides useful context information on the East African sending states, the United Kingdom and the migration of essential healthcare sector workforce. It critiques the fallacy of relying on strict categories when examining labour migration where migrants performing various roles are classed as highly or low skilled. The interdisciplinary study probes the migration-development nexus and the role of law in shaping migrants’ rights experiences. The study is guided by critical theories on law and race. The key findings include tracing the historical evolution of the Points Based System in a racialised context with civic stratification and differentiation practices aimed at non-European migrants. Relying on the socio-legal concept of legal consciousness, the book analyses East African migrant workers’ lived experiences with different facets of law under Britain’s managed migration policy and their responses thereto. It expounds on migrant workers’ strategies of claiming rights and struggles against differentiation practices such as rights restrictions, racialization and manoeuvring precarious legal status. Depending on the available political and legal opportunities including mobilizing and strategic litigation in collaboration with civil society, migrants’ rights-claiming involves invoking international human rights norms as part of migrants’ circulating transnational legal consciousness. The book concludes with a discussion on migrants’ rights claims and organization of lives within the constraints of exclusionary and a times hostile migration policy and legislation.
