Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

Book Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction

Download or read book Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction written by Barry Stimmel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction will help people in pain understand why their pain is not always adequately relieved, as well as help reverse the failure of current medical practice to routinely alleviate pain. As noted by a 1992 publication of the United States Department of Health Services, this devastating trend contributes to unnecessary discomfort, longer recovery periods, and compromised patient outcomes. By reading this book, frustrated physicians and, perhaps more importantly, persons in pain can acquire a better understanding of the nature of pain, its connection to the emotions and psychological state of patients, and the impact particular drugs have on the body; this will facilitate relief from pain among a higher percentage of the population. Opioid analgesics comprise many of the chapters in Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction. Author Barry Stimmel, MD, describes the principles to be followed in prescribing opioid analgesics to relieve pain while maintaining one’s daily activities without any limitation in function. The available opioids are described, and the differences between them are reviewed to allow you--as a physician, health care provider, or even a patient--to gain a better insight into the one(s) to use for both acute and chronic pain states. The point that is emphasized is that dependency on an analgesic to relieve pain is no different than dependency on medications to lower blood pressure, prevent heart attacks, treat diabetes, etc. What should be avoided is “addiction,” a condition where function is impaired rather than enhanced. Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction is a guidebook designed to assist physicians and other health professionals in developing a practical approach to pain management and to give patients a fuller understanding of their pain. You’ll gain specific information about: management of acute and chronic pain pain in children pain and cancer pain and AIDS psychological support of persons in pain theories of pain perception the anatomy of pain In Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction, you’ll learn the basic concepts of drug dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal, the pharmacological actions and side effects of drugs used to provide analgesia, and the fundamental steps to be taken in proper pharmacological treatment of pain. The book produces more effective and more informed communication among physicians, other health professionals, and patients so that together they can achieve better pain relief. As Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction illustrates, it is crucial that both patients and physicians understand clearly the terms describing drug use and the behavioral, biochemical, and cellular concepts underlying dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal. Finally, you will acquire a knowledge of all the potential causes of pain and the appropriate steps for intervention. Medical students, new practitioners, and those wishing to reconsider their approaches to pain management will benefit from the book’s coverage of general principles for pain control, the use of drug combinations to provide the most effective relief, methods for treating pain in different populations (such as the elderly and persons with chronic medical conditions), and alternative options for failed treatment. The scope of Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction reaches from nonprescription medications, such as aspirin, to NSAIDS, like ibuprofen, to narcotic analgesics to stimulants such as amphetamines and caffeine. It is the most comprehensive book available on various drugs, their desired effects and side effects, and their use to alleviate pain.

Book Please Do Not Make Us Suffer Any More

Download or read book Please Do Not Make Us Suffer Any More written by Human Rights Watch (Organization) and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2009 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With support from the Open Society Institute International Palliative Care Initiative, Human Rights Watch released a groundbreaking report on the lack of access to pain relief medicines for millions of patients worldwide. The report, "Please Don't Make Us Suffer Anymore": Access to Pain Treatment as a Human Right, finds that countries can significantly improve access to pain medications by addressing the causes of their poor availability, which include the following: *Failure to put in place functioning supply and distribution systems *Absence of government policies to ensure medicine availability *Insufficient instruction for health care workers *Excessively strict drug-control regulations *Fear of legal sanctions among healthcare workers. "Please Don't Make Us Suffer Anymore" notes that international law requires states to make narcotic drugs available for the treatment of pain while preventing abuse, but that the strong international focus on preventing abuse of such drugs has led many countries to neglect that obligation. The full report is available in PDF format. French, Russian, and Spanish versions are available on the HRW website.

Book Relieving Pain in America

  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press

  • ISBN : 030921484X
  • Pages : 383 pages

Download or read book Relieving Pain in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic pain costs the nation up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enlist the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in examining pain as a public health problem. In this report, the IOM offers a blueprint for action in transforming prevention, care, education, and research, with the goal of providing relief for people with pain in America. To reach the vast multitude of people with various types of pain, the nation must adopt a population-level prevention and management strategy. The IOM recommends that HHS develop a comprehensive plan with specific goals, actions, and timeframes. Better data are needed to help shape efforts, especially on the groups of people currently underdiagnosed and undertreated, and the IOM encourages federal and state agencies and private organizations to accelerate the collection of data on pain incidence, prevalence, and treatments. Because pain varies from patient to patient, healthcare providers should increasingly aim at tailoring pain care to each person's experience, and self-management of pain should be promoted. In addition, because there are major gaps in knowledge about pain across health care and society alike, the IOM recommends that federal agencies and other stakeholders redesign education programs to bridge these gaps. Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity. Given the burden of pain in human lives, dollars, and social consequences, relieving pain should be a national priority.

Book Pain Management in Special Circumstances

Download or read book Pain Management in Special Circumstances written by Nabil Shallik and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like management of disease, management of pain is as old as the human race. When patients come to us with their pain, they present us with a wonderful opportunity: the chance to understand them, to understand how their pain is affecting their lives, the challenge of discovering what is causing their pain, and finally the opportunity to prescribe medications and lifestyle changes to help them gain relief from their pain. It is hoped that this book will provide the latest evidence-based updates on pain management in special circumstances and will serve as a ready reference for those embarking on pain management. Its intent is not to be a heavy book that can only be stored on a bookshelf, but a pocket-sized reference that can be carried, be easily navigated, and be available whenever a conceptual gap compromises pain physicians and their ability to treat their patients.

Book The Pain Relief Secret

  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book The Pain Relief Secret written by Andy Y. Vang and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you want to learn how to reduce chronic pain and prevent acute phases by act on your lifestyle and get rid of pain? If yes, then keep reading... Pain is an essential sign of disease and attempts to treat physiological pain should not be done before it is determined that the pain not be a sign of a treatable disease. When that has been ruled out, treatment of the pain can be initiated. Acute pain can be treated successfully and safely by opioids and NSAIDs. The treatments that are in routine use for the common forms of physiological (acute) pain are many, and they differ mainly with regards to their side effects, costs, and the involvement of the person with pain that the individual methods require. In general, the treatment for physiological pain is dominated by medications many of which can be obtained without a prescription, but pain medications that require a prescription are also in everyday use. Some of these medications are also effective for pathological pain, but for some kinds of pathological pain, the effectiveness of common pain medications is less than what it is for physiological pain. As earlier in this, pain often has two different expressions; one being the perception (feeling) of the pain and the other being the adverse (adverse) effect of the pain also often referred to as suffering. Treating the suffering component seems more important for restoring a person's quality of life than treating the feeling of pain because the suffering reduces a person's quality of life more than the feeling of pain. Many medications, such as opioids, act mainly on the suffering aspect of pain, and they may not change the perception of pain much. Unfortunately, the use of opioids must be restricted because of risks of addiction and risk of death from overdose. It is often possible to manage a person's pain, which means reducing the adverse effects of the pain as much as possible and it is possible to restore the person's quality of life to the greatest extent. A patient who is being treated for pain may say "I still have my pain, but it does not bother me anymore." A treatment that gives that response from a patient may be regarded as an effective treatment although the patient still feels pain. Proper management of pain can make life better for many patients. People often are searching for treatments that can completely solve their problems instead of to improve their situation. People often underestimate how side effects can affect their lives, and physicians and often surgeons are not too eager to discuss side effects. This book covers the following topics: ✅ What is the pain and inflammation? ✅ Pain and nervous system ✅ Memory of pain ✅ Stress and pain ✅ Common pain treatments ✅ Hypnosis for pain management. ✅ Pain and acupuncture. ✅ Pain Medication ✅ Breathing Exercise ✅ Understanding your Pain ✅ Strategies for Treating Pain ✅ Relaxation Can Relieve Your Pain ...And much more A severe obstacle to achieving effective pain control is the way pain medications are administered. The possibility to affect pain conditions through a change in daily living has begun to win acceptance. A healthy lifestyle can improve many health problems including pain. Physical exercise, keeping a healthy weight and healthy eating with some supplements particularly Omega 3 and some vitamins can have beneficial effects although it may be difficult to pinpoint the effects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of times, pain treatment has been the motive of research giving birth to multiple groups of pharmacological families and therapies. Pain perception is a construction built over the biological phenomenon of signal transduction surrounded by different factors such as gender, age, and sociocultural status, among others. The concept of pain as the solely biological manifestation of defense is nowadays considered as a narrow-minded view of this topic. In this regard concepts such as newborns feel no pain or older people complain about everything therefore should not be paid attention when referring pain, are being left behind in the understanding that pain alleviation is a human right and everybody feeling pain should be helped for its relief. This book comprises many aspects of pain treatment and the drugs involved in it. From old analgesics with new mechanisms of action for pain alleviation to analgesics potential for diminishing oxidative stress; from pharmacological therapies to electrical ones, going through alternative medicine; and from pain treatment in dentistry to chronic pain therapies, also boarding the treatment of migraine, different experts share their knowledge on the topic.
