Download or read book Heavy Metals Release in Soils written by H. Magdi Selim and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanisms associated with metal complexes and the sequestering metal contaminants in the environment is essential for effective remediation. Heavy Metal Release in Soils describes and quantifies desorption/release kinetics and dissolution reactions in the release of heavy metals from soil. The book focuses on: New techniques - microscopic surface techniques, NMR and electrophoresis, XAFS, SFM, and time-resolved ATR-FTIR Theoretical analysis and kinetic approaches - adsorption/desorption hysteresis, competitive sorption and transport, multi-component models, speciation kinetics, isotherms and soil and metal parameters, and the role of soil properties on transport Applications - arsenic speciation and mobility in contaminated soils, modeling activity of CD, Zn, and Cu in contaminated soils, and in situ chemical immobilization A timely addition to the literature, this book highlights the desorption/release mechanisms for the purpose of resolving remediation dilemmas in contaminated environments. It gives you the added advantage of case studies at both the microscopic and macroscopic scales, and provides both experimental and numerical investigations. With contributions from an international panel of authors, Heavy Metals Release in Soils fills a gap in the current literature concerned with subsurface contaminant fate and transport processes.
Download or read book Contaminant Geochemistry written by Brian Berkowitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining earth science, subsurface hydrology and environmental geochemistry, this book provides a comprehensive background for those interested in the protection and sustainable management of the subsurface environment. The reader is introduced to the chemistry of contaminants, which usually disturb the natural equilibrium in the subsurface as a result of human activity. One focus of the book is on contaminant reactions in soil solutions. Discussions on case studies are provided.
Download or read book Kinetics of Soil Chemical Processes written by Donald L. Sparks and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of reactions in soil and aquatic environments is a topic of extreme importance and interest. To properly understand the fate of applied fertilizers, pesticides, and organic pollutants with time, and to thus improve nutrient availability and the quality of our groundwater, one must study kinetics. This is the first compre - Demonstrates different kinetic methodologies - Shows how reactions on soil and soil constituents can be measured by utilizing different techniques - Describes rates and mechanisms of interactions with pesticides and organic pollutants with soil - Covers the kinetics of chemical weathering - Discusses how to use mathematical modeling and computer simulation to model kinetic reactions

Download or read book Soil Subsurface Change written by Bruno Yaron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines soil science, earth science, and environmental geochemistry, providing comprehensive background information for specialists interested in chemical-induced changes in the soil-subsurface system. Readers are introduced to the chemistry of contaminants that often disturb the natural soil-subsurface equilibrium as a result of human activity. While the soil-subsurface system has in many cases been affected by human impact, the effects of chemical contaminants on the actual matrix and properties have been largely neglected. The major focus of the book is on changes to the soil-subsurface matrix and properties caused by chemical pollution. By integrating results available in the literature, we observe that chemical pollutants may lead to the irreversible formation of a new soil-subsurface regime characterized by a matrix and properties different than those of the natural regime. In contrast to the geological time scales dictating natural changes to the matrix and properties of the soil-subsurface system, the time scale associated with chemical pollutant-induced changes is far shorter and extends over a “human lifetime scale.” The numerous examples presented in the book confirm that chemical contamination should be considered as an additional factor in the formation of a contemporary soil-subsurface regime that is different than that of the pristine system.

Download or read book Reactivity and Transport of Heavy Metals in Soils written by H. Magdi Selim and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fate of heavy metal particles in the environment is important because they tend to be reactive, mobile, and highly toxic. Reactivity and Transport of Heavy Metals in Soils examines the sometimes complex interactions that occur between metals and the soil they occupy. It discusses basic kinetic concepts and covers the predictability and consequences of metal-soil interactions. This practical guide presents and explains heavy metal issues crucial to hazardous waste site cleanup, including:
