Book Environment and Crime among Residents in Urban Areas

Download or read book Environment and Crime among Residents in Urban Areas written by Olof Dahlbäck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book by Olof Dahlbäck analyzes the direct effects of the environment and the indirect effects of geographical differentiation of individuals on the offender rates of different urban areas. In order to do this, relationships between crime and independent factors are analyzed in various ways - by considering cross-sectional and longitudinal aspects, linear and non-linear models, point and change data, different time periods, micro- and macro-level interaction, and data for individuals with different patterns of moves. The offender rates analyzed refer to individuals suspected by the police. The directly crime-influencing processes focused upon imply that individuals are affected by social control and social resources. The study makes use of advanced analytical models, novel methods and comprehensive data, and it solves several problems that have hampered research.

Book The Relationship Between Trust and Social Capital of China s Urban Residents

Download or read book The Relationship Between Trust and Social Capital of China s Urban Residents written by Zou Yuchun and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the relationship between trust and social capital in contemporary Chinese society. It attempts to clarify the differences in degree among various types of trust in China today and the logic of social actions, hoping to provide a new perspective from which China's local social relationship networks can be understood. The book contributes to the field of contemporary Chinese sociology in the numerous ways. First, it improves the methods for comparing the ways in which different types of trust are measured. Second, it analyzes the regional differences in trust (especially universal trust) across China. Third, it discusses the impact of social capital (social relations and their embedded resources) on trust and tests the relationship for linearity and curvilinearity. Fourth, it explores whether the relationship between social capital and universal trust is regulated by institutional structural resources. The analysis of the regulatory role of structural resources paves the way for a more comprehensive theory of the relationship between social capital and trust. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, contemporary China, and East Asian studies. It will also be a valuable source of reference for policymakers on the improvement of social institutions.

Book Human Mobility Spatiotemporal Context and Environmental Health Recent Advances in Approaches and Methods

Download or read book Human Mobility Spatiotemporal Context and Environmental Health Recent Advances in Approaches and Methods written by Mei-Po Kwan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental health researchers have long used concepts like the neighborhood effect to assessing people’s exposure to environmental influences and the associated health impact. However, these are static notions that ignore people’s daily mobility at various spatial and temporal scales (e.g., daily travel, migratory movements, and movements over the life course) and the influence of neighborhood contexts outside their residential neighborhoods. Recent studies have started to incorporate human mobility, non-residential neighborhoods, and the temporality of exposures through collecting and using data from GPS, accelerometers, mobile phones, various types of sensors, and social media. Innovative approaches and methods have been developed. This Special Issue aims to showcase studies that use new approaches, methods, and data to examine the role of human mobility and non-residential contexts on human health behaviors and outcomes. It includes 21 articles that cover a wide range of topics, including individual exposure to air pollution, exposure and access to green spaces, spatial access to healthcare services, environmental influences on physical activity, food environmental and diet behavior, exposure to noise and its impact on mental health, and broader methodological issues such as the uncertain geographic context problem (UGCoP) and the neighborhood effect averaging problem (NEAP). This collection will be a valuable reference for scholars and students interested in recent advances in the concepts and methods in environmental health and health geography.
