Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure that includes physical activity and family functioning among families that have at least one child (17 years old or younger) at home. The sample consisted of 519 families. Data were analyzed from a parental perspective. Family leisure that includes physical activity was determined by using an adapted version of the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP). Family functioning was determined using FACES II. Univariate analyses indicated significant positive correlations between the amount of the intensity present during physical activity participation and family functioning, cohesion, and adaptability. Multivariable analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between family leisure involvement and family functioning. Both core and balance family leisure patterns were predictors of family functioning; however, core family leisure patterns were the strongest family leisure predictor of family functioning. Intensity of physical activity during family leisure, as indicated by the results of the multivariable analyses, was not significant in explaining the variance of the dependent variable: family functioning. For the sample of this study, home-based recreational activities were preferred over all other types of family recreation even if families were living by public parks or recreational centers. Implications for recreational practitioners, other interesting findings, and recommendations for further research are discussed.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the complications and implications of parental involvement as a policy, through an exploratory theoretical approach, including historical and sociological accounts and personal reflection. This approach represents the author's effort to understand the origins, meanings, and effects of parental involvement as a prerequisite of schooling and particularly as a policy 'solution' for low achievement and even inequity in the American educational system. Most of the policy and research discourse on school-family relations exalts the partnership ideal, taking for granted its desirability and viability, the perspective of parents on specific involvement in instruction, and the conditions of diverse families in fulfilling their appointed role in the partnership. De Carvalho takes a distinct stance. She argues that the partnership-parental ideal neglects several major factors: It proclaims parental involvement as a means to enhance (and perhaps equalize) school outcomes, but disregards how family material and cultural conditions, and feelings about schooling, differ according to social class; thus, the partnership-parental involvement ideal is more likely to be a projection of the model of upper-middle class, suburban community schooling than an open invitation for diverse families to recreate schooling. Although it appeals to the image of the traditional community school, the pressure for more family educational accountability really overlooks history as well as present social conditions. Finally, family-school relations are relations of power, but most families are powerless. De Carvalho makes the case that two linked effects of this policy are the gravest: the imposition of a particular parenting style and intrusion into family life, and the escalation of educational inequality. Rethinking Family-School Relations: A Critique of Parental Involvement in Schooling--a carefully researched and persuasively argued work--is essential reading for all school professionals, parents, and individuals concerned with public schooling and educational equality.

Book excerpt: Previous research on couple and family leisure suggests that leisure activities have potential to impact adolescent well-being (e.g., Berntsson & Ringsberg, 2008). However, most research has been done in Western contexts (Hodge et al., 2015). This paper utilizes time-use diary data and participant reports of adolescent well-being (physical health, mental health, and academic achievement) collected within the South India Community Health Study conducted in rural Tamil Nadu, India. Participants came from 1,355 households and included fathers, their wives, and their adolescent children (between the ages of 12 and 17). Using their responses, this paper uses correlation and regression analyses to investigate potential relationships between time spent in couple and family leisure activities (both active and passive) and adolescent well-being to examine whether leisure in India follows patterns similar to or different from those within Western nations. Furthermore, this examination attempts to identify whether these effects vary by marriage type (arranged by parents or relatives versus choice-based) or sex of the adolescent. Results suggest a negative association between passive couple leisure time and adolescent sickness within the previous twelve months, anxiety, and depression, but no significant relationship was found for academic achievement. Furthermore, active couple leisure time and family leisure time (active or passive) showed no significant effects for adolescent well-being. Marriage type showed no significant moderating effects, and adolescent sex only significantly moderated the relationship between passive couple leisure time and adolescent academic achievement, such that correlations were stronger for females than males. Possible implications and limitations to the previous findings are also discussed.

Book excerpt: This research investigates the relationship between at-home activities and level of school performance of students from a small, rural school district in the Mid-Westem United States. A multiple-item questionnaire was given to parents/guardians of fourth grade students (n = 69). Parents/guardians were asked 1) to report demographic information (sex and age) about their child, 2) to describe how much time on average their child spent, per day, engaged in ten different at-home activities (homework, school related computer use, non school related computer use, videogame use, reading, outdoor play with others, outdoor play alone, television viewing, and inside creative play, and inside fantasy play), and 3) to report the average grades their child received on third grade trimester report cards. Forty-nine completed questionnaires were returned to the researcher, 41 of which were analyzed. This study found that children who spent more time engaged in outdoor play alone, homework, and reading performed significantly better academically than students who engaged in other at-home activities. Sedentary versus active play activities were discussed. This research also included a discussion about electronic activities. Major conclusions are reported along with the limitations of this study. Recommendations for further research are also discussed.
