In 1972, the players became the first in professional sports to go on strike. Four years later, contractual changes allowed those with six years in the majors to become free agents, leading to an unprecedented increase in salaries. Developments in the play of the game included new ballparks with faster fields and artificial turf, and the introduction of the designated hitter in 1973. Eminent personalities emerged from the dugout, including many African Americans and Latinos. Focusing on the stars who debuted from 1970 through 1979, this book covers the highs and lows of more than 1,300 players who gave fans the most exciting decade baseball has ever seen.

Book Relationship of First Pitch Strikes to on Base Average in Baseball

Download or read book Relationship of First Pitch Strikes to on Base Average in Baseball written by Hal Thomas De Berry and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a relationship between first pitch strikes and on base average in community college baseball. The study sought to collect data under game conditions in order to determine if a pitcher gained any appreciable advantage over a hitter by throwing the first pitch in the count for a strike. Data was gathered through the experimental method of applied research. Eighteen Community Colleges of Spokane pitchers, and fifty-five pitchers playing for teams that opposed Community Colleges of Spokane, ranging in age from 18-22 years old were monitored. Each time during the 1989-90 seasons (84 games) a Spokane pitcher faced a hitter during a scheduled game, the first pitch was recorded, as was the result of the batter's appearance. For the opposing teams, data was collected in the same manner over the 1990 season (41 games). Data were compiled and tabulated in an effort to calculate on base averages after the first pitch was thrown to a hitter. Additionally, statistical analyses were performed for first pitch batting averages, first pitch bases on balls and percentage of strikes thrown on the first pitch. Comparisons were made between Spokane and its opponents, and the data were combined and analyzed together, using correlational and descriptive statistical techniques"--Document.
