Book excerpt: Despite common perceptions that there is a direct cause and effect relationship between changes in the international exchange value of the dollar and the price of oil, an analysis of recent data indicates that changes in the price of oil are driven by changes in the demand for oil that is different from the supply of oil, rather than changes in the value of the dollar. [...] While the data do not support a strong cause and effect relationship between the value of the dollar and the price of oil, there likely are various channels through which changes in the price of oil and in the value of the dollar may be indirectly correlated. [...] The data also indicate that an increase in the demand for crude oil that exceeded the increase in the supply of oil and a laggardly pace in oil production capacity likely are among the main factors behind the sharp run up in the price of oil that occurred over the first seven months of 2008. [...] In addition, changes in the international exchange value of the dollar likely reflect a number of factors, including changes in the demand for and supply of capital within the U. S. economy, the relative rate of return on interest-sensitive assets, and expectations about the performance of the U. S. economy. [...] The interaction between the price of oil and the value of the dollar is complicated further by the way changes in the price of oil can affect the economic performance of other nations and, therefore, have an impact on their respective currencies.9 According to Global Insight,10 a number of factors worked to put upward pressure on oil prices in 2007 and during the first half of 2008.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid changes in the price of oil and the impact of such price changes on economies around the globe has attracted considerable attention. In mid-2008 as the price of oil rose to unprecedented heights and then dropped sharply, the international exchange value of the dollar fell and then rose relative to a broad basket of currencies. For some, these two events seem to indicate a cause and effect relationship between changes in the price of oil and changes in the value of the dollar. Despite common perceptions that there is a direct cause and effect relationship between changes in the international exchange value of the dollar and the price of oil, an analysis of recent data indicate that the rise in the price of oil is being driven by an increase in demand that is exceeding the increase in supply. Book The Trade Deficit the Dollar and the U S National Interest

Download or read book The Trade Deficit the Dollar and the U S National Interest written by Ernest H. Preeg and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr. Preeg answers these questions with a clear presentation of the relationship between U.S. trade and financial interests. He argues that the chronic trade deficit and the related buildup of foreign debt can have substantial adverse consequences for the United States, and that early actions are needed to increase the U.S. savings rate and to curtail mercantilist exchange rate polices by some trading partners. Many observers believe we do not need to worry about the trade deficit in this era of high growth and full employment. The Trade Deficit, the Dollar, and the U.S. National Interest is essential reading for anyone interested in a more concerned assessment of the prospects for America's economic future and geopolitical position."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The real effective exchange rate of the dollar is close to its minimum level for the past 4decades (as of September 2008). At the same time, however, the U.S. trade and currentaccount deficits remain large and, absent a significant correction in coming years, wouldcontribute to a further accumulation of U.S. external liabilities. The paper discusses thetension between these two aspects of the dollar assessment, and what factors can helpreconcile them. It focuses in particular on the terms of trade, adjustment lags, andmeasurement issues related to both the real effective exchange rate and the current accountbalance.

Book The International Role of the Dollar and Trade Balance Adjustment

Download or read book The International Role of the Dollar and Trade Balance Adjustment written by Linda S. Goldberg and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pattern of international trade adjustment is affected by the continuing international role of the dollar and related evidence on exchange rate pass-through into prices. This paper argues that a depreciation of the dollar would have asymmetric effects on flows between the United States and its trading partners. With low exchange rate pass-through to U.S. import prices and high exchange rate pass-through to the local prices of countries consuming U.S. exports, the effect of dollar depreciation on real trade flows is dominated by an adjustment in U.S. export quantities, which increase as U.S. goods become cheaper in the rest of the world. Real U.S. imports are affected less because U.S. prices are more insulated from exchange rate movements -- pass-through is low and dollar invoicing is high. In relation to prices, the effects on the U.S. terms of trade are limited: U.S. exporters earn the same amount of dollars for each unit shipped abroad, and U.S. consumers do not encounter more expensive imports. Movements in dollar exchange rates also affect the international trade transactions of countries invoicing some of their trade in dollars, even when these countries are not transacting directly with the United States.

Download or read book The Dollar s Decline written by Roberto Miguel Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Dollar's Decline" delves into the intricate relationship between the U.S. dollar, global oil transactions, and the broader health of the American economy. For decades, the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency, especially in oil trade, has been a cornerstone of its global economic influence. This comprehensive exploration examines the ramifications of a shift away from the dollar in oil transactions and what it portends for the future of U.S. economic dominance. Key aspects of the book include: Historical Context: An overview of the establishment of the U.S. dollar as the de facto currency for global oil transactions and the resulting 'petrodollar' system. Economic Pillars: Unpacking the benefits accrued by the U.S. due to the dollar's dominant position in oil trade, from lower borrowing costs to heightened geopolitical leverage. Emerging Trends: Analyzing the motivations and mechanisms through which countries are exploring alternatives to the dollar for oil trade, from bilateral agreements to the rise of other reserve currencies. Impacts on the U.S. Economy: Investigating the potential economic consequences of a diminished role for the dollar, including effects on interest rates, trade balances, and foreign investment. Global Ripple Effects: Exploring how changes in oil transaction dynamics could reverberate through global financial systems, trade alliances, and geopolitical strategies. Future Forecasting: Speculation on the potential future of the U.S. dollar, considering technological innovations, emerging economic powers, and shifts in global economic governance. Adaptive Strategies: Proposing potential policy adjustments, economic reforms, and strategic alliances the U.S. could pursue to mitigate risks and capitalize on new opportunities. "The Dollar's Decline" serves as a timely primer for understanding the evolving landscape of global economic power dynamics. Through rigorous analysis, expert insights, and a forward-looking perspective, the book provides readers with a nuanced understanding of the potential challenges and transformations on the horizon for the U.S. economy in a rapidly changing global financial ecosystem.

Book Making Of An Economic Superpower The Unlocking China s Secret Of Rapid Industrialization

Download or read book Making Of An Economic Superpower The Unlocking China s Secret Of Rapid Industrialization written by Yi Wen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China is no doubt one of the most important events in world economic history since the Industrial Revolution. Mainstream economics, especially the institutional theory of economic development based on a dichotomy of extractive vs. inclusive political institutions, is highly inadequate in explaining China's rise. This book argues that only a radical reinterpretation of the history of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the West (as incorrectly portrayed by the institutional theory) can fully explain China's growth miracle and why the determined rise of China is unstoppable despite its current 'backward' financial system and political institutions. Conversely, China's spectacular and rapid transformation from an impoverished agrarian society to a formidable industrial superpower sheds considerable light on the fundamental shortcomings of the institutional theory and mainstream 'blackboard' economic models, and provides more-accurate reevaluations of historical episodes such as Africa's enduring poverty trap despite radical political and economic reforms, Latin America's lost decades and frequent debt crises, 19th century Europe's great escape from the Malthusian trap, and the Industrial Revolution itself.

Book Is the U S Trade Deficit Sustainable

Download or read book Is the U S Trade Deficit Sustainable written by Catherine L. Mann and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis of 1997-98 and the widening US trade deficit have precipitated fresh inquiry into a set of perennial questions about global integration and the US economy. How has global integration affected US producers and workers, and overall growth and inflation? Is a chronic and widening deficit sustainable, or will the dollar crash, perhaps taking the economy with it? If the problem was one of "twin deficits," as many thought, why has the trade deficit continued to grow even as the budget deficit narrowed to zero? If US companies are so competitive, why does the trade deficit persist? Is the trade deficit a result of protectionism abroad? Will it lead to protectionism at home? What role do international capital markets have? Each chapter presents relevant data and a simple analytical framework as the basis for concise discussions of these major issues. The final section of the book provides an outlook for the deficit and suggests alternative policy courses for dealing with it. This book is designed for policymakers and others who are interested in the US role in the world economy. It is also suitable for courses in international economics, business, and international affairs.
