Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: High levels of self-esteem (the individual's assessment of self-worth) have been associated with a variety of positive child outcomes, while low levels of self-esteem have been related to problems in child growth and development. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between specific child temperament and parenting behaviors to the child's selfesteem. More specifically it determined the relationship between child quality of mood, child adaptability, maternal responsiveness, maternal reasoning guidance, child gender, and family socioeconomic status with the child's perceived competence and social acceptance. The interactive effects of child quality of mood x maternal responsiveness and child adaptability x maternal reasoning guidance were also explored. The sample for this study consisted of 45 preschool children and their mothers. The children were enrolled in the O.S.U. Child Development Center and the L.B.C.C. Family Resource Center. Mothers completed a questionnaire consisting of an adaptation of the Parent Temperament Questionnaire for Children (Thomas, Chess, & Korn, 1977), an adaptation of the Iowa Parent Behavior Inventory (Crase, Clark, & Pease, 1979), and descriptive information. Children were assessed for self-esteem using Harter and Pike's Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children (1984). The analyses consisted of the following: descriptive statistics of all variables, a correlation matrix using all variables, univariate and hierarchical regressions between the independent variables and perceived competence and social acceptance, and regression analyses to test for interactive effects of the selected independent variables against perceived competence and social acceptance. Results revealed these significant findings: maternal responsiveness positively correlated with social acceptance; child adaptability negatively correlated with social acceptance; positive interaction effects were demonstrated between child quality of mood x maternal responsiveness and child adaptability against social acceptance; negative interaction effects were revealed between child adaptability x maternal reasoning guidance against social acceptance; also, child adaptability x maternal reasoning guidance with maternal responsiveness significantly predicted greater social acceptance. No significant relationships were found with perceived competence. This study supported the expectation that specific child temperament characteristics interacted with particular parenting behaviors to affect the development of positive child self-esteem.

Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Book excerpt: The present research study is an exploratory study that hypothesizes a relationship between maternal perception of acceptance by each of the subject's own parents. As a secondary thesis, the study hypothesizes a relationship between maternal perception of adequacy with an adolescent and perception of self-esteem as a mother of the adolescent. As a result of the exploratory nature of this research, other relationships between variables were sought that had not been formally hypothesized. After two pilot studies, which initially consisted of in-depth interviews with parents and which secondarily consisted of a self-administered questionnaire, The Mother's Perception Survey was developed. This instrument, along with The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale was self-administered by 85 subjects, who were patients at six of the fifteen community clinics of the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services. The research findings were as follows: A positive relationship between perceived adequacy and acceptance was only found to exist in a relatively weak form, between the subject's perception of adequacy with her first or oldest adolescent and her perceived acceptance by her mother. No significant relationships were found to exist between perceived adequacy with any of the subject's adolescents and perceived acceptance by her father. Moreover, no significant relationships were found to exist between perceived acceptance by either parent and perceived adequacy with the second or third adolescent.;A strong positive relationship was found to exist between perceived adequacy with all adolescents and the subject's perception that parenting these adolescents had either led to a gain in self-esteem as a parent or had no effect on her self-esteem as a parent. Furthermore, strong positive relationships were found to exist between maternal adequacy and perceived adequacy of the adolescent and perceived gratification in parenting the youngster.
