Book Relations of the United States With Sweden Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Relations of the United States with Sweden" is author Knute Emil Carlson's doctoral thesis presented to the University of Pennsylvania. This book is a thorough examination of the relationship between the United States and a Scandinavian nation of significantly less global influence. Author Knute Carlson's study is a history of the relationship between Sweden and the United States. While the author's research examined the bond between the two nations up until the period of the First World War, this text presents only the early history of the nations. The work is focused on four major areas, each of which is dedicated a separate chapter. Part one examines the negotiations between the two nations to establish a free trade port in St. Bartholomew as early as 1784. Part two details a proposed alliance of neutral states during the Napoleonic Wars that was instigated by Sweden. The third chapter looks at the Straslund Claims and further land arrangements between the two countries. Finally, part four details the commercial relationship of Sweden and the United States. The text concludes with a detailed bibliography. Knute Emil Carlson's work is a brief but interesting examination of the relationship between a developing world power and a nation that would have seemed quite distant during the eighteenth century. At the time of its original publication little research existed examining the relations between Sweden and the United States, and thus this work served to fill a gap in the literature. Modern students of history will certainly find Carlson's research to be a compelling read. "Relations of the United States with Sweden" is a well crafted dissertation. Carlson was clearly a keen student of history, and this book benefits greatly from his enthusiasm and passion for the subject. For students and scholars of U.S. history, particularly as it relates to the nation's relationship with other countries, the author's work remains a valuable read. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diplomatic Relations of the United States With Sweden and Norway, Vol. 7 At the time of the American Declaration of Independence Norway was governed as a province of Denmark, and remained under Danish domination until May 17, 1814, when she declared herself an independent kingdom to be governed by a constitu tional monarchy.1 By the treaty of Kiel, January 14, 1814, the allied powers had virtually granted Norway to Sweden in return for assistance against Napoleon,2 and as time wore on, it became increasingly evident that they would not recognize the complete independence of Norway. The Norwegian patriots were there fore glad to accept the ofier of Charles John Bernadette, Crown Prince of Sweden, to recognize the constitution of Norway on the condition that that kingdom should submit to a loose union with Sweden. By the act of November 4, 1814, the union was acknowl edged by the Norwegian Storthing.3 According to a Speech of the King to the Swedish Rigsdag, perfect equality was to obtain between the two kingdoms, but this perfect equality, was, nevertheless, not established in practice, as diplomacy and for eign affairs, as well as the representation of both kingdoms at for eign courts, remained in the hands of the Swedish Government. But this was a practice based on no express right, as no such privilege was granted Sweden by the Act of Union. 4 Our relations with Norway were, therefore, prior to 1814 bound up with our relations with Denmark, and between 1814 and 1905 they were conducted with Sweden and Norway as a unit. Book excerpt: Since 1814 Sweden has avoided involvement in armed conflicts and carried out policies of non-alignment in peacetime and neutrality during war. Even though the Swedish government often describes Sweden as a ‘nation of peace’, in 2004 the 200-year anniversary of that peace passed by with barely any attention. Despite its extraordinary longevity, research about the Swedish experience of enduring peace is underdeveloped. 200 Years of Peace places this long period of peace in broader academic and public discussions surrounding claimed Swedish exceptionality as it is represented in the nation’s social policies, expansive welfare state, eugenics, gender equality programs, and peace.
