Book excerpt: FOREWORD One of the questions raised by the Sunnis is the incompatibility of the Shiite concept of Imamah (spiritual leadership) with the ways and methods of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (‘a). It is generally said that what is established from the ways and methods of His Holiness is his interaction and conciliation with the caliphs; his avoidance of conflict with them; his adoption of some of their names for his progeny; benevolence and participation in his consultations and marriage with their families – and these speak of acknowledgement of their caliphate by His Holiness, and legitimacy of their rule. This booklet is an intensive research and analyses about this issue and response to the aforesaid question. This booklet discusses and examines the relationship of His Holiness with the companions of the Prophet (s), the caliphs and their families. Before we examine the subject, it is essential that we make a note of certain issues: 1. Although the Twelver-Imam Shiite is not convinced, unlike some of the Sunni scholars,[1] that all the companions of the Prophet of Islam (s) were just, however they emphasize the following stances: A) Considering that the companions of the Prophet (s) were in close relationship with His Holiness, insulting all of them is not permissible and culminates in faithlessness and departure from Islam. In 632, soon after the Prophet Muhammad died, a struggle broke out among his followers as to who would succeed him. Most Muslims argued that the leader of Islam should be elected by the community's elite and rule as Caliph. They would later become the Sunnis. Otherswho would become known as the Shiabelieved that Muhammad had designated his cousin and son-in-law Ali as his successor, and that henceforth Ali's offspring should lead as Imams. This dispute over who should guide Muslims, the Caliph or the Imam, marks the origin of the Sunni-Shii split in Islam. Toby Matthiesen explores this hugely significant division from its origins to the present day. Moving chronologically, his book sheds light on the many ways that it has shaped the Islamic world, outlining how over the centuries Sunnism and Shiism became Islam's two main branches, and how Muslim Empires embraced specific sectarian identities. Through a comparative analysis of authors between genres and time periods, this book shows how authors were able to convey their personal perspectives on important religio-political tensions that emerged through the revolt against Uthman, namely the tension between Sunnis and Shiis, religious and political authority and appeals to maintain stability and unity vs. appeals for greater justice. This last debate, which in many ways began with the revolt against Uthman, has been repeated most recently in the Arab Spring. In The Rays Collection are “fruits” from all three of his sojourns in the Madrasa-i Yûsufiya, as he called prison, recalling the unjust imprisonment of Joseph (UWP) and that prison is essentially a place of education and training. The Second Ray was the final fruit of Eskişehir Prison (1935-’36), while The Eleventh Ray has as its name Meyve Risalesi, The Fruits of Belief, and was written for his fellow prisoners in Denizli Prison (1943-’44). It consists of eleven Topics, which offer irrefutable proofs of the six main pillars of faith. The last two of the Topics, however, were written in Emirdağ, Badī’uzzaman’s place of compulsory resi dence after Emirdağ.
